My little brother brought me his laptop. It has Personal Security running and keeps telling me it's infected with pretty much everything. He has installed Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware in trying to fix it (without success). He also has an expired version of Norton Protection Center installed. I have tried to install/run ERUNT and install HJT. I have copied both to the desktop (can't see anything on the desktop, but I can browse to the folder). I run ERUNT, click allow, and nothing appears to happen. I run HJT, click continue, and it gives me a message box saying the program might not have installed correctly. Same behavior for both when run as administrator.
I'm not sure where to go from here.
Hello acccutting
Welcome to Safer Networking.
Please read Before You Post (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen. It is advisable that you back up your important data before starting any clean up procedure. Neither Safer Networking Forums nor the Analyst providing the advice may be held responsible for any loss.

FYI, I do not have this laptop connected to my network, so when you indicate that i should download something to my desktop, please know that I will be saving said file to USB key and copying it over. I also am not able to see/access anything on the desktop, so am browsing to and working in the desktop folder.
All that aside, I cannot get RootRepeal to run. It behaves the same as HijackThis and ERUNT, I double click it, User Account Contral asks for permission to proceed, I click allow, and then nothing happens. Same results when run as administrator.
Try to run Combofix, copy it to your USB drive and then transfer it to the infected computer, try running it in safemode
To Enter Safemode
Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode with Networking
Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial61.html)
Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.
Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/RC1.png
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/RC2-1.png
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.
*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

I got into safe mode, copied/renamed combo-fix, and ran it. somewhere along the way, the computer restarted. it had gotten past the stage## part, had scanned some files, and was deleting some folders. It did not try to install the MS recovery console. It did not appear to finish, just restarted all of a sudden. What should I do?
C:\ComboFix.txt <--The log should be in here, copy and paste in for me to see.

Hi,
Great, now you should be able to run Malwarebytes and in the meantime I need to look over your Combofix log to see if anything else needs to go.
Please download ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) by Atribune to your desktop.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up
Please note: If you use online banking or are registered online with any other organizations, ensure you have memorized password and other personal information as removing cookies will temporarily disable the auto-login facility.
Please download Malwarebytes from Here (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php) or Here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html)
Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
http://forums.whatthetech.com/post_a4255_MBAM.PNG
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Post the report and also a new HJT log please

ESETSmartInstaller@High as CAB hook log:

much, much better.
His norton install has expired. I plan to uninstall it and maybe Microsoft Security Essentials. Could you recommend antivirus, antimalware, etc software (preferrably free so that he'll keep them up to date) to help keep this from happening again. although, with him, he may go overboard and never use the internet again:)
Hi ,
I have heard good things about Security Essentials , go ahead and install it.
http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/
BUT, Symantec needs to be uninstalled first , after you do the uninstall, run this tool to make sure it got all of it.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
Then post a new HJT log and lets see if its gone.
Now to remove most of the tools that we have used in fixing your machine:
Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
Download OTC (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTC.exe) to your desktop and run it
A list of tool components used in the cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OTC to reach the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
Click Yes to begin the cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Go back to my original reply and download and run RootRepeal and post the log.
Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
DDS.com (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds)
DDS.scr (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr)
DDS.pif (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds)
Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
Notepad will open with the results, click no to the Optional_Scan
Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.
Information on A/V control Here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)

MarketResearch <--Is this a program that you installed and use ?
No, it isn't.
Tell me exactly what sites your being redirected to.
I'm not certain it's being redirecte. I will clarify. When you click on the tab bar to make a new tab (or ctl-T) it goes to:
http://tab.fastbrowsersearch.com/?v=19&tid=%7bDF804678-0790-4d34-A07A-9FE3C4DEE83B%7d
It used to go to a page that showed recently visited websites, allowed starting inprivate sessions, and showed recently closed tabs. if possible, i would like that back. in internet options, in the settings for tabs, "open the new tab page" is chosen for "when a new tab is opened, open". fastbrowsersearch was also the browser search. I used to not be able to change it, but something you've done has allowed me to change and remove it from the list of choices. I was also not able to add more search providers, but now can.
Post a new HJT log please

