Im having problems with my computer, I have Win XP and I can't run spyware, antivirus, Hijack this etc. I can't even get into my documents folder. When I go to My Computer then documents it closes down. I can see all the folders in my documents folder then they disappear and then a pop up comes up and says "to help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program. Then I click ok and another pops up and says "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

I can't run SpyBot, Adaware, AVG, Malewarebytes, etc.

I also see some funky little exe. programs running in my task manager but deleting them does nothing, removing them from start up does nothing.

Because of these issues I can't run anything to post a log like Hijack this, etc.

I appreciate any help anyone can provide.

Thanks.

Thanks so much for the reply and I did as you said, the only thing I did not see what the option to choose the C drive and also the scan took a matter of seconds but let me know if this report looks complete.

Thanks.

Hi,

Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii277/sUBs_/combofix/CF_download_FF.gif

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii277/sUBs_/combofix/CF_download_rename.gif

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/RC1.png

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/RC2-1.png

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Give me some time to look over your CF log, its quite extensive. In the meantime do this.

Download: DelDomains (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf) and save it to the desktop.

Close all open windows and your browser
Right Click DelDomains.inf and select > Install
Reboot your computer
Internet Explorer is needed to run this program properly.

Please download ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up
Please note: If you use online banking or are registered online with any other organizations, ensure you have memorized password and other personal information as removing cookies will temporarily disable the auto-login facility.

Please download Malwarebytes from Here (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php) or Here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html)

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
http://forums.whatthetech.com/post_a4255_MBAM.PNG
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Post the report and also a new HJT log please

Good Morning,

You need to enable windows to Show all Files and Folders
Instructions for your Operating System HERE (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html)

c:\windows\system32\SET3D.tmp <--Delete this file, let me know if it would not delete

These are how you most likely got infected, your downloading files from an unknown source. I cant tell you how many systems I have cleaned both on and off the forums from kids downloading music from Limewire. Not all but most file downloads may contain malicious software with it. Its like playing Russian Roulette Malwarewise . I strongly urge you to uninstall both these programs
c:\program files\LimeWire
c:\program files\uTorrent

This one is not malicious but it collects info from you as far your surfing, I would uninstall this one also
c:\program files\Ask.com

Registry Cleaners are not recommended, remove the wrong entries ( and they sometimes do ) and you can wind up with an inoperable computer, if it removes legit not needed entries you will see no difference in system performance. I would remove this one also.
Uniblue RegistryBooster 2009

How are things running now ????

Ok I did all that and I am able to run spyware again if I try but I still can't open my documents it displays the folders in the documents for a second then "to help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program" comes up and closes.

The path I take is I click on my computer then I try to click the "mike's documents" then that is when it won't work. But if I click my computer then C: drive, then documents and settings then mike then my documents, it lets me open all the folders in there UNLESS once I am inside my documents I change it to Thumbnail View then I get the error again and it closes down... very odd.

Uniblue RegistryBooster 2009 <-- Lets hope you didn't run this a few times and deleted the wrong entries.

Please run this free online virus scanner from ESET (http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner)

Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
Click Start
When asked, allow the activex control to install
Click Start
Make sure that the option Remove found threats is ticked, and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
Click Scan
Wait for the scan to finish
Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

What do I do after the scane before I click finish? check the box that says uninstall application on close and/or delete quaantined files or choose neither and just finish?

ken545
2009-12-09, 23:28
Everything it found was bad so you can delete all the Quarantine stuff. Your call to uninstall it you can always run it once in awhile if you wish.

You have XP, do you have a i386 folder on your C: Drive ?? Do you have your XP Windows CD ?

If you have either one or both, do this.

Depending on how your manufacturer set up your system, you may or may not need the Windows XP CD. If you have a I386 folder on your C:\ drive you may not need the disk.

Click Start>Run
Type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things.

DieselNY
2009-12-10, 01:10
Actually my laptop came with Visa and I downgraded to Win XP sp2 I think. I do not see an i386 folder in my C: drive. That being said I did as you suggested and then inserted the XP disc I have and it checked to see if the necessary files are installed already and then like 20 min later it finished but not idea if it installed anything.

I rebooted and the one thing that still confuses me is the documents crashing issue.

ken545

With the file checker you wont see anything it has done but if there where corrupted windows files it would have replaced them off of the CD

Now to remove most of the tools that we have used in fixing your machine:
Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
Download OTC (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTC.exe) to your desktop and run it
A list of tool components used in the cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OTC to reach the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
Click Yes to begin the cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Why dont you post here on our sister site for help as we just do malware removal on this forum

Let them know you posted here and where infected and that we cleaned you up
