Hello,

I was recently infected with a virus that redirects search engine links to random spam sites and causes browsers to slow down in general. I've run Spybot and MalwareBytes and neither have been able to find the culprit.

Here's my HJT log:

Update: something called Antivirus Pro installed itself and now blocks all functions related to combating viruses (i.e., opening antivirus programs, scanners, task manager, launching msconfig and even shutting the computer down). I see the icon for it in the taskbar but have no way of disabling its grip on my computer's functionality.

Hi, Welcome to the forum.
My name is Cypher, and I will be helping you with your malware problems.
Before we begin...please note the following important guidelines.

The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only!.
Using these instructions on a different computer, can damage that computer and possibly make it inoperable!
If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
Only post your problem at One help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
Only reply to this thread do not start another, Please continue responding until I give you the "All Clean"
Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.
Please DO NOT install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process. This adds more items to be researched.
Print each set of instructions... if possible...your Internet connection might not be available during some fix processes.
Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
The logs from the tools we use can take some time to research so please be patient.
I am currently reviewing your log, and will return as soon as possible with your next set of instructions.

In the meantime Please post an Uninstall list.

Open HijackThis.
Click on the Open the Misc Tools section button.
Look under System tools.
Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
Click on the Save list... button.
It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply.

In your next reply.

Hi DU Chris.
Is this a business computer or is it for personal use?

DU Chris

It's a computer for personal use. However, I do sometimes use it on my university's network, whose rules require that I have a Sophos as my antivirus program.

Hi Cypher,

Thanks for the quick reply. My computer still has issues. Search engine links still redirect and the computer in general is slow (e.g., slow boot-up, CPU usage always hovers around 50%, internet browsers are slow). Here is the Gmer log:

Hi DU Chris.

Please disable your anti virus as it will interfere with the below fix.
For instructions on how to do this see Here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=114351&view=findpost&p=1300040)
Note: Don't forget to re-enable it after the fix.

Download and Run ComboFix

Please download ComboFix, and find instructions on how to properly run it from Here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix)
Make sure you install the recovery console if asked to.
The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time and can be a lifesaver later.
Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
Run ComboFix as instructed by the tutorial. Normal scan time is 10-20 minutes. When ComboFix is finished running, a log will be opened. Include this log in your next reply.

In your next reply.

Please let me know how your computer is performing now.

Hi DU Chris.

your latest set of logs appear to be clean!

Rootkit

Unfortunately Your computer had a Rootkit. A rootkit is a set of software tools intended for concealing running processes, files or system data from the operating system.
You are strongly advised to do the following:

Change all your passwords (ISP login password, your email address(es) passwords, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, Amazon, online groups and forums and any other online activities you carry out which require a username and password).

To help you understand more, please take some time to read the following articles:

What are rootkits from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rootkit)
Why are rootkits dangerous (http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/rootkit.html)

Time for some housekeeping

Click on Start >> Run...
Now type in ComboFix /Uninstall into the and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the /Uninstall, it needs to be there.
http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk173/Dakeyras_album2/CF-Uninstall.png
The above procedure will reset your System Restore and clear out the backups and quarantines created during the course of this fix.

Next.

OTC

Download OTC (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTC.exe) by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop. This tool will remove all the tools we used to clean your pc.

Double-click OTC.exe
Click the CleanUp! button
Select Yes when the Begin cleanup Process? Prompt appears
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Reset SP2 Firewall:

Click on Start >> Run... and cut/paste in the following and click on OK

firewall.cplClick on the Advanced tab >> Restore Defaults >> At the prompt click on Yes >> OK

Now click on the General tab >> select Off(not recommended) >> OK.

Note: No need for it to be active after the reset becuse you have the ZoneAlarm Firewall active.

Next.

Install internet explorer 8

You can install IE 8 from Here (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx)

Next.

Update FireFox.

In the FireFox browser click Help > Check for updates.

Next,

Update your service pack

You can find information on how to update to XPSP3 Here (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsxp/sp3/default.mspx)

Next.

