Hello

I am trying to clean up the system of a family friend, it
was laced w/ spyware. I have been successful in the removal
of some, but have two components which persist.

I have run both Spybot (1.4) and Ad-Aware(1.06). I downloaded updates
for both products on 6-23.

Adaware indicates that a item called "Adware.Look2Me" (4 objects)
is present. Each time I tell Adaware to quarantine/remove the offender,
it indicates that a file C:\Windows\System32\gp4ol3h31.dll
is present and in use (most recent run).

Spybot indicates that cmdService is present. I have tryed
repeatedly to have Spybot remove it, both in Windows Normal and
Safe Mode.

The most recent run of Spybot indicates that settings:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\cmdService -and-
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControl\Services\cmdService

are present. There was a ControlSet002 present previously, but Spybot
was able to remove it. These two it can not remove.

I have downloaded and installed the 'local host' file from
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/ per the instructions on that
site.

Performed the steps listed here:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=279 except 6 & 7.

Installed and tailored ZoneAlarm (free version).

Did system virus scan w/ Avast - killed 62 (deleted files) - done
at boot time - no log available. System also has Norton AV and
McAfee Av. NAV defns are 1 yr out of date, can not tell how old
McAfee defn's are. Further snooping in Avast shows virus defs
dated 06/23/06. Running full scan w/ Avast at this time - not
yet complete. May be able post a scan log in a follow-up post.

Ran SpyBot after the virus scan. The cmdService bot is still
present, and ControlSet002 has returned, after having been
deleted previously. Clicked "fix selected problems", ControlSet002
shows being cleaned up (yet again).

Connected to the web (dial up), attempting to run TrendMicro virus
scan. Unable to access Trendmicro web site - getting page
not found. Am able to issue PING for TM url from a MS DOS
command prompt and get turn around.

"local hosts" file appears to be working - getting numerous
spybot urls showing up in IE address bar - all are failing
to work. Attempting to access 'www.msn.com' fails when
keyed in the address box.

Verified dial-up networking TCPIP settings against the computer
I am working from on this post. Settings match. Same settings worked
last night on sick computer when I initially tried to fix it.

Able to PING www.google.com, so it would appear that DNS lookups
and TCPIP is/are working.

Is it possible that a bot is saying "if I can't get out, no one gets
out?"

Shut down connection, booted in to safe mode. Ran Spy Bot.
Spy Bot again indicates that cmdService is still present, and
all three control sets. Did fix, Spy Bot indicates it took out
control set 2.

Installed and ran HJT. Log follows:

Download Look2Me-Destroyer.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=7) to your desktop.

* Close all windows before continuing.
* Double-click Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to run it.
* Put a check next to Run this program as a task.
* You will receive a message saying Look2Me-Destroyer will close and re-open in approximately 1 minute. Click OK
* When Look2Me-Destroyer re-opens, click the Scan for L2M button, your desktop icons will disappear, this is normal.
* Once it's done scanning, click the Remove L2M button.
* You will receive a Done Scanning message, click OK.
* When completed, you will receive this message: Done removing infected files! Look2Me-Destroyer will now shutdown your computer, click OK.
* Your computer will then shutdown.
* Turn your computer back on.
* Please post the contents of Look2Me-Destroyer.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

Thanks for your reply.

Well, it took 4 trys, but I finally got Look2Me to go in to scan mode, the first 3x it simply didn't wake up. Found that I had to have no open windows as you instructed, and to close all possible minimized icons on the lower right corner of the system tray.

Got a complete scan, got the remove message - told it to remove.

Got a popup box labeled 'Copyfile' w/ the text "Error: 75 Path/File access error" - only option was "ok".

Got "removal complete and shutdown" msg. Got power off of system unit.

Powered up after a minute wait.

Sorry for the delay in responding.

Ran HJT and deleted entries you specified. Booted in to safe mode - but my timing ws off w/ the F8 key - so it took me 3-4 tries to get there.

Looked for the programs you asked to be deleted - found none of them. This was with a manual search of the directories and using Windows Search.

Ran AFT as indicated.

Rebooted to Windows normal. Ran Spybot. It indicates commandSvc is still present. It also found a 2nd - Windows Antivirus Disable or similar name. That one it was able to delete.

