Hello and welcome to Safer Networking.

My name is km2357 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

If for any reason you do not understand an instruction or are just unsure then please do not guess, simply post back with your questions/concerns and we will go through it again.

Please do not start another thread or topic, I will assist you at this thread until we solve your problems.

Lastly the fix may take several attempts and my replies may take some time but I will stick with it if you do the same.

Sorry for the delay in replying, the forum is very busy. If you still need help, please post a fresh HiJackThis Log

The two web sites mentioned

static.snapfish.com/KPMNDTMML.../1198212507692

webkinz.com/assets/images/blank.gif
... are both ones they use.

I'm experiencing a problem I can't diagnose... and I can't tell if it's related to the virus cleaning problem. After ComboFix, the internet functioned correctly and there were no more problems... I posted all the post ComboFix logs from that computer. However, after a reboot, I can no longer get to the internet. I'm using a 2WIRE combination DSL modem and router. My computer connects to it wireless and I have a physical cable connecting the computer we're fixing. For some reason the router is completely ignoring the computer. When I log into the router, the interface doesn't even show the computer is plugged in - even though the connection lights are on and network activity shows up. I have disabled and reinabled the connection, I have uninstalled the ethernet card and then rebooted so it will reinstall... all to no avail. THOTS??

I have followed your other instructions - and did an additional step. Zone Alarm was causing major problems on the machine - tying up tons of processor time and majorily slowing everything down. I uninstalled it tonight hoping that would bring back the internet. I'm planning to load other antivirus and firewall software on the computer so they have less invasive protection.

Requested log follows in the next post.

Did you make sure the physical cable was fully pushed into the router and the computer? A connection at one end of the cable may have been loose. If you have another cable lying around you can try that, to see if the original cable is faulty.

You can try having Windows XP repair the network connection itself:

Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

In the Control Panel, under Pick a Category, click Network and Internet Connections. (If you are in Classic View, just pick Network and Sharing Center)

Finally, Right-click your network connection, and then click Repair. Let me know if that fixes it.

You can also try phyically resetting the router. If you don't know how to do that, let me know and I'll find the steps for you.

Finally if none of the above steps work, I'd like for you (on the infected computer) to click on Start and then Run and then type in cmd in the Run box and hit enter. In the new window that opens, type in ipconfig /all and let me know what it says on the screen.

I have followed your other instructions - and did an additional step. Zone Alarm was causing major problems on the machine - tying up tons of processor time and majorily slowing everything down. When you uninstalled Zone Alarm, did you notice any change in the status of the Internet?

If you haven't already replaced ZA, here are a few choices for a free AV and free Firewall to replace Zone Alarm:

For the free Anti-Virus:

1)Antivir PersonalEdition Classic (http://www.free-av.com/)
2)avast! 4 Home Edition (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html)

Download and install only one!

For the free Firewall:

Jetico Personal Firewall (http://www.jetico.com/jpf2.htm)
Soft perfect (http://www.softperfect.com/products/firewall/)
Sunbelt Kerio Firewall (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio-Download.cfm)

Please download and install only one!

sorry for the delay... life is crazy...

The network connection cable is new. I have reset the router. Though I connect to the router wirelessly, I have a physical port on my computer and when I plug it into the router and the log in, it shows both the physical connection and the wireless connection. BUT when I plug the same cable into the formerly infected computer the router doesn't show a connection in the software - even though it lights up as connected on the front and on the network card. It's like the router is choosing to ignore the computer and not assign it an IP address. I have a spare Ethernet card I installed in the computer and got the same result. I'm guessing I've done something boneheaded that's causing the computer and the router to ignore each other, but I don't know what.

Uninstalling Zone Alarm greatly increased the speed of the computer's overall running - but had no impact on the lack of connectivity. When I try to repair the connection I get the following error:

Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed:
Renewing your IP address

Thanks for all the info. :)

I'm going to ask my fellow malware removers to see if they have any ideas on how to get your Internet connection back up and running.

I'll be back ASAP

I happened to look in HiJack and noticed a line about a WinSock error. It told me to run LSPFix - which I did... and now it works.

WOO HOO!!!

Sorry, I'm a little excited.

The computer is virus free and running beautifully...

Thanks so much for your assistance.

Nice work on restoring the computer's Internet connection. :bigthumb:

I'd like for you to run one more scan for me.

Step # 1 Update Adobe Acrobat Reader

There is a newer version of Adobe Acrobat Reader available. (See Note below)

First, go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall Adobe Reader 7.1.0.
Please go to this link Adobe Acrobat Reader Download Link (http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html)
On the right Untick Adobe Phototshop Album Starter Edition if you do not wish to include this in the installation.
Click the Continue button
Click Run, and click Run again
Next click the Install Now button and follow the on screen prompts

Note: Adobe 9.3.0 is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 3.1.4 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

If you decide to install Foxit 3.1.4 instead of Adobe, do the following during Foxit's Setup/Installation process:

Uncheck the following boxes:

I accept the License Terms and want to install Foxit Toolbar

Make Ask.com my default search

Create desktop, quick launch and start menu icon to eBay

Step # 2: Run Kaspersky Online Scan

Please go to Kaspersky website (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) and perform an online antivirus scan.

Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button: Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Mail databases Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Please post this log in your next reply.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. Kaspersky Log
2. A fresh DDS Log
3. Any other problems with the computer?
