View Full Version : Infected with virtumonde.sdn?

Hello.

I'm a new user to the forums here. It appears my PC may be infected with the virtumonde virus, and possibly others. My Norton antivirus suddenly required activation and the Symantec system showed i had exceeded the allowed number of installations, which they said was an indication of a virus attack.

Due to some ill-advised surfing by my teenage son this summer, my PC was infected with a virus based on a scam that said something like "your computer is infected with a virus. Click here to fix." My son clicked on it and a virus attack ensued. I can't remember the name of the virus. After that time, my Norton antivirus required manual enabling of the auto-protect feature, and I've had spotty luck in getting Sbybot S&D to run. However, my PC has worked normally until this week.

I ran Spybot several times this week and each time, the application would freeze before it could fix any problems. Tonight, I ran Spybot again and it did complete a scan of my PC before freezing. I noticed that the last file it scanned was virtumonde.sdn. I did some research and discovered this is a known virus.

I have not taken any other action aside from what is described below.

I'm doing my best to follow the instructions in "read this before you post". Please let me know if I got it wrong, or need to take some other action. I'd be very grateful for any help you all can provide.

Here is the log from HJT:

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Hi Maddmax and welcome to Safer Netowrking. :)

I'm Dakeyras and I am going to try to assist you with your problem. Please take note of the below:

I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!.
The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.

I also have log.txt and info.txt files if needed. If you are referring to logs created by RSIT, please delete the following:

RSIT.exe <-- Executable file.
C:\rsit <-- Folder
We will download a fresh copy in due course.
Selective Startup Mode Advice:

Your log shows that MSConfig is running at startup. This indicates that you may be using "diagnostic startup" rather than "normal startup" to stop something from running. While this is normally OK, it is possible that you have disabled something that will affect how we clean your machine. Please don't change anything in MSConfig yet, these instructions will produce a report of what programs are currently disabled so I can see the entries without requiring any changes:

Go to Start > Run and type Notepad
Copy/paste the following quote box into a new notepad (not wordpad) document. Make sure that wordwrap is unchecked.

regedit /a /e %systemdrive%\regkey.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig"
notepad %systemdrive%\regkey.txt
del /q %systemdrive%\regkey.txt
Go to the menu at the top of the Notepad File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "mslook.bat" (you MUST include the quotes)
Locate mslook.bat on your Desktop and double-click it. When notepad opens, copy/paste the content in your reply. When you close Notepad the CMD window will close automatically and the text file will be deleted.

Disable Spybot S&D TeaTimer's Registry Guard:

This is so it does not interfere with the malware removal process, you may re-enable this when I give the all clear.

If you have version 1.5 or 1.6, right click the Spybot Icon in the system tray near the clock (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol).
Click once on Resident Protection, then right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
Go to Start > All Programs > Spybot - Search & Destroy > Spybot Search & Destroy.
Click on Mode > Advanced Mode. When it prompts you, click Yes.
On the left hand side, click on Tools.
Check this box if it is not yet ticked: Resident.
You will notice that Resident is now added under Tools. Click on Resident.
Uncheck this box: Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of over-all system settings) active.
Exit Spybot Search & Destroy.
Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
Note: The above must be completed before proceeding any further!

When completed the above, please post back the following:

How is you computer performing now? Any problems encountered and or any further symptoms?
The results of mslook.bat.

How is you computer performing now? Any problems encountered and or any further symptoms?

My computer has never had severe symptoms. It has continued to work fairly well. The same is true after I restarted. One thing I did notice is that the "auto protect" feature of Norton Antivirus was not activated after the restart. I had to manually select "enable auto protect". This was one of the potential virus symptoms I noticed before, which appeared to be corrected after I contact Symantec for help with the re-registering Norton Antivirus.

Thanks in advance for your help. Please let me know how to proceed.

Hi. :)

Enable disabled items with MSConfig:

Go to Start> Run type msconfig and click OK.

Under the Services tab click Enable All

Under the Startup tab click Enable All> Apply> OK> Reboot now.

StartUpLite:

Please download this small application from here (http://www.malwarebytes.org/startuplite.php).

It is very simple to use and quite effective and will advise about any unnecessary system startups that can be safely removed.

Scan with Rooter:

Please download Rooter (http://forums.whatthetech.com/redirect.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Feric.71.mespages.googlepages.com%2FRooter.exe) to your desktop.

