I have recently experienced several infections/problems with my computer. I had inadverdently downloaded spyware and was having problems with being redirected/timed out from Google and Yahoo search engines. I tried doing some things myself, including use of Stopzilla (which did nothing and was uninstalled) and Malewarebytes. Then, my computer started running super slow and was continuously freezing up. A co-worker came out to my house to help me and did get my computer running faster under my user account. I believe he used somethig called "CCleaner" and also introduced me to Spybot. While he cleaned up several infections, I'm still having two huge problems:
1. I'm still getting redirected with many, but not all, Google searches
2. My husband tried to log on under his account and the speed/freezing up issues were still present. The same is true for my son's account.

This is the Hijack This log:

Hi,

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds) or here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr) or here (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds).
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
DDS.txt
Attach.txt

Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

Download GMER (http://www.gmer.net) here by clicking download exe -button and then saving it your desktop:
Double-click .exe that you downloaded
Click rootkit-tab and then scan.
Don't check
Show All
box while scanning in progress!
When scanning is ready, click Copy.
This copies log to clipboard
Post log in your reply.

==== End Of File ===========================

I downloaded GMER and tried to do a scan... twice. Both times, a blue screen popped up and said that Windows had detected a problem and shut down to avoid causing harm to my computer.

The technical info at the bottom said:
***Stop: 0x00000008E (OxC0000005, OxA4101782, Ox9B71CB2C, Ox00000000)
***mfehidk.sys - Address A4101782 base at A40F3000, Datesta,p 4a73694C

Any help you can provide would be MOST appreciated! I know I'm in over me head!!!

Hi,

De-select devices and sections in GMER options and see if you can run the scan successfully after that :)

Hi!

I de-selected "devices" and "sections" as instructed and the scan went further without Windows shutting me down.

During the first re-attempt at scanning, I walked away from my computer when I realized it would take awhile... When I returned, my computer was frozen up. I could see my desktop's wallpaper, but all icons were missing and there was no mouse arrow.

I re-booted my computer and tried again - the same thing happened.

The third time, I sat and watched it. When it looked like it was finished scanning, I tried to copy. My computer started freezing up and would not open any application to which I could copy the text. I tried clicking on different things and my computer was either excessively slow or it did not respond at all. Next thing I know, I get the blue window again, saying that Windows had shut down to prevent damage to my computer. It also said, "A process or thread crucial to system operation has unexpectedly excited or been terminated."

Because I was watching the information bar during the 3rd scanning attempt, I know what it scanned prior to finishing up. Should I try scanning again, stopping it before it gets to that point & try to copy all that's there up to that point?

This is SOOO frustrating! I sure appreciate your help!

Hi,

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully first.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New dds log.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Hey, there!

My co-worker friend is coming over tomorrow to help me. Since he's got WAY more computer know-how than me, I'll wait unitl tomorrow to follow through on this. Thanks again!

Ok, but please don't try anything not included in my instructions. That way things can be kept under control :)

My friend couldn't make it to help me out, so I tried doing the ComboFix thing on my own...

I read the guide, downloaded ComboFix and got as far as installing the Windows Recovery Console, (remembering to disable McAfee and my Windows firewall first). The blue box "Autoscan" window came up and said that it was scanning for infected files. About a minute into it, my screen turned blue and it said that Windows was shutting down to avoid damage to my computer.

Now what???

Please reboot and see if ComboFix still continues from there. If c:\ComboFix.txt file doesn't get generated run ComboFix again.

I don't know how or why, but the Combo Fix must have taken care of whatever was causing the search engine redirect issues! I tried some of the searches that were redirecting last week and all links went to the proper place without hesitation. I also checked the accounts for my husband and son and they're back to normal as well.

THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH for your help! ...I learned quite a bit through this experience and am very appreciative of your time and support. THANKS AGAIN!!!

That's good to hear but I'd still like to see those logs asked for earlier :)

That way we can make sure there're no other bad things lurking somewhere anymore.