My bad,
Do like this , just ignore the download part
Please download OTM (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTM.exe) by OldTimer.
Save it to your desktop.
Please click OTM and then click >> run.
Copy the lines inside the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
:Processes
explorer.exe
:Services
:Reg
:Files
C:\Program Files\MarketResearch
:Commands
[purity]
[emptytemp]
[start explorer]
[Reboot]
Return to OTM, right click in the "Paste Instructions for items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
Click the red Moveit! button.
Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
Close OTM
Note: If an item cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Drag Combofix to the trash and download a fresh copy and run it please.
Download ComboFix from one of these locations:
Good Morning,
If you ran Combofix already thats fine, it wont hurt anything but be sure to post the log please.
Open up Internet Explorer and and up on the right top click on the the tab that opens the search and select MANAGE SEARCH PROVIDERS and remove Fast Web Search and any others you don't want.
Let me know if this helps

i removed the search provider fast web search and restarted. when i click to create a new tab (or use ctrl-t) it still goes to http://tab.fastbrowsersearch.com/?v=19&tid=%7bDF804678-0790-4d34-A07A-9FE3C4DEE83B%7d
FYI, if i right click a link and choose open in new tab, it works correctly. the only time i'm seeing an issue is when i click the small tab in the browser tabs to make a new tab or i use ctrl-t to open a new tab.
I searched and found these instructions for setting the "new tab page" back to default. Would you be able to verify if this is correct/safe? I checked my registry and it does have fastbrowser junk at the registry location called out.
Kundan555 has posted an answer to the question “How do I remove “Fast Browser Search”?”:
PLEASE FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS AND RESOLVE THE ISSUE FOR IE8 AND IE7.
=================================================================
Please uninstall fast browser from the program and features in vista and, add and remove program in XP. Then
To fix the new tab issue you need to be comfortable using regedit. Run regedit and navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AboutURLs
under Tabs, clear the fastwebsearch junk and input the following as value data:
res://ieframe.dll/tabswelcome.htm or any entry related with fastbrowser listed over there.
close and restart IE.
Try this first.
Open IE and go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced Tab and click on Reset Internet Explorer Setting ....Reset...it will take a few seconds, close IE and then reopen it and see if it helped.
Before you try that fix you posted, back up your registry with Erunt, this way if there is a problem you can restore it. Just try removing anything related to Fast Browser Search.
Make sure this is present, if not add it
res://ieframe.dll/tabswelcome.htm
Backup Your Registry with ERUNT:
Download erunt.zip to your Desktop from here:
http://aumha.org/downloads/erunt.zip
Right-click erunt.zip, select Extract All... and follow the prompts to extract ERUNT to a new folder on your Desktop
Inside the new folder, double-click ERUNT.exe to start the program
OK all the prompts to back up your registry to the default location.Note: to restore your registry, go to the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe
By the way, you got this Fast Browser Search from downloading My Tattoo on Facebook

Resetting IE settings didn't do it. Backed up registry with erunt. Replaced the fastbrowsersearch info with res://ieframe.dll/tabswelcome.htm in registry. Restarted and it goes to the windows "what do you want to do next" page!!
Yes, I remember earlier seeing some references to My Tatoo in one of the fixes.
Browse to the page you want to use as your homepage and then go to Tools> Internet Options and Use Current...ok your way out

Yes. Seems to be working great.
Great,
Now to remove most of the tools that we have used in fixing your machine:
Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
Download OTC (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTC.exe) to your desktop and run it
A list of tool components used in the cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OTC to reach the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
Click Yes to begin the cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
How did I get infected in the first place ?
Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.
Tutorial for System Restore (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial56.html) <-- Do this first to prevent yourself from being reinfected.

GeeksTo Go (http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/index.php?autocom=custom&page=How_did_I)
Dslreports (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10002)
Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard, they will conflict with the TeaTimer in Spybot , you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer .
Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community
Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.
Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.
Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.
IE-Spyad (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23332-order,1-page,1-c,antispywaretools/description.html)
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
Firefox 3 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