Double click on Rooter.exe to start the application.
Now click on the Scan button.
When the scan is completed a text file called Rooter.txt will appear on your desktop, post the contents in your next reply.
Now click on Close button to exit Rooter.
Note: The logfile can also be located within this folder Rooter$ at the root of your installed Hard-Drive. EG: C:\Rooter$

Scan with RSIT:

Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here (http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe) and save it to your desktop.
Make sure that RSIT.exe is on the your Desktop before running the application!

Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
Once it has finished, two logs will open:

log.txt will be opened maximized.
info.txt will be opened minimized.
Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.
Note: Both logs can also be located within this folder rsit at the root of your installed Hard-Drive. EG: C:\rsit

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

How is you computer performing now, any further symptoms and or problems encountered?
Rooter Log.
Both RSIT logs. <-- Post them individually please, IE: one Log per post/reply.

I did this, but I didn't take any action after the application started. Please let me know how to proceed. I didn't want to act without checking with you first.

3.

How is you computer performing now, any further symptoms and or problems encountered?

No additional symptoms or problems that I'm aware of. Several applications started when I rebooted, which slowed the startup process a bit. Nothing else I can think of.

Hi. :)

I did this, but I didn't take any action after the application started. Please let me know how to proceed. I didn't want to act without checking with you first.
OK when you run the application it will list all that can be safely removed, so you can do so if you so wish. If still unsure I can advise specifically which start-ups to remove.

You will need to disable TeaTimer again though unfortunately as it has returned but that could not be helped. Refer to my prior instructions here (http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=347547&postcount=2).

Hard-Drive Free Space Advice:

System drive E: has 14 GB (9%) free of 153 GBThis is considered dangerously low. A Hard-Drive requires a bare minimum of 15% available free space to be able to function correctly, but at least 25% is better in my opinion.

I advise you read this article: What to do if your Computer's running slowly (http://www.malwareremoval.com/tutorials/runningslowly.php) and choose to uninstall some software you do not need, this is just my advice as the lack of current Hard-Drive space will be impacting on overall system performance. and or move any documents/files/pictures etc to a form of removable media.

This is just my advice as the lack of current Hard-Drive space will be impacting on overall system performance. Plus eventually any type of system maintenance will prove to be problematic.

Peer to Peer application advice:

Please read the forum policy (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=282) concerning the aforementioned. Now remove the below from your machine thank you.

E:\Program Files\uTorrent\uTorrent.exe

Note: It does not have a uninstaller persay so merely remove the folder:-

E:\Program Files\uTorrent <-- This folder.

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

Please download TFC (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/TFC.exe) to your desktop,
Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
Click the Start button in the bottom left of TFC
If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.
Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It should not take longer than a couple of minutes , and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php) to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and select then follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please post that log in your next reply.
The log can also be found here:
Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Click on the Logs radio tab.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

When completed the above, please post back the following:

How is you computer performing now? Any problems encountered and or any further symptoms?
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log.
A new RSIT Log. <-- Only one will be created this time and that is all I require.

I'm having problems getting Search and Destroy to open so I can change the Tea Timer settings. I can't get past the "check in progress" screen. S&D hangs up/freezes on this screen every time. I've tried this four times today. Do you have any suggestions on how I can work around this problem?

You mentioned earlier that I had too little free space on my hard drive, which could impact system performance. I deleted numerous files from my E: drive and now have about 55 gb free on my 150 gb hard drive.

I'd appreciate any suggestions you might have.

Thanks,

Max

Hi. :)

OK no problem, merely uninstall Spybot for now and you may reinstall when I give the all clear.

Hi.

1.

I did everything you asked, including uninstalling Spybot. My computer seems to be working normally. No new or unusual problems. Keep in mind, the main problems I was having were Norton Antivirus not working properly, and Spybot not working properly. So far, so good. :)

2.

StartUpLite:

Please download this small application from here.

It is very simple to use and quite effective and will advise about any unnecessary system startups that can be safely removed.

I would appreciate any advice you can offer about what start-up items to remove. Once all this is done, I know which start-ups I want to remove, but I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts, too.

Hi. :)

I would appreciate any advice you can offer about what start-up items to remove. Once all this is done, I know which start-ups I want to remove, but I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts, too. Well the actual application will tell you which can be safely removed............however I do appreciate regardless the fact it does it can be a wee bit disconcerting. So with this in mind I will target for removal those applications that had been previously removed with MSConfig so that should improve the boot-up time and overall performance etc.

In case I haven't said it before, I REALLY appreciate all of your help.
You are very welcome!