Suggestions?

You will only be able to run one antivirus here is instructions to remove norton (http://basconotw.mvps.org/SymRem.htm)

Download Ewido Security Suite (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/) it is a trial version of the program.
Install ewido security suite
Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
On the left hand side of the main screen click update
Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/)

Once the updates are installed do the following:
Click on scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
Click Save report.
Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite and post the results here.
With a new hijackthis log.

Could you explain in further detail? Is the multiple virus scanners inhibiting
the ability of Spybot to nail the commandSvc bot?

Are 'bots and virus'es tied together?

What will running Ewido do that Avast (virus scan) /Norton/McAfee, Ad-aware and Spybot don't in this situation.

Not trying to poke at your wisdom - just trying to get a better understanding of what is wrong and the process to fix....

Many Thanks

Not trying to poke at your wisdomThats fine sorry I need to drink more coffee you need to disable all your AV's but one ;) Sorry I missed that. Ewido Spybot Ad-aware are all alike but not every anti-spyware targets or finds everything. Which is one of the reasons that more than one are most often used. I use all three but only spybot's teatimer. I still would like to see a log from ewido.

Removed Norton, McAfee. Avast is still installed. No more boot time complaints
from it about Norton.

Started Ewido - 1st time up - even before I could do the updates, it
found a bot - Downloader.small

Installed updates manually - started scan.

Ewido got 19,886 hits, 19,875 in one directory. Am guessing from the contents
that these were from file sharing app - possibly Limewire - all zip/avi/exe type files.

Told Ewido to quarantine all. Edited log file (dropped redundant entries) for Ewido and complete HJT log follow.

Ran Spybot - Command Service is still with us.

Double-click Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to run it. Put a check next to Run this program as a task. Like before, run ewido again this time deleting everything.

Reboot, rescan with HJT and post a new log here.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment

Started a scan with Adaware prior to finding your post. Adaware indicates
6 minor bots present. Quarantined same.

Ran Look2meDestroyer. Got "Copyfile" error box. Msg reads "Error 75: Path/File access error". Got done removing infected files & will shutdown msg. System Shutdown (hard - power off). Powered up and booted.

Tryed to start Ewido - as if nothing happened. Did 2 more times. Still no display as
last night. Hard drive chattering. Booted again.

Started Ewido - still nothing showing on screen. Launched Task Mgr. 2 copys of Ewido running, 1 has 38,360K, other had about 8600K. Killed smaller. Ewido w/ 38,000K memory running at about 2-5% CPU - hard drive still chattering. No other indication Ewido is running. Activity on the hard drive slowed. Got a pop up from Zone Alarm indicating that
Ewido wanted access to the web (none active).

Finally got a Ewido icon on the right corner of the task bar. Only trace of a scan / files
is that from last night. Told Ewido to scan.
.
It found two new objects - Trojan.Zapchast.bl & Downloader.Agent.a - deleted both per your instructions.

W/ regard to your question - how does system behave?

Ran Spybot - Command Service still being reported. 3 problems (Ctrlset002/001/Current Controlset).

Ran Ad-aware - got warning about signature files being 19 days out of date (dial up only connection to the internet). Nothing found.

Ran Avast - Nothing found in memory. Did local disk scan. Avast indicates that
file C:|Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\
Content.IE5\WZEJY1M1\whCC-TRAFE1[1].exe\whiehplr.dll is infected with
Win32:Dialer-567 [Trj]

Tryed to delete it w/ Avast - it gets an error. Was able to delete it manually.

Connected to the internet. Got several alerts from Zone Alarm indicating IE wanted to accept connections from the web. Denied all.

Got the MSN home page. Also Googles home page.

Got a Zone Alarm alert on the following program:

200673212114_mcinfo.exe <---- Looks odd....

Downloaded updates to Spybot, Adaware, Avast.

Having same trouble as prev. described getting Ewido to launch for updates - hard drive is chattering. Task Mgr indicates Ewido is running and has 39,800K+ of memory in use, 2-5% of
cpu in use. Ewido icon finally displayed on the task bar, and was able to access the program and updates.

