Alpha & Beta Versions

Could someone please explain to me what it means when I read about an Alpha version of spybot and then a beta version,,is the alpha version the 1st one that they run to get all the "bugs" out,,and the beta the final release of the latest version?

Well, almost. Alpha version can be very unstable and it needs a lot to fix still. Beta is next and it's available to public, but it's still unstable and needs some fixes. It continues with Release Candidate (RC) and then final version comes.
