My laptop is infected. When I click on a link in google I am taken to a different website. I have run my ZA anti-virus/anti-spyware. Also, have run AdAware, Malwarebytes, Spybot, Superantispyware, Windows Defender, Pcpitstop utilities, and other online scanners. Some "trojans" were found and quarantined. It also seems that my browsers have lost some of their coloring. My taskbar is white as well as the side borders. I also turned off my system restore a few days ago, sorry about that. I was advised it was necessary when removing infections. I installed and ran Erunt. I already had HJT in my programs, so it's not on my desktop. Not sure if that's a problem. Hopefully I remembered all the advice that was suggested I do before posting. Thanks in advance. :thanks:

Here is the HJT log:

Hi aztony

Download gmer.zip (http://gmer.net/gmer.zip) and save to your desktop.
alternate download site (http://hype.free.googlepages.com/gmer.zip)

Unzip/extract the file to its own folder. (Click here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial105.html) for information on how to do this if not sure. Win 2000 users click here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial106.html).
When you have done this, disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
There is a small chance this application may crash your computer so save any work you have open.
Double-click on Gmer.exe to start the program.
Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan...click NO.
Run Gmer again and click on the Rootkit tab.
Look at the right hand side (under Files) and uncheck all drives with the exception of your C drive.
Make sure all other boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for "Show All".
Click on the "Scan" and wait for the scan to finish.
Note: Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan.
When completed, click on the Copy button and right-click on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and right-click again and choose Paste or Ctrl+V. Save the file as gmer.txt and copy the information in your next reply.
Note: If you have any problems, try running GMER in SAFE MODE (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial61.html)"
Important! Please do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan..

I just wanted to mention that Combfix warned me that my zonealarm scanner and AdAware live scanner was still active. I tried to disable them but was unable to figure out how. I went into Task Manager but could not find any processes for these programs. Combofix kept running even when I did not hit the OK button but hit the X to try and close it.

Delete this:

C:\Windows\temp\dqvc.tmp

Empty Recycle Bin.

Do you have any issues left?

I am still being redirected to other websites when I click on a link in google or any other search. Doesn't matter if I'm using IE or Firefox.

Then we need further research.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1 (http://malwarebytes.gt500.org/mbam-setup.exe)
alternate download link 2 (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html)
Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam/database/mbam-rules.exe) and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
Then click on the Scan button.

If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

I already had Malwarebytes installed. Not to my desktop, so I hope that doesn't matter.

I have attached a screenshot of the list of viruses/trojans that are quarantined by my anti-virus program. All of them are less then a month old. There are a couple more at the top of the list that wouldn't fit in the window. Should I delete them?

Shaba
2010-01-04, 14:36
Yes they should be deleted and because of downloader, infected computer should be kept offline. Can you transfer tools etc. via usb stick?

aztony
2010-01-04, 21:36
I've deleted the files quarantined by my a/v program. Sorry but I do not have a usb stick. Is there another way? Since the problem is with my laptop, I do have a desktop pc that I can use. If it is necessary, I can go buy a USB stick.

aztony

I wanted to add some additional information. I'm not sure it has any bearing on the problems I'm having with the infections. When I boot up I will get a message box saying that either WMIServ App or eRecovery has stop working and was closed.

Shaba
2010-01-05, 06:44
So you don't get anymore redirects?

aztony
2010-01-05, 09:30
Yes I am still getting redirected and/or another popup window. I have the laptop offline as you suggested. I also scanned it with AdAware, Spybot, Superantispyware, and ZA. The only thing they found was some adware cookies that I had to reboot in order to have them removed.

ATENTION ATTENTION: VirusTotal is a free service offered by Hispasec Sistemas. There are no guarantees about the availability and continuity of this service. Although the detection rate afforded by the use of multiple antivirus engines is far superior to that offered by just one product, these results DO NOT guarantee the harmlessness of a file. Currently, there is not any solution that offers a 100% effectiveness rate for detecting viruses and malware.

I did a search of the files on my laptop for atapi. I attached a screenshot of the search results. I also scanned the files with ZA, Malwarebytes, and AdAware. Nothing malicious was found.

I have the disc that came with my laptop. It's the Vista Anytime Upgrade disc. I do have an XP Pro upgrade disc. That is the only windows cd I have.

I did want to mention that I went through the allowed programs list in my ZA Security Suite and I found some that were suspect. I chose the option to "kill" some of them. I killed the ones that were dated from when I started to have problems Nov & Dec. I'll list what they are:

amsgu.exe - killed
fkJUjWFwogmriTlryxoX (extension unknown)
nbhfy.exe - killed
nmjhv.exe - killed
is-HPUNN.tmp
inst.exe - killed

Upgrade discs won't unfortunately help here.

You will need a full version media. Are you able to borrow one?

I am trying to borrow one.
I was going through the manual for my laptop and did find out that it has a recovery partition that would return it to it's original condition.

Wanted to let you know that I'm still trying to get hold of a Windows disc. I do have a question. Does it matter which version of Windows I use? I have Vista on my laptop.

Shaba

Yes it matters.

It has to be Vista media with same service pack as you have.