Questions:

Look2meDestroyer found stuff in the system restore files/registry entrys. Is there a way
to delete / flush them out?

Do these bots/worms/viruses mask one another? I would have thought that after doing a
quarantine all last night w/ Ewido that they would be gone, yet it found two new ones...

Will there be a point at which all of the files which have been quarantined by Ewido, Avast, etc can be deleted?

Next step is?

Some of these files my have hidden atributes.
Set your system to show all files; Click Here (http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=30) if you're unsure how to do this.
The following have randomly named file names, and as such are normally malware.
Click start then my computer and follow their process tree.
Right click on the file and go to Properties.
Then go to the Version tab to see what company name it's from.

C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\200673212114_mcinfo.exe

Close all Browser and Program Windows and have HijackThis fix the following.
Do this by checking the box beside each and then clicking on Fix checked.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [sys_up1] C:\Program Files\Common Files\svchostsys\svchostsys.exe
O16 - DPF: {288C5F13-7E52-4ADA-A32E-F5BF9D125F99} (CR64Loader Object) - http://www.miniclip.com/supergerball...GameLoader.dll

Reboot in safe mode, instructions here. (http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=1903)
Once in safe mode, Click start / then my computer / local disk then follow the process tree.
Or using Windows Explorer, locate the first file right click then select delete.

Delete the following file(s) listed in bold.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\svchostsys\svchostsys.exe

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account
which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because
you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

Clearing the restore points

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Will there be a point at which all of the files which have been quarantined by Ewido, Avast, etc can be deleted? They can be deleted now. After run disk-defragmenter

The 200673212114_mcinfo.exe pgm is a remnent of McAfee anti virus - specificly
McAfee Application installer.

Also found these references via Google:

http://www.auditmypc.com/process/mcinfo.asp

http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=982322&admit=-682735245+1152147185261+28353475 <---- this one talks about some monkey business that Adaware plays w/ this program. At this time, I can't find in the directory that HJT named for mcinfo.exe, but Windows search did find it in C:\Windows\Prefetch.

Killed the O4 and O16 registry entries you indicated w/ HJT. Booted in safe mode. Chased directory chain for SvcHostsys - .exe file is not present - changed settings via Folder
Options to show hidden files. Made no differance. Could HJT have deleted the .exe along
w/ the registry entry?

Booted back into Normal mode - did a Windows search for svchostsys.exe - found following:

C:\Windows\Prefetch\svchostsys.exe-20ed65f5.pf
C:\Program Files\Common Files\svchostsys\svchostsys.exe.config
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\Application History\svchostsys.exe.b933dacc.ini.inuse

Should I blow away the entire Svchostsys directory? How about the Prefetch?

Left System restore alone, pending answers to above questions.

Rebooted - ran Spybot w/ signature file from last night...it indicates that Web Nexus is present, as is Command Service, and YazzleSnowball_Wars.

When told to fix, Spybot indicates it fixed Web Nexus, and Yazzle. Also indicates it
fixed ControlSet002 of Command Service. Spybot wanted to run on reboot - restarted -
run indicates all 3 parts of Command Service are present.

Ran Adaware....shows 10 negligible objects - MRU list. Deleted.

Ran Ewido....found nothing.

Re-ran HJT - found no indication of Svchostsys nor gameloader. Log not enclosed.

Many thanks

Booted back into Normal mode - did a Windows search for svchostsys.exe - found following:

C:\Windows\Prefetch\svchostsys.exe-20ed65f5.pf
C:\Program Files\Common Files\svchostsys\svchostsys.exe.config
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\Application History\svchostsys.exe.b933dacc.ini.inuseAll of these can be deleted.
Yes hijackthis does delete the registry entries.

Delete them Rescan with HJT and post a new log here.

Initially renamed the svchostsys files/directorys - then booted - no
nasty grams at boot time as a result of the rename.

Using REGEDIT - I scanned for svchostsys - there are a number of references
in it yet -

1st @
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\MUICache and 4 data element entrys

2nd @

HK_USERS\S-1-5-21.(long string of numbers)..\Software\Microsoft (matches above)\ w/
4 entrys

Entrys contain program pointers to: C:\Program Files\Common Files\svchostsys\asstdnames.exe

Are these something to delete?

