PC hijacked

I'm trying to help a friend who is having pc problems. He was on craig's list when he got a pop-up that looked like and said it was from microsoft. It said he had 28 threats and to download. He tried to exit and the download started automatically. This happend two days ago and he called me this morning asking for help. My Dad (Phil Skelley) was always there to help and try to teach me but sadly he's watching me now from heaven now. I would greatly appreciate your time and effort. Hello Cheryl,

I was one of your dads best friends, he is sorely missed.

You have a rogue program on this system, lets do this.


Please download Malwarebytes from Here (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php) or Here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html)


Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.

When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Post the report and also a new HJT log please

Hi Ken, Thank you so much for helping me. I downloaded MBAM and installed it. when I clicked on perform scan it shut down. I tried several more times unsuccessfully. When I first went over to look at the pc and tried to sign in to Safer Networking the browser would redirect to dirbz.com. I came home, sent the link via email and was able to download HJT and connect to SN.

Long story on Hijackthis , it was sold to Trendmicro a few years ago and they have done nothing with it so its become a bit useless in detecting a lot of malicious activity on your system.

See if you can run these, they wont fix anything but we can see more of whats going on.


Please download RootRepeal from one of these locations and save it to your desktop

Check the box for your main system drive (Usually C:, and press Ok.
Allow RootRepeal to run a scan of your system. This may take some time.

Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.

Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
Notepad will open with the results, click no to the Optional_Scan
Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.

Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Good Evening Ken,

It took me a while but I finally made it. Every time I tried to come to the site I was either redirected or the pc shut down. I was finally able to use the link I forwarded to Casey's email. I clicked on the link for RootRepeal and as soon as the download started the computer shut down. I repeated these steps four times with no luck at all. Casey told me he had been trying all day to access email without success. I was lucky I guess to get as far as I did.
I'll try whatever you suggest. I'm extremely grateful for your help Ken and so is Casey.

Something nasty has got a hold of this system.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

Try running the programs I already posted in Safemode and lets see if they will run from there.

Try Malwarebytes first, then RootRepeal and then DDS


To Enter Safemode

Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode with Networking
Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard

If still no luck than do this.


You need to enable windows to show all files and folders, instructions Here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html)

Go to VirusTotal (http://www.virustotal.com/) and submit these files for analysis, just use the BROWSE feature and then Send File , you will get a report back, post the report into this thread for me to see.

Please run this free online virus scanner from ESET (http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner)

Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
Click Start
When asked, allow the activex control to install
Click Start
Make sure that the option Remove found threats is ticked, and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
Click Scan
Wait for the scan to finish
Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic


I'm giving you a lot to do and hopefully something will run and let us see whats going on and maybe remove some garbage also.