Next:

Only carry out this part if you do not wish for Open Office quick start to be available after every system reboot. The rest of the start-ups are targeted below in the custom OTM script.

Please re-open HiJackThis and select Do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below (if present):

O4 - S-1-5-18 Startup: OpenOffice.org 2.4.lnk = E:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org 2.4\program\quickstart.exe (User 'SYSTEM')
O4 - .DEFAULT Startup: OpenOffice.org 2.4.lnk = E:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org 2.4\program\quickstart.exe (User 'Default user')
O4 - Startup: OpenOffice.org 2.4.lnk = E:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org 2.4\program\quickstart.exe

Now click on Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

Note: No need to reboot the system just yet, we will be shortly.

Backup the Registry:

Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it always wise to create a backup before doing so.

Please navigate to Start >> All Programs >> ERUNT >> ERUNT.

Click on OK within the pop-up menu.
In the next menu under C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT\DD-MM-YYYY under Backup options make sure both the following are selected:
System registry
Current user registry
Next click on OK
When the Question pop-up appears click on Yes
After a short duration the Registry backup is complete! popup will appear
Now click on OK. A backup has been created.
Next:

Please download OTM (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTM.exe) to your Desktop.

Double-click OTM to start the program.
Copy the lines from the codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + B (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

FYI, Norton Antivirus performed an automatic weekly scan of my PC late Friday night. As usual (GRRRRRR) it found no infected files and as far as I can tell it took no action. I just wanted you to know Norton did it's thing automatically, in case that complicates the situation.

Please let me know how to proceed.

Thanks!

Max

Hi. :)

The below flagged by the online scan:-

E:\Program Files\DVDFab 5-Ghost\DVDFab.Plat.5.2.3.0.Final\DVDFab Platinum 5.2.3.0 - Final GHostHunter\DVDFab5230.exe
E:\Program Files\DVDFab 5-Ghost\DVDFab.Plat.5.2.3.0.Final.rar Rather than actually removing the files I suggest you remove the actual application as it appears it may have been downloaded as a torrent and the reason why it flagged as infected.

I also advise you empty the Norton AntiVirus Quarantine folder as a precaution.

Not a problem the scheduled scan ran, it actually not having found anything is a good sign and you have to bare in mind the actual detections will based upon the actual internal database and the updates etc.

For peace of mind I advise you consider running a online scan a minimum of once per month.

Next:

Out of date Adobe and Java installations pose a security risk. They can be used by malware as a means to infect a computer and or re-infect. We will update both shortly.

Now please go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

Adobe Reader 9
Java(TM) 6 Update
Java(TM) 6 Update 4
Java(TM) 6 Update 7

To do so, click once on each of the above in turn to highlight and then click on the Remove button.

Note: Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

New Adobe Reader Installation:

Go here (ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/9.x/9.2/enu/) and click on AdbeRdr920_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.
New Java Installation:

Click here (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) to visit Java's website.
Scroll down to Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 17. Click on Download.
Select Windows from the drop-down list for Platform.
Select Multi-language from the drop-down list for Language.
Check (tick) I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement box and click on Continue.
Click on jre-6u17-windows-i586.exe link to download it and save this to a convenient location.
Double click on jre-6u17-windows-i586.exe to install Java.
Let myself know when completed the above and if any further issues, thank you.

Hi.

I deleted this folder and its contents (bolded items):

E:\Program Files\DVDFab 5-Ghost\DVDFab.Plat.5.2.3.0.Final\DVDFab Platinum 5.2.3.0 - Final GHostHunter\DVDFab5230.exeDVDFab.Plat.5.2.3.0.Final\DVDFab Platinum 5.2.3.0 - Final GHostHunter\DVDFab5230.exe

And deleted this as well:

E:\Program Files\DVDFab 5-Ghost\DVDFab.Plat.5.2.3.0.Final.rar

Does this accomplish what you intended? Please let me know if i need to take additional action.

Also, I removed the Java and Adobe Reader items you listed and installed the updated versions, per your instructions.

My PC seems to be working normally. No additional issues to report.

Please let me know how to proceed.

Thanks,

Max

Hi. :)

What you mentioned is fine. One point I will raise though is your current version of Internet Explorer is out of date and deemed a security risk.

I would at least update to the following:-

Windows Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=9AE91EBE-3385-447C-8A30-081805B2F90B&displaylang=en)

Even if you rarely use the aforementioned browser it is not wise to have out of date applications installed on your machine.

