• Welcome Guest, to the Spybot Forums! It's 2025, and we just upgraded our forum software.

Today is Safer Internet Day, and with our new forum, you can finally use passkeys to login. That was about time!

Of course, you could ask if a forum is still useful, with so many social media networks out there where you might already have an account, and met a lot of users. You can now use your login from some of those networks to log in here. And by posting here, your question and data is stored on our servers and not automatically shared with a whole social media network.

We'll also start using the forum for small bits of information, announcements and more again.

advcheck.dll showing read only attrib. & updating

I just updated spybots definitions. The command window came up for a few seconds, then went off and this message came up: C:/Program Files/Spybot S&D/advcheck.dll
This file is marked as read only. Click Remove to remove the read only attribute and try again, Ignore to skip this file or Abort to cancel this installation.
I hit (I) Ignore. Is that what I should have done? Spybot S&D came back up, and it shows the last detection update as 11/25/2009.
I searched the forum and the bold lines are in response to what I found
The advcheck.dll file in the spybot folder is v.1.6.5.20
I do not have any advcheckxxx(where x is a number like 163, 164, 165) in this folder.

But I didn't find anything suggesting what I should do.
Do I need to un-check the read only properties on the file and then re-download the latest detections, or just un-check the read only properties on the file and do nothing else or just do nothing?
Thanks!

Hi Matt,
Thanks for the reply. I found these two threads when I was searching for the problem. I did not hit Retry, I hit Ignore. My question was do I need to go to C:/Program Files/Spybot S&D and remove the read only attribute from advcheck.dll and try to re download? If I don't need to do anything, should the read only attribute be removed from advcheck.dll for future updates?
Thanks.

I would like you to do this:

1) Go to the folder C:\Program Files\Spybot S&D\Updates\
2) Double click on advcheck165 to start the installation (if you use Windows Vista or Windows 7, right click on advcheck165 and choose run as administrator)
3) Close all open programs, especially Spybot.
4) Follow the installation client and finish the installation.
5) Everything should be fine now. :bigthumb:

Let us know if you had any problems. ;)

Matt,
Went there, found it, did it!
Thanks again.
Will I need to hit Retry every time I update?
