Hi,
Cannot delete other windows users
Could you elaborate that a bit, please?
Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds) or here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr) or here (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds).
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
DDS.txt
Attach.txt
Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.
Download GMER (http://www.gmer.net) here by clicking download exe -button and then saving it your desktop:
Double-click .exe that you downloaded
Click rootkit-tab and then scan.
Don't check
Show All
box while scanning in progress!
When scanning is ready, click Copy.
This copies log to clipboard
Post log (attach as file if the log is long) in your reply.
Thanks for the reply. I haven't had a chance to perform the steps above yet as I haven't been home much.
As for the elaboration.... I have multiple users on the windoze pc. I am trying to delete two of the uses via the control panel. When I click on delete uses, it just hangs.
Ok. That user account issue may be related to those other symptoms. I may be able to tell more when you have provided the requested logs.
DDS

GMER - Just a note,
as it was scanning, the yellow triangle w/ ! popped up saying n9j2vpb3.exe is a corrupt file. It did continue scanning though.

Hi,
Let's do some scanning at this point.
Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html)
Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.
Read the requirements and privacy statement then click on the Accept button.
The program will launch and start to download the latest definition files.
You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
Click on Save Report As....
Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Save this report to a convenient place.
Copy and paste that information into your topic.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. As it scans your machine very deeply it could take hours to complete, Kaspersky suggests running it during a time of low activity.
If you need a tutorial, see here (http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj285/Bleeping/KAS/KAS9.gif)
:hair:
It's been 4.5 hours and only 28% complete. The good news, nothing found yet.
If hard drive is badly fragmented or antivirus software is running on background then scanning may take longer.
Well I had to stop the scan.
I defragged the HD, hopefully that will help. I'll start a new scan tonight.
Here's a thought. I could just as easily format and reinstall windows. Here's the question. My PC has the windoze product key on the side of the box. I don't have the disc that came with the PC. Could I use another copy of winXP (running on another PC) and just type the product key from the side of this PC, or is the product key tied to the CD? Does that make sense?
Product key is not tied to the CD. You just have to use correct XP edition which in this case is Home Edition.
Well, wiped the HD and reinstalled windoze and computer is still slower than molasses. My guess is a hardware issue. Any recommendations on a free scan for that?
Other than that, thanks for your assistance, greatly appreciated!
Hi,
Check hard drive for errors by following instructions here (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/kbtip.mspx). How much memory (RAM) does the system have installed?
Celeron 1.3
256MB RAM
I'll check out the link you sent.
That's minimum memory amount for Windows XP. 512 MB is recommended amount for smoother use.
Due to inactivity, this thread will now be closed.

At that point, if you still require help, please start a new topic and include a fresh HijackThis log and a link to your previous thread. Please do not add any logs that might have been requested in the closed topic, you would be starting fresh.
