I,m new to the forum so please bare with me,

Can anyone tell me what running bot-check is when doing a scan,

I am getting numbers and web pages (on bottom left of screen) .

Does that mean that those web sites have been viewed on this pc, because i don,t recognize them, If the answer is yes, can i stop them been shown when doing a scan.

Sorry if it isn,t as clear as some other posts.

During the running of a Spybot scan ("Check for problems") the status bar in the lower left hand corner of the screen shows the following:
"Running bot-check(xxxxx/yyyyy:zzzzzz)" where:
xxxxx = Current check count.
yyyyy = Total check count.
zzzzz = Malware being checked for.

The zzzzz value is not what is on your system it is the malware that is being scan for.

hockeymon99:

The "Running bot-check(xxxxx/yyyyy:zzzzzz)" that appears in lower left hand corner of the screen during a scan is just a display of progress of the scan. If you don't understand it, ignore it.

The only thing that you should be concerned with is the results of the scan that are displayed in the "Problem" list in the right hand pane of the "Search & Destroy" screen when the scan completes.

It is just what Spybot is checking for, so don't worry about it :)

I am perplexed as to why the number of malware signatures or bots that spybot
scans my system for has reduced from over 1M+ to 780609 surely there are a lot more threats than this now.

My best guess in my knowledge, is the malware definitions are being compressed (presuming it will save space and make the program run more efficiently).

For example, in 2007 there might be Malware A. Spybot incorporates that definition into its definition database. Now in 2011 there are several variants (versions) of Malware A. So instead of searching through:
-Malware A-v.1.2
-Malware A-v3.1
-Malware A v.0202
etc...

All the definitions for those variants are compressed into one general category: Malware A.

Hope that helps?

Ok, so what happens if xxxxx is greater than yyyyy...? Does it mean overscanning or it failed to scan correctly? But still resumes without giving any errors?

I haven't had Spybot 1.6.2 for a few years now, so I can't confirm for sure, but I believe when the current check count(xxxxx) is higher than the Total Check Count(yyyyy) it's usually because Spybot has been set to check the downloads directory, or perhaps it does it automatically now, I can't quite remember. I am uncertain if it says it for sure or if it is just in Spybot 2.5, but you could probably confirm it in your next scan if the zzzzz value says "Checking downloads directory." or similar. :)

Ah yes, mine says something similar...been scanning for the pass month and a half actually(and it's still going...)....and when I saw the counter go over the total, I thought doesn't look right.....

Just to clarify, has the one scan been ongoing for a month and a half and is still ongoing and has not completed yet? I know that is unlikely, but I do want to check with you to be sure. :)

Well, let me surprise you; it has been going on since Feb.... --actually 31st of Jan or somewhere around there when I got my PSU replacement.

Anyways, is this not to be expected if you have large amounts of files and folders to scan through with it scanning additional stuff like download directories, no? At first I thought, it shouldn't take more than a day because all my other scanners took at most a few hours, the longest being SUPERAntiSpyware's scanner(which was the said few hrs); but this seems to take the cake - a whopping one and a half months and still going! So then I just reasoned it with, well it's probably got lots of files to go through and it's taking its sweet time thoroughly scanning each individual file, I would guess - to ensure that I am free of malware at least according to them.

If the scan isn't *suppose* to take this long, even if you have terabytes and terabytes of files and folders to go through and idk, maybe billions of files to boot - just as an example, then the scanner has crashed silently without popping up any sort of error stating so? I did check it from time to time and the XXXXX was going up, so thought it was working fine......until I found out the XXXX value is greater than YYYYY and yeah here I am....hahaha

...or how long is it suppose to go regardless of how many files you have to scan through, even with download directories checked which points to all drives your computer has?

There's no set amount of time that the scan should take, and I suppose it does depend on how many things there are to scan , but a month long scan seems a bit extreme. There were some people in the past where Spybot would hang and/or freeze when it got to the "Please wait scanning download directories" point in the scan. Here are a few of those threads on the forums:
https://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?30700-please-wait-while-scanning-download-directories
https://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?71363-What-is-quot-Please-wait-scanning-download-directories-quot-Super-slow-program-crash
https://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?70439-Spybot-S-amp-D-hangs-on-download-directories
https://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?69155-SPYBOT-freezes

The other day your numbers were Running bot-check (863051/858326: Please wait scanning download directories.) When you look at the scan again now has the first number progressed currently? i.e Do you get a higher current check count such as Running bot-check (864038/858326: Please wait scanning download directories) when you look at the numbers now? :)

Okay, thanks. :) It went up a few digits, so it looks like it isn't currently frozen. However, the scan is progressing very slowly. It would probably take the scan longer if there are terabytes and terabytes of files/folders, however I have never had anyone post where a scan took a month or more and I'm unsure if that is to be expected or not. Therefore, I suggest opening a technical support ticket. Here's the link to open a ticket, you'll want to click the technical support button:
https://www.safer-networking.org/support/ticket/
You could post a link to this thread in your support ticket along with the details of the slower scan if you like, and also you might like to include links to some of your other Spybot forum posts in case they are relevant, the more info provided the better, usually. :)

Yup, that is still quite a long time. Did you open the support ticket? Glad the scan finished. :)

I did and this is what they said:

Hello Nnewb .,

A System Scan should take about 30 mins or more depending on the size and amount of files.

If you have terabytes of data it could take a number of hours to complete.

Please download and install Spybot 2.4 using the link below:
https://www.safer-networking.org/spybot2allocator.php

And I replied with:

Hi Rob,

Ok so it *could* take a number of hours to complete, is that number of hours include up to 744 and beyond?

Nnewb

And haven't heard back from them since....

I've never had to open a support ticket yet, so I'm not sure how long it takes between replies, but I would imagine they have a lot of tickets so another reply might take a while. :)

They included a link to download 2.4 and that probably would be a faster scan.

If you do stay with Spybot 1.6.2, there are some things listed here to do if the scan freezes. Even though yours isn''t freezing but is just really slow it probably wouldn't hurt if you tried some of them the next time you scan:
https://www.safer-networking.org/faq/what-can-i-do-if-spybot-sd-freezes-during-scan/
Also, you could set up different types of scans. I'll borrow the instructions from the page above:

Please run Spybot-S&D and switch to “Advanced mode” via the menu bar item “Mode”. Now select “Settings” –> “File Sets” in the navigation bar on the left.
Now, if I remember correctly and have sent you to the right place, you should be able to rightclick somewhere in the Spybot window and select different types of scans, such as Spyware scan only, or Minimal scan, etc. A minimal scan wouldn't be as thorough a scan, but it should be faster, and would be worth trying, though you wouldn't want to do that permanently.
