• Welcome Guest, to the Spybot Forums! It's 2025, and we just upgraded our forum software.

Today is Safer Internet Day, and with our new forum, you can finally use passkeys to login. That was about time!

Of course, you could ask if a forum is still useful, with so many social media networks out there where you might already have an account, and met a lot of users. You can now use your login from some of those networks to log in here. And by posting here, your question and data is stored on our servers and not automatically shared with a whole social media network.

We'll also start using the forum for small bits of information, announcements and more again.

How can I disable the file scanner?

When I try to install Microsoft programs/updates with a .msi extension or patches with a .msp extension, Spybot insists on scanning them an dthen they won't install. I have to unregister the Spybot dlls or uninstall it to install the software (which means logging in as administrator etc). How can I set a trusted location or just disable this behaviour completely? I don't have Tea Timer turned on.

Thanks

If you have an .msi file or .msp file somewhere on your computer, rightclick it,then select Properties. What does it say beside Opens With?
Also, could you please let me know what operating system you have?

Hello,

To disable the single files scan please open the registry editor by:
(a)
press windowskey + r then enter "regedit" (without quotation marks)
or
(b)
click on "start" , then "run" and enter "regedit" (without quotation marks)

(a+b)
and then browse to the following path.

Please delete the following registry keys:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\sdfiles
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\sdfiles

For more information, please take a look into our forum.

Best regards
