Hello.

I have the exact same problem as mentioned in this thread...

My Spybot shows the same two infections but cannot fix it because for some reason I don't have permission to modify the "hosts" file.

I have tried using Notepad as an Admin to update my hosts file along with several other methods of resetting it, but no luck.

I still can't get this pesky thing to let me update my "hosts" file and clear this little bugger.

All of my Google searches that I perform up in the Firefox toolbar area are redirected to Google.nl.

I also can no longer access Yahoo mail. I get this message in Firefox...

Sorry, the all-new Yahoo! Mail does not support your browser.
You can either download a compatible browser or proceed to Yahoo! Mail Classic.

Hi,

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds) or here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr) or here (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds).
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
DDS.txt
Attach.txt

Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

I followed your instructions here to the letter...

...including dragging and dropping your script into the ComboFix icon and it worked like a charm.

The one thing I had to do was completely uninstall Spybot S&D before this would work. It wouldn't work for the longest time because it kept telling me I didn't have permission to edit the "hosts" file, but it looks like it was just Spybot trying to do its job.

Infection is completely gone and I have reinstalled Spybot and McAfee.

Still, after it may had worked, that is certainly something that I wouldn't had liked to hear. Every malware removal process is a unique one. That means if user has a problem with malware s/he should create a new topic and to not follow instructions given for some totally different system.

In worst case something goes wrong and system ends up to a state of which helper may not be able to restore it.

We don't have these two topics stickied just for fun:

Yes, I understand. I'm the I.T. guy here at the office and had used ComboFix before.

This one was getting under my skin because I couldn't "beat" it.

Next time I will be more patient.

There's also other thing in running ComboFix. It may remove infection signs and that way leave helper out of clue -> cleaning process gets more difficult than it might had been before ComboFix run.

Anyway, hopefully readers of this topic take up the advice and don't run ComboFix without supervision and instructions to do so :)
