View Full Version : Computer Internet connection lost after about 12 hours

mmsc82
2009-12-29, 17:21
I am fairly confident I must have a virus or malware program on my computer, causing it to consistently lose its internet connection about 12 hours or so after rebooting. This has happened for at least 2 1/2 months. This forum helped me greatly in the past with a virus removal and i am hoping that I will be able to get the same help again with this issue!

I no longer have Spybot Search and Destroy installed on my computer (removed it awhile back as it was not working) so i did not have to disable teatimer.

I backed up my registry using ERUNT

Thank you.

We can get a closer look with this:

Please download DDS (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr) and save it to your desktop.

Double click dds.scr to run the tool. When done, DDS.txt will open.

Save both reports to your desktop.

Copy/paste both logs in your reply.

Thank you-here are the logs. I also wanted to mention, when my computer starts up, i get about 10-15 security notifications from comodo firewall about programs that are potentially unsafe. I have to disable these programs in order for my computer to run. If i allow the programs, then my computer stalls in about 2 minutes. So i figure one of them is the virus and perhaps the others are fine.

ok thanks for the info. Looks like you have two firewalls enabled, both Comodo and Mcafee. Two isnt better in this case. You should disable one of them. Looks ok as far as malware goes. Disable a firewall, reboot machine and see if anything improves. As for the comodo prompts i cant really say good or bad with out knowing what they are.

I'll try it but I don't see how that could be causing my system to stall, either right away (if i allow all the programs) or after an extended period of time. Will let you know.

mmsc82

Ok i have disabled the McAffee firewall ( i wanted to disable the comodo one but couldn't figure out how to do it).

Actually so far the system boots up much more smoothly. I didn't get any Comodo Firewall popups! So maybe it was just the two firewalls fighting with eachother?

I will be in touch to let you know if my computer continues to have the internet connection lost after several hours.

yes. Two software firewalls will only lead to problems.

You could probably find this info at the comodo web site or in the documentation somewhere.

It has now been a few days and I have not had any more problems! Thank you so much for the solution, if only I had known that was the source this whole while..

Thank you!

ok your welcome. Some tips to help you remain malware free:

10 Tips for Reducing/Preventing Your Risk To Malware:

1) It is essential to keep your OS (http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us),(Windows) browser (IE, FireFox) and other software up to date to "patch" vulnerabilities that could be exploited. Visit Windows Update frequently or use the auto-update feature. Staying updated is also necessary for web based applications like Java, Adobe Flash/Reader, QuickTime etc. Check there version status here. (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/)

2) Know what you are installing to your computer. Alot of software can come bundled with unwanted add-ons, like adware, toolbars and malware. Do not install any files from ads, popups or random links. Do not fall for fake warnings about virus and trojans being found on your computer and your then prompted to install software to remedy this. See also the signs (http://www.virusvault.us/signs1.html)that you may have malware on your computer.

3) Install and keep updated: one antivirus and two or three anti-malware applications. If not updated they will soon be worthless. If these are constantly finding malware then you should review your computer habits.

4) Refrain from clicking on links or attachments via E-Mail, IM, IRC, Chat Rooms, Blogs or Social Networking Sites, no matter how tempting or legitimate the message may seem. Even if you get a E-Mail from someone you know, its possible that there computer or account information has been compromised.

5) Don't click on ads/pop ups or offers from websites requesting that you need to install software, media players or codecs to your computer--for any reason.

6) Don't click on offers to "scan" your computer. Install ActiveX Objects with care. Do you trust the website?

7) Set up and use limited (non-privileged) accounts for everyday use, rather than administrator accounts. Limited accounts (http://www.microsoft.com/protect/computer/advanced/useraccount.mspx) can help prevent *malware from installing and lessen its potential impact.*

8) Install and understand the *limitations* of a software firewall.

9) A tool (http://nsslabs.com/general/ie8-hardening-tool.html)for automatically hardening and securing Internet Explorer 8.0. Requires site registration for downloading. Changes some of the default settings of IE 8.0, Read the FAQ's.

10) Warez, cracks etc are very popular for carrying all kinds of malware payloads. Using them will cause you all kinds of problems. If you download/install files via p2p (http://www.virusvault.us/p2p.html) networks, then you are also much more likely to encounter malicious code in a downloaded file. Do you really trust the source of the file? Do you really need another malware source?