Ran Spybot - it says Command Svc is still present. Deleted the files and directorys
I renamed and emptied the re-cycle bin - reboot, no nastygrams.

Ran Spybot again. Command Svc still present.

Connected to the web. IE launched Windows Update - downloaded critical updates.

Microsoft .Net framework svc pk 1
Genuine Advantage Notification

Ewido downloaded updates.

As far as the way the system runs - better than previous. No more pop up ads like were occuring when I initally posted. The pop up from Zone Alarm about mcinfo.exe is gone.

Zone Alarm does keep telling me that IE wants to accept connections from the net.
I attempted to connect to www.msn.com - but the url on the bottom of the IE window
kept changing to other values. What finally did display was:

www.sogosearch.com/?mysearch=msn&skn=Jungle

Rekeyed MSN URL - finally got there. No ads on the MSN page (local hosts file suppression). Pop-ups from Zone Alarm about accepting connections continue to
occur - source IP address appears to be 137.192.240.5 & 137.192.2.4

Rebooted - allow Windows updates to take effect.

Turned off system restore per your previous post. Booted.
Turn system restore back on. Ran Spybot - Command Svc still present. <----
Ran HJT - log follows at end of this post.

Question - will Command Svc be gotten rid of? I am getting pressure from the machines
owner - she wants it back. It looks to me like there is something still present (spybot) based on what happened when I was connected - sogosearch - etc. Are we at the point where we have done all we can?

Should a re-install of Windows and applications be considered?

I appreciate the time you've taken to assist me - and I've learned a number of things from doing this - but have we gotten as far as we can get? If not - any idea as to how much longer this will take?

Make a restore point.

Then backup your Registry.
click start > run > enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL

Then download RegSeeker http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm.
Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program.
Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK.
When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again.
Then right click within the search results and select delete.
Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing.
Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything).
In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back.
A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.

Is the point of running RegSeeker to clean out the svchostsys entries I asked about? If not, then what am I going after?

Will doing this (Reg Seeker) be what it takes to nail the Command Svc 'bot?

Please clarify.....

After I posted last night, I scanned the system again w/ Ewido. It found nothing.

Thank You

Hi again...

I've been searching the active threads on Command Svc, and see that lots of us have it, Spybot not killing it, etc. :(

So then I went to the closed threads - looking to see how its been resolved - and I came across this thread:

http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=5245

In this thread, at post #4, Calamity Jane wrote:

Run the Fix tool for Command Service:
Please download delcmdservice (by Marckie), and save it to your Desktop.
http://users.telenet.be/marcvn/tools/delcmdservice.zip

* Unzip the content to your Desktop (a folder named delcmdservice)
* Double-click on the delcmdservice folder
* Double-click on delreg.bat to launch the tool
* When the tool has finished, please reboot your computer.

Found the same recommendation in this thread by Rawe:

http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=5052

Is this (delcmdservice) a viable option?

Thanks

Is the point of running RegSeeker to clean out the svchostsys entries I asked about? Yes I think that is what spybot is finding. I belive that the files are gone but the registry entries are still there. Also it will clean out entries left behind from other programs.

More info...

I did a WHOIS on those two IP addresses that kept trying to
get thru Zone Alarm last night.

They belong to ONVOY - a 'net service provider (www.onvoy.com) in Minneapolis Mn, USA. The entire range 137.192.0.0 - 137.192.255.255 belongs to them. They (connect attempts) could be legitimate - depending on how the owner of this machine uses it.

----

I've been trying to figure out if last nights SogoSearch results where due to Command Svc - was IE being redirected? One of the things I noticed was
the the MSN URL kept changing in the url/address box on the bottom of the window... ie www.msn.com, www.www.msn.com, www.www.msn.com.net, etc.

Found a number of blurbs via Google that talk about SogoSearch owning
URLs that end in .com.net, and the IE starts appending suffix's on the domain name when it has trouble locating a web site via DNS lookup (have a dial up connection ton the infected machine and Ewido might have been downloading at the same time). See this URL:

http://news-01.rankforsales.com/news-bn/001109-050905017528396-sem-news.html

-----

Are we going to be able to kill Command Svc? As I indicated last night, the
owner wants her machine back.

