View Full Version : Computer and Internet Slow, Computer Hangs
Recently my computer has been very sluggish. While on the internet this is a intermittent problem. It works fine, then 15 minutes later it is so slow it takes forever to load a page. Sometimes the computer just gets hung up and I get not responding messages. I usually need to turn off my computer and get back on in order to be able to do anything on the internet. Last night I was trying to run Housecall and it took over a couple of hours.
Weekly I run Spybot, Spysweeper, Ad-Aware and Ewido. I also switched from IE to Firefox. I have been doing this since months ago when I had a serious problem after someone downloaded Kazaa onto my computer. I followed instructions from this website and the problem went away. I sometimes also have problems with Microsoft Word.

Close all Browser and Program Windows and have HijackThis fix the following.

Once in safe mode, Click start / then my computer / local disk then follow the process tree.
Or using Windows Explorer, locate the first file right click then select delete.
Delete the following file(s) listed in bold.
(do a search for these. It'll probably be in c:\windows or c:\windows\system32.)

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment
I followed all of the instructions but when I looked in My computer for the files you listed -- backd.exe, etc. - I could not find them. I then ran ATF Cleaner and HIjackthis. I am still having the same problem. The first 5-10 minutes I get online is fine but then everything slows down. I timed it and it took 2 minutes to get from your front page to the forums page. Download Ewido Security Suite (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/) it is a trial version of the program.
Install ewido security suite
Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
On the left hand side of the main screen click update
Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.

Once the updates are installed do the following:
Click on scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
Click Save report.
Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite and post the results here.

Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Download the trial version of Ewido anti-malware 3.5 from here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ Install Ewido anti-malware. When installing, under Additional Options uncheck Install background guard and Install scan via context menu. When you run Ewido for the first time, you could get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click Ok. The program will prompt you to update. Click the Ok button. The program will now go to the main screen.You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files. On the left-hand side of the main screen click the Update Button. Click on Start.The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once finished updating, close Ewido.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
Ewido manual updates (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/). Make sure to close Ewido before installing the update.
Warning: running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.
Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode. If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power. Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on. Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again. Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected. Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode. Login on your usual account.
Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.

The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.
The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Proceed like this: Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options. On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files. In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK. On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK. Click OK.Next Click Start, click Control Panel and then double-click Display. Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see a checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click Ok then Apply and Ok.
Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.
Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start Ewido, and run a full scan. Click on Scanner Click on Settings Under How to scan all boxes should be checked Under Unwanted Software all boxes should be checked Under What to scan select Scan every file Click on Ok Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process. Let the program scan the machine.If Ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a checkmark in the lower left corner of the box that says Perform action on all infections and put a checkmark in the box next to Create encrypted backup, then choose clean and click Ok.
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save Report. Click Save Report button Save the report to your DesktopClose Ewido and Reboot in Normal Mode.
Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter
Answer Yes to the question "Restore Trusted Zone ?" by typing
Y and hit Enter.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if a virus or spyware infection.
There can be backups made in the System Restore folder.
Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus or spyware removal.
To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account
which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because
you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.
3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Rescan with HJT and post a new log here.

When I first rebooted after doing all of the previous instructions, the internet hung and I could not even get to my home page. I have msn.com. This happens a lot with the home page. If I type another address in it goes to that quickly but won't go to the home page.
I got out of IE and then went back in. That time it the speed was back to normal. I stayed on the internet for over 10 minutes which is usually the time it takes to slow up. Maybe the problem is fixed. What can you see from the hijack log?

Close all Browser and Program Windows and have HijackThis fix the following.
Do this by checking the box beside each and then clicking on Fix checked.

Backup your Registry.
click start > run > enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL
Then download RegSeeker http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm.
Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program.
Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK.
When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again.
Then right click within the search results and select delete.
Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing.
Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything).
In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back.
A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.
Rescan with HJT and post a new log here.

I followed the first part of the directions and am now running Regseeker. I have a question. I ran it the first time and it displayed many items. The second time it displayed a couple more. After deleting all of those items, I continued to run it. It has been running now for two hours and other than the first two times, it keeps popping up the same file. I delete it, run it again and it displays what looks like the same file again and again. It has popped up at least 20 or more times. Does this seem right or could it not be deleting this file. The file is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOftware/Digidesign Obsolete entry.
i'll keep running it for a while and then continue tomorrow unless I hear back that something might be wrong.

Log looks clean how is it running now.
When it first starts running, it is much faster than before. But it still has the same problem with slowing down and hanging after about 10-15 minutes being online. I'm beginning to think it may be an issue with IE or Windows XP.
At least, I know I'm totally free of viruses and spyware.
I really appreciate all the help you have given me. It's great to have a place like this to come to for help.
Do you have any suggestions as to where to go for help from this point?

Click \start\run\then type in or paste in
sfc /scannow
You must be logged on as a member of the Administrators group to run sfc.
If sfc discovers that a protected file has been overwritten, it retrieves the correct version of the file from the %systemroot%\system32\dllcache folder, and then replaces the incorrect file.

My problem seems to be solved. I've been on the internet several times since following the instructions of your last post and it seems to be running fine. I haven't had any problems with pages loading or slowing of the speed.
My computer hasn't run this fast for a long time. Thank you so much for your patience and help.
