Firstly let me just say that im not all that familiar with correcting errors caused by malware or spyware so if you do decide to help me please be aware that at times i may not know what you mean or possibly might need a step-by-step walkthrough on how to do something! :S apologies in advance if that's the case.
The other thing is that i only see him once a week generally so its really difficult but i really need some help with this cos his computer is slowly disintergrating lol
Ok so let me get to it.
I've downloaded the latest versions of AVG and the wonderful Spybot but i cant get either of them to work.
Its a Vista machine that was put together by the apes at PC World but its a fairly decent spec - only thing was it had a rubbish drive sentry thing which requires money to work much like a slot machine... thinking of my dad's wallet, naturally i went for the cheaper option being that its not my money i'd be spending, i downloaded AVG and S&D and everything was working fine for a while.
I'm guessing my bro started experiencing problems with the machine about a month or two after not updating the programs with the latest stuff/running scans etc
Anyways, a couple of months after the config worm or whatever its called was announced my bro told me that he's suddenly not able to access sites to help remove spyware etc so i figured it could be that worm thing. Run the scans as microsofts site said to do but i had to leave before it finished running its scans, my bro tells me it found 'something' and he deleted it.
Problem is we're not able to get S&D working or AVG so im unable to run any protection on it, which its obviously less than ideal. Also occaisionally when trying to access websites we get re-directed to somewhere completely random hence why im sure we've got some sort of infection.
So i'd be really grateful if someone would help with this, but please bare in mind that it might take me a while to respond due to the living arrangements/location of the computer.
Just let me know where you want me to start and what logs i need to get and from where :D
