My Spybot S&D takes 4 minutes from doubleclick to GUI 1.6.2.
Then 45 sec to 1 minute to download updates then
4 minutes from 'exit' to GUI.
The actual scan takes about 45 minutes.
bottom line shows 751567.
Also SpyBot-SD resident is always the last progrm to load
on startuo. Boot usally takes from 7 to 9 minutes.

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 built in 2001.
Intel Prem 4Cpu 2.4 ghz
256 ram
xp home sp 3
Also run Norton anti virus.
Any clues to the slowness?

Do you have Signs of Malware (http://www.virusvault.us/signs1.html)?
Did Norton Antivirus find some Malware?
The biggest problem could be your RAM!! I guess 256 MB isn't enough. Restart your computer. After Windows and every tool has loaded, start the task manager and tell me how much RAM your computer uses at the moment.

:thanks:

Hi Jim,

Ran SpyBot -- cleaned
What do you mean with "cleaned"?
Did Spybot find Malware and cleaned it or did the scan come up clean (=Spybot didn't find Malware)? :thanks:

42 MB doesn't sound much to me.

Please answer my question from my previous answer (Signs of Malware) and whether Spybot found Malware or not.

Hi Jim,

Boot usally takes from 7 to 9 minutes.
By the sounds of this, I'm thinking your computer is in general running slow rather than just Spybot.

As Matt said, 256 megabytes of RAM is definately on the lower side of things. ;)

What version of Norton Anti-virus are you running? Older versions were renowned for their bloat and their ability to slow down users' computers. For a lighter alternative, you may want to take a look at this thread:
- recommended anti virus (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=9289)

Make sure you only have one antivirus installed at a time as multiple installations can cause conflicts!

Personally, I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials which you can download from here:

(Note. There only seems to be a 32bit download for Windows XP)

Thanks Honda for the responce.
My Norton AV is 16.7.2.11 which is a 2009 version.
I will look at your recomendations.
However, I think you may be right on about the
general "slowness".
Besides the low memory, my USB is 1.1 which
contributes to the slowness since I use a Cable modem via USB.
Thanks

I would seriously consider adding more memory. The Dell 8200 can take up to 2GB. It has 4 slots and requires matching pairs of memory (i.e. if you wanted to add, say 1GB to your 256MB, you would get two matching 500MB memory modules and install them in slots 2 and 4, assuming your 256MB (= 2x128MB) are installed in slots 1 and 3). Make sure you get compatible memory (RDRAM PC800 (non-ECC)). The Dimension 8200 does not support Dual Channel (DDR2) or ECC.

The manual for the 8200 is available here:

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim8200/

It gives instructions on how to add memory. Not difficult at all.
