Hello Specba

Welcome to Safer Networking.

Please read Before You Post (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen. It is advisable that you back up your important data before starting any clean up procedure. Neither Safer Networking Forums nor the Analyst providing the advice may be held responsible for any loss.

You have posted for help twice in the past year , your posts where replied to and you never responded back. Why should I help you now ??????????

We have many people posting with infected computers seeking help, I really dont have the time to analyze your log, work up a fix and get no reply from you.

Let me know what you want to do?

1. You did not post a complete Hijackthis log
2. What problems are you having that makes you think its malware ?

First of all both times I posted you did help. The problem was solved. I did make a donation as a way of saying thanks, but that's no excuse for bad manners. I should have gotten back to you and thanked you for your help.

I teach CISCO in a local high school. People bring in machines for the students to fix. These machines often have malware and Spybot usually does the job.

When we tried to load Spybot on the machine it redirected the browser before it could reach Spybot's site. We were unable to load the program. This is one of those cases where a stand-alone version of Spybot might work.

Anyway, before I could get over to my students they had tried uninstalling the malware program. I used this as a "teaching moment" to explain why they should not have done that. I compared it to going to the doctor while being under medication that masks symptoms. It can make a full and proper diagnosis difficult, if not impossible.

The original complaint was that a malware program that kept popping up and asking for money. It was one of many that pretends to be a malware removal tool. If you were to look at the log file one of the registry keys refers to a program called superanti-spyware.

We have the option of wiping the hard drive and re-installing everything. Not bad from a teaching perspective, but I'm very uncomfortable doing that without a restore disk. I don't want to ever be accused of pirating software, even if it's a slightly different version of what was already on the machine.

I try to instill that concern with my students as well. Even in these days of wide-spread file sharing I do a whole unit on copyright to convince them not to share software. That issue isn't even mentioned in the CISCO curriculum.

Anyway, I'd be grateful for your help if you're willing to try to overlook my bad manners.

One more thing. I thought I had posted a complete Hijackthis log. I can try re-running it again on Monday when I'm back at school.

I'll see if I missed anything that might have caused me to get an incomplete log.

Hi,

Your HJT log stops at the 015 entry , there should be more entries up to 023s..

Do this. Drag HJT to the trash.

Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here (http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe) and save it to your desktop.
Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Hi,

I am not looking at any malware or viruses on this system. But it appears that this system is not running normally.

What I mean by that is this.

1. I see Mcafee installed but not running,
2. Java is out of date
3. Operating System is out of date
4. Internet Explorer is out of date

Not sure what you want to do here, do you need instructions to bring this computer up to snuff ???

Sorry for the late reply. Our midterm grades closed this week.

There was malware on the machine. The symptoms were popups requesting money for malware removal. Spybot could not install. It would get redirected when we attempted to download. Of course it is possible that the school firewall has be reset to not allow access to the website. I asked our IT people to allow access to Spybot and Avast!. They open the connection and somehow it magically closes again.

I'll bring the machine home and try to install Spybot here. The updates should be automatic. I promise I'll let you know how it turns out this time.

Thanks,

Specba

Lets run a rootkit detector

Please download RootRepeal from one of these locations and save it to your desktop
Here (http://ad13.geekstogo.com/RootRepeal.exe)
Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/rootrepeal/RootRepeal.exe)
Here (http://rootrepeal.psikotick.com/RootRepeal.exe)

Open http://billy-oneal.com/forums/rootRepeal/rootRepealDesktopIcon.png on your desktop.
Click the http://billy-oneal.com/forums/rootRepeal/reportTab.png tab.
Click the http://billy-oneal.com/forums/rootRepeal/btnScan.png button.
Check just these boxes:
http://forums.whatthetech.com/uploads/monthly_08_2009/post-75503-1250480183.gif
Push Ok
Check the box for your main system drive (Usually C:, and press Ok.
Allow RootRepeal to run a scan of your system. This may take some time.
Once the scan completes, push the http://billy-oneal.com/forums/rootRepeal/saveReport.png button. Save the log to your desktop, using a distinctive name, such as RootRepeal.txt. Include this report in your post.

I brought the machine home to get away from the school's firewall. Once I did Spybot was able to load. It ran and took care of the problem.

I was then able to update Windows. Some 250 patches and updates later the machine is up to service pack 3 and Explorer 8.

Do you still want me to complete the process in your last post? I haven't taken the machine back to school as of yet.

I did get a history of the machine. It came from a poor area. Dial up is all they had available, so nothing ever got updated.

Anyway thank you for your help.

This is really frustrating. I need to get our IT people to open up Spybot's site so we can install and run the program from school. My students are learning nothing, and I'm doing all the work.

Meanwhile I've now got another headache of a machine to fix. This one was able to load spybot and scan, but one piece of malware loads on startup and won't allow spybot to remove it. It finds other pieces of malware and removes those. What happens on startup is the Spybot startup scan runs, but never gets as far as asking if it can remove the problems it found. I get the spybot screen, but no problems are visable.

I checked in MSconfig and deactivated all the programs in startup. I then restarted the machine and the same thing happens. I reactivated the startup files and re-booted before creating the following log file using RSIT:

Is the new RSIT run from the second computer ?

Specba

It's one I got from following one of your links. I could try another one if you wish.

I misunderstood your question. Yes, the log file is from the second computer.

The first computer seems to be clean, but I can re-run the program and get you a log file from it if you wish.

Tomorrow I'll email our IT people to see if they can reopen downloads from safer-networking.org.

Thanks,

Specba

Good Morning,

The way the forum works is we just fix one computer per thread, what you will have to do is start a new topic for the second computer.

So I would run RSIT , start a new topic and paste the logs in, make sure you make note when posting that this is a different computer.

How did I get infected in the first place ?
Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.
Tutorial for System Restore (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial56.html) <-- Do this first to prevent yourself from being reinfected.
WhattheTech (http://forums.whatthetech.com/So_how_did_I_get_infected_in_the_first_place_t57817.html)

GeeksTo Go (http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/index.php?autocom=custom&page=How_did_I)
Dslreports (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10002)

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard, they will conflict with the TeaTimer in Spybot , you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer .

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.

Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.

Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.

IE-Spyad (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23332-order,1-page,1-c,antispywaretools/description.html)
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

Firefox 3 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Safe Surfn
