I followed the path
Programfiles\Spybot\Updates
on my own computer and saw the following files
advcheck163
advcheck164
advcheck165.

There is no need for you to uninstall/reinstall Spybot or delete files in the Spybot folder. By the way, I got the same message. :D:

Don't worry, everything is fine. :bigthumb:

The above EXEcutable files (.exe) are actually the "installers" that update/replace the necessary file, which is located in Program Files\Spybot - Search&Destroy\
and is a Dynamic Link Library (.dll) file named
advcheck.dll

However, before you attempt to look for that file, be advised that it is classified as both a HIDDEN and a PROTECTED file. As such, if you want to look for it, you have to "reveal" it...
in XP, go to Control Panel, Folder Options, the View tab, and
1) check the box Show Hidden Files and Folders; and
2) UNcheck the box Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
When revealed, you should see the version, which should be 1.6.5.20

I wonder why SpyBot Search & Destroy doesn't clean these files up after updating, perhaps keeping the latest in the Updates folder. Surely, there is a better way to keep track of updates rather than archiving them all.

If all but the latest version is manually deleted from the Updates folder, I wonder if the weekly update would list and download them again. The hard drive space isn't the issue. After all, Microsoft craps all over the system disk far more.

I do not seem to be able to find the "advcheck.dll" file, When I use the path Program Files\Spybot - Search&Destroy\advcheck.dll spybot scans something.

All I can find is the "advcheck" files.

I have them unhidden and I am sure many months ago I could find it but I think I have forgotten how!

Any help thanks?

Hi gurty,

Go to your 'Spybot - Search & Destroy' folder in 'Program Files' (assuming your Windows drive is C:, the path should be C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\).

Follow ky331's advice concerning advcheck.dll being hidden and protected and follow the instructions on how to reveal the file:

However, before you attempt to look for that file, be advised that it is classified as both a HIDDEN and a PROTECTED file. As such, if you want to look for it, you have to "reveal" it...

After you have finished, it is recommended you go back into Folder Options and hide files/folders and operating system files again.

honda

I had a few go's at this and I could not see it till I was in admin!
Might be a vista thing.

Thanks