Update Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

Launch the application and click Update > Check for updates.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Install Sitehound
SiteHound is a toolbar for Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox which alerts you if you're about to enter a potentially dangerous website.
You can find more information and download it from Here (http://www.firetrust.com/en/products/sitehound)

Install WinPatrol
As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge.
For more information, please visit HERE (http://www.winpatrol.com/)

MVPS Hosts

Install MVPS Hosts File From Here (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm)
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
You can Find the Tutorial HERE (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm)

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector (http://secunia.com/software_inspector/)
F-secure Health Check (http://www.f-secure.com/weblog/archives/00001356.html)

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer
You can do that HERE (http://www.update.microsoft.com)

Read some information HERE (http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/prevention.html) On how to prevent Malware

Is your pc running slow?
Read What to do if your Computer is running slowly (http://www.malwareremoval.com/tutorials/runningslowly.php)

I would be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can be closed.

Safe surfing!

Hi Cypher,

Thank you so much for your help. You and all the rest of the security team here do great work - and you do it as volunteers, no less.

My computer is running great, but I did have one final question. My computer used to show an indicator on the screen with my speaker volume whenever I pressed the buttons to alter the volume (this is a laptop). Now it doesn't show the volume no matter what I do. I think this started after running ComboFix. I believe this function is part of Dell QuickSet. Should I just download QuickSet again from Dell?

Cypher

Hi DU Chris.
I have checked and nothing that ComboFix removed would of caused the problem your having with the volume icon.
I also don't think it is to do with Dell QuickSet.
Please try this, Right click on the system tray/taskbar and chose Properties > Notification area.
In system icons make sure Volume is ticked.
Reboot your computer and let me know if that fixes the problem.

DU Chris

Hi Cypher,

I see the volume icon in the system tray, however there used to be a graphic that looked like this:
http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/2263/volume.jpg
That appeared to indicate the volume level each time I changed it.
This link suggested that the above volume bar is part of Dell QuickSet (see "Adjusting the volume"): http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/wsM90/en/ug/media.htm
I guess somewhere along the line I lost QuickSet, as "quickset.exe" can't be found on my computer anymore.

Hi DU Chris.
You can try reinstalling QuickSet to see if that fixes the problem.
Before you try that please create a new system restore point before trying the re-installation of QuickSet.

If you are not sure whether the System Restore feature is turned on and active, let's check, before we go any further.
Turn ON System Restore
If you know System Restore is ON and active, proceed to "Create a New System Restore Point." Otherwise...
Click Start,
Right-click My Computer, then click Properties...from the menu.
In the System Properties dialog box, click the System Restore tab.
Uncheck...the Turn off System Restore check box, if checked.
Click OK.
After a few moments, the System Properties dialog box closes.
Note: If the System Restore function was NOT active... by turning it ON, a restore point was automatically created.
You do not have perform the "Create a New System Restore Point" step.
Create a New System Restore Point.
Click Start,
Select All Programs, Accessories, System Tools... press System Restore.
At the Welcome screen...select Create a restore point...then press Next.
In the description box, type a name to describe this restore point.
System Restore automatically adds (to your description) the current date and time.
Click Create...to finish creating this restore point.
Click Close to exit System Restore.
Unless you use some other method to create system restore points... it is advisable to leave this feature ON and active.

The problems you are still experiencing are not coming from malware as all of your latest logs have come back clean.
When I am faced with this type of problem I go to these sites below. I have asked for help there myself and they have always been able to solve my problems.

Tech support guy (http://forums.techguy.org/)

Windows (http://forums.techguy.org/49-operating-systems/) - problems with operating systems and windows problems.
All other software (http://forums.techguy.org/18-all-other-software/) - problems with all other software.

And

What the tech (http://forums.whatthetech.com/forums.html)

Windows (http://forums.whatthetech.com/Microsoft_Windows_f119.html) - problems with operating systems and windows problems.
All other software (http://forums.whatthetech.com/Other_software_f124.html) - problems with all other software.

So as I said above your logs are clean, I hope you can resolve your other problem with the links that I provided.

Please let me know if you have any other questions and if not this topic can be closed.