Next:

Congratulations your computer now appears to be malware free!

Now I have some tasks for your good self to carry out as part of a clean up process and some advice about online safety.

Importance of Regular System Maintenance:

I advice you read both of the below listed topics as this will go a long way to keeping your Computer performing well.

Help! My computer is slow! (http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/slowcomputer.html)

Also so is this:

What to do if your Computer is running slowly (http://www.malwareremoval.com/tutorials/runningslowly.php)

Clean up with OTM:

Double-click OTM to start the program.
Close all other programs apart from OTM as this step will require a reboot
On the OTM main screen, press the CleanUp! button
Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.
The above process should clean up and remove the vast majority of scanners used and logs created etc.

Any left over merely delete yourself and empty the Recycle Bin.

Reset the System Restore points:

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >>System Tools >> System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close
Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start >> Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm
Now some advice for on-line safety:

Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware:

This is a excellent application and I advise you keep this installed. Check for updates and run a scan once a week.

Other installed security software:

Your presently installed security application, Norton AntiVirus automatically checks for updates and downloads/installs them with every system reboot and or periodically if the machine is left running providing a internet connection is active.

I advise you also run a complete scan with this also once per week.

Erunt:

Emergency Recovery Utility NT, I advice you keep this installed as a means to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.

Myself I would actually create a new back up once per week as this along with System Restore may prove to be invaluable if something unforeseen occurs!

Keep your system updated:

Microsoft releases patches for Windows and other products regularly:

I advise you visit: http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
Install the Active X
Once installed it will advise set Auto-Updates if not set and you then you will be able to manually check for updates also via:
Start >> All Programs >> Microsoft Updates
Be careful when opening attachments and downloading files:

Never open email attachments, not even if they are from someone you know. If you need to open them, scan them with your antivirus program before opening.
Never open emails from unknown senders.
Beware of emails that warn about viruses that are spreading, especially those from antivirus vendors. These email addresses can be easily spoofed. Check the antivirus vendor websites to be sure.
Be careful of what you download. Only download files from known sources. Also, avoid cracked programs. If you need a particular program that costs too much for you, try finding free alternatives on Sourceforge (http://sourceforge.net/) or Pricelessware (http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/).
Stop malicious scripts:

Windows by default allow scripts (which is VBScript and JavaScript) to run and some of these scripts are malicious. Use Noscript (http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/noscript.exe) by Symantec or Script Defender (http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/system/sdefend.htm) by AnalogX to handle these scripts.

Make your Internet Explorer safer:

From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.

Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.Avoid Peer to Peer software:

P2P may be a great way to get lots of seemingly freeware, but it is a great way to get infected as well. There's no way to tell if the file being shared is infected. Worse still, some worms spread via P2P networks, infecting you as well. My advice avoid these types of software applications.

Hosts File:

A Hosts file is like a phone book. You look up someone's name in the phone book before calling him/her. Similarly, your computer will look up the website's IP address before you can view the website.

Hosts file will replace your current Hosts file with another one containing well-known advertisement sites, spyware sites and other bad sites. This new Hosts file will protect you by re-directing these bad sites to 127.0.0.1.

Here are some Hosts files:

MVPS Hosts File (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm)
Bluetack's Hosts File (http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=8406)
Bluetack's Host Manager (http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php?autocom=faq&CODE=02&qid=16)
hpHosts (http://hphosts.mysteryfcm.co.uk/?s=Download).
Only use one of the above.

Finally a educational source:

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klein(updated by tashi):

So how did I get infected in the first place? (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=279)

Some consider this article outdated, personally I still think it bares relevance and the authors are well respected in the Anti-Malware community and by myself also!

Any questions, feel free to ask? If not stay safe!

Hi.

I've taken all of the actions you recommended and I think I'm all set.

Just wanted to say again... Thank You. I really appreciate all of your help, energy and insight. Not only is my PC clean, protected and running like a champ again, I learned some things along the way.

One last thing: I uninstalled S&D earlier. I'm planning to re-install it and use it more intensively than before. I assume that won't cause any problems. Please let me know if there's some reason I should NOT install S&D.

Best regards,

Max

Hi. :)

You are very welcome!

Regarding Spybot-S&D, by all means reinstall and enable TeaTimer if you so wish. The latter will provide some further protection for your system.

One point however, if you have opted to install a Host-File no need to use the Immunise feature with Spybot-S&D, as this is a actual Host File also basically. Or visa versa etc.
