Have a laptop with Vista Home Premium installed that may be infected. It hangs on bootup after password screen, I have had to boot into Safe Mode several times and do a system restore to get back into normal mode.

Also have noticed the Folder pane in Windows Explorer is gone when it acts up, comes back after doing a restore and booting normally. When I first ran Kaspersky online scan and tried to save the report file it said it was saved but I could not locate the file even after several tries of saving it to different locations and Hijackthis logs also have disappeared after saving.

Kaspersky online scanner found Exploit.JS.Agent.anr in temp internet files.

McAfee was installed and had been disabled and I had trouble keeping it On. Removed it and installed Kaspersky free trial and Spybot S&D. Kaspersky removed Exploit.JS.Agent.anr and S&D found some old remnants of MalwareCrush in the registry that it seems to have removed.

Have just turned Windows automatic updates off because it seem to be trying to update when I was trying solve the problem.

Dell Inspiron 1501
2GB RAM
32 bit OS

Hi,

Hjt log looks ok. Anyway, let's take a look at more detailed information for just in case.

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds) or here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr) or here (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds).
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
DDS.txt
Attach.txt

Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

Hi,

Uninstall old Adobe Reader versions and get the latest one (9.3) here (http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=10&platform=Windows) or get Foxit Reader here (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader_2/down_reader.htm). Make sure you don't install toolbar if choose Foxit Reader! You may also check free readers introduced here (http://pdfreaders.org/).

Check here (http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/) to see if your Flash is up-to-date (do it separately with each of your browsers). If not, uninstall vulnerable versions by following instructions here (http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html). Fresh version can be obtained here (http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/).

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

Updating Java:

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 17 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).
Click the
Download
button to the right.
Select Windows on platform combobox and check the box that says:
Accept License Agreement. Click continue.

The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u17-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version. Uncheck Carbonite online backup trial if it's offered there.

Have you defragged hard drive lately?

Blade81,

I have updated the Adobe reader to 9.3 and the flash to the latest version and it checks out in both browsers.

I downloaded the Java, latest ver. 18 and uninstalled the older version.

On the reboot the computer did not come back normally. I entered the password and after about 20 min. I aborted the boot and booted into Safe mode. When it finished booting into Safe mode I immediately did a restart and it booted normally, about 2-3 min. after password was entered.

I then installed the latest Java and that went OK.

The defrag is set to run the first of the month and it said that it ran 1Jan2010. I have started another defrag and it is running now.

Thanks

Tom

Blade81,

The problem of the computer hanging after the password is entered at bootup has returned.

It seem to be doing OK after I installed the new versions of Adobe Reader, Flash and Java. The defrag of the hard drive finished fine.

Later that day I shut the computer off and when I next tried to boot, it hangs on bootup, have booted into Safe Mode several times and done virus scans (Kaspersky & ESET online) which turn up nothing.

Did a restore from Safe Mode back to the install of Java on 16Jan and it still would not boot normally.

Just ran Spybot S&D in Safe Mode and it found nothing.

Ran HiJackThis and the log file is below.

Thanks for all your help, I really don't know were to go from here.

Tom

Hi,

You might want to run uninstaller for McAfee (http://majorgeeks.com/McAfee_Consumer_Product_Removal_Tool_d5420.html) and AVG (http://download.avg.com/filedir/util/avg_arm_sup_____.dir/avgremover.exe) to make sure there're no remnants causing the issue.

I didn't see any malware there so hanging may be a general issue too.

Blade81,

I believe I got rid of the McAfee and AVG remnants.

I had downloaded Vista SP2 and have it on a CD if the problem is a corrupt file do you think it would help correct the problem if I installed it now or should I wait.

Also do you recommend any registry cleaner programs that might help.

Thanks again

Tom

Hi,

Yes, if corrupt OS file is causing the issue then SP2 might help.

I don't recommend any registry cleaner. Those don't give much advantage while can cause bad damage if wrong entry is swept.

Blade81,

The machine seems to be running very smoothly now.

I think the main reason for most of the problems was a corrupt driver, although I believe there were some remnants of past malaware on the system that showed up in early scans.

I downloaded the Dell W-Lan driver and also the graphics driver and the problem seem to disappear. I believe it was the W-Lan driver that was hanging on boot.

After it was running OK I installed Malwarebytes and it found infected registry keys pertaining to MyWebSearch and WinAntiVirus and deleted them.

You can close this thread and thanks again for all your help.

Regards

Tom
