Virtumonde.sci infection

A day or two ago I my internet became inoperative, and the resident protection of my two virus scanners (Avast and Avira) was down. I ran Spybot and was given this report:

Virtumonde.sci: [SBI $BA5DD7C5] Browser helper object (Registry key, nothing done)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3}

Just one instance so far, and I didn't tell Spybot to "fix" it. I don't know if it matters at this point, but I've run system restore once since the infection.

Thank you very much for your reply, km2357. I do see how busy you all are, which makes your help that much more generous.

After much consideration I've decided antiquated XP software probably isn't worth your trouble or mine to save, and am seriously considering simply reformatting the hard drive using DBAN (and then installing Ubuntu). I know this isn't the kind of advice usually given here, but in your opinion, would that be an unwise solution?

I don't want to waste your time or forum space, so please just dismiss my question if I'm doing so. Thanks again.

Sometimes reformatting and reinstalling Windows (or installing another Operating System in its place) is the best/only solution. So what you're considering doing is not unwise and you can go ahead and do as you wish.