Again - thanks for all your efforts. This machine was terribly "buggie" when we started - and is much better now - have fixed alot of stuff.

Run the Fix tool for Command Service and RegSeeker then send it on its way. ;)

Those registry entries in the screen shot you posted sure look like what I saw in the registry when I looked at it w/ REGEDIT (thinking I could blow them away manually when SPybot couldn't, but REGEDIT wouldn't let me do the delete).

Can you check w/ Calamity Jane or Rawe to see what their opinion is w/ regard to running delcmdsvc w/ the work we've done/info posted about
this machine?

Thanks

Make a restore point and run the fix. You should be fine.:bigthumb:
You can use system restore if anything goes wrong ;)

Little Eagle

I had a very detailed account of what occurred tonight - and then my machine
crapped out and booted - lost it all. :(

Basicly - I did the system restore point and Registry save. Ran Regseeker -
it cleaned out 1400 +/- bad entrys on the 1st couple of passes. Then number
went down - until there were 2 I just couldn't eliminate - I gave up after
10-11 trys.

Booted - chased desktop icons for pgms, start menu, control panel. Things
looked good.

Ran DelCmdSvc - runs very fast - could not read output from batch file and know what it did - didn't do.

When done, I booted again - cleaned out C:\Windows\Prefetch on the
chance that something residual was in there.

Booted.

Ran SpyBot - its clean - no more command service. :) :)

Ran Adaware, Ewido, Avast. They all came back clean. :)

****
I've noticed that I can't set the IE home page - no matter what I do - it
always comes up as about:blank - both in IE's settings, and in the URL window
when IE starts.

Found this item via Google on Microsoft support site.

http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;894269

It indicates the virus TrojanSpy:Win32/Banker is present on the system -
but none of the above (Avast etc) found it. Avast had virus def's updated
on Weds, as did Ewido. Scans using new defs on Thur 7-6.

Also found this ref:

http://www.softwarepatch.com/tips/about-blank-adware.html

It talks about CWShredder - Trendmicro - and since Trendmicro was referenced
in the before you post thread, I figured it was worth a try. CWSShredder indicates
the system is clean - so this would appear to be a "remnant" of a previous infection.

Tryed to update occurances in the registry manually. On 1st one, at key:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Start Page I got the error

Cannot edit start page: Error writing the values new contents.

The data type for "Start Page" is REG_SZ. I compared the contents and data type on
my system to infected system. My system has REG_SZ as data type, and "http://www.msn.com/
as the data value.

Looking back at the thread - you had me clean out a number of these types of
'URLS' w/ HJT.

Doing a scan w/ Trendmicro's house call - but will probally run a while. Will advise
w/ results.

Latest HJT log follows:

I must say I'm pretty happy right now - the bots and virus'es appear to be gone. If I
can get the about:blank cleaned up - things would be about perfect.

I trust its now safe to clean out virus/bot quarantines, etc?

Thanks

Hi

Scan from TrendMicro found nothing.

Close all Browser and Program Windows and have HijackThis fix the following.
Do this by checking the box beside each and then clicking on Fix checked.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Then you should be able to change the home page.

Looks like you may have had norton install instructions (http://basconotw.mvps.org/SymRem.htm) to remove it completly.

Removed the entries you indicated. Attempted to change home page setting in
IE properties - still no go. Booted. Attempted change - still no go.

Looked at Registry again - attempted change there - still locked out. Am wondering if there is some sort of "group policy" set - per one of my Windows books.

Attempted to run gpedit.msc - not found on this system. Did find that there are registry entries on my machine that are not in the machine I'm trying to fix. This could be part of the problem....stuff (keys) were deleted by some of the bots/viruse.

Owner of machine will have to live w/ it.... She also has Firefox - its home page value is ok.

Cleaned quarantined files out of Ewido, Spybot, etc, Defragged - created a "all done" restore point.

Going to call it good enough.

Many, many thanks for all the time you spent assisting me. I am considering your Friday suggestion. You and your associates are doing a valuable service.
