Hi,
This machine is a Dell Latitude D800 w/ XP and the like. And it is used very little actually as it is a laptop that gets passed around my office some (as need be). We have a small appraisal firm so no hi-tech networking or the like (and this machine seldom sees the same network twice other than my home network). Anyways, it seems as though everytime this thing is returned (by a member of our staff who might use it temporarily)? That it is always in need of help! And as such, the hard drive is fragmented files like no tomorrow and the like. Although the reality is that it has never really run right (almost from new). Therefore I usually end up having to fix it more than I get to use it whenever I travel (who ever said ownership has it's priviledges)? And with that being said this time is no exception, except that this thing is nuts this time!

So this machine has always had failures, multiple restarts and the like. And so it seemed par for the course this time as well. Except that I started noticing that it had what seemed like glitches in the spybot system this time. As I started out having:
"Access Violation 005A2766
SypbotSD.exe
Read of Address - 455248BE"

Then I started getting virtumonde.sdn errors that would pop up and then Spy Bot would then just disappear from the screen. Well at one point I had finally downloaded the spybot updates (manually as I couldn't open spybot). And then I had finally gotten this thing to doing something which looked like a step in the right direction. However, that was short lived because once I had the virus or trojan thing fixed? Then I ended up with no networking capabilty as well.

So then I started reading through some "SEEMINGLY SIMILAR POSTS" and following along the same path. That is, before I felt the need to post myself! HOWEVER, I WOULD STRONGLY SUGGEST THAT ANYONE READING THESE POSTS SHOULD ALSO "READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!!!" Just as I should have done myself! You see, it wasn't until I read about how to post that I realized that I should have posted well before now! In that, I had I done so then I would have saved myself a great deal of time and effort! <<Sorry, just the natural male pattern I can fix it (or better yet I don't need a map or directions)!!>> SO AGAIN, I WOULD SUGGEST THAT EVERYONE REVIEW THE "HOW TO POST" HERE! AS I WASTED A LOT OF TIME FOLLOWING OTHERS POSTS! AND THAT WAS ALL MY FAULT AND NOT YOURS AT ALL! So I have tried the RMVIRUT (which said it came up empty, but there were 13 files that could not be opened either)! And this is what I have from Hijack This! Thanks for your help and you folks do a fantastic job!

Hi,

Welcome to the forum. Your HJT log looks fine although this stuff hides. We can run a few scans to check for malware and if nothing shows up then I can direct you to a windows forum as we just do malware removal on this one.

Please download RootRepeal one of these locations and save it to your desktop
Here (http://ad13.geekstogo.com/RootRepeal.exe)
Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/rootrepeal/RootRepeal.exe)
Here (http://rootrepeal.psikotick.com/RootRepeal.exe)

Open http://billy-oneal.com/forums/rootRepeal/rootRepealDesktopIcon.png on your desktop.
Click the http://billy-oneal.com/forums/rootRepeal/reportTab.png tab.
Click the http://billy-oneal.com/forums/rootRepeal/btnScan.png button.
Check just these boxes:
http://forums.whatthetech.com/uploads/monthly_08_2009/post-75503-1250480183.gif
Push Ok
Check the box for your main system drive (Usually C:, and press Ok.
Allow RootRepeal to run a scan of your system. This may take some time.
Once the scan completes, push the http://billy-oneal.com/forums/rootRepeal/saveReport.png button. Save the log to your desktop, using a distinctive name, such as RootRepeal.txt. Include this report in your post.

Hi, thanks for the response and your help here as well!

I downloaded "Root Repeal" and when it started I kept getting the following message:

"ERROR - Invalid PE image found"

So I am not real sure what that means, however I never could down load it so that it would operate "normally". Therefore I tried running a scan anyways which it did do (obviously). Although, I have no idea as to whether or not the above makes this a valid results list or not? However, here you go just the same!

Thanks again for your help!

Hi,

Please download Malwarebytes from Here (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php) or Here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html)

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
http://forums.whatthetech.com/post_a4255_MBAM.PNG
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Post the report and also a new HJT log please

OK, so this took some doing! As the mbam would not initiate at first and then something happened to make system unstable. So I ended up having to restore the machine to stabilize just so I could run it. And when I finally got it to work it removed rogue.virus and required a restart. So all of that has been done and this is the mbam log:

Run this program, it wont remove anything but I would like to see the report

Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.

DDS.com (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds)
DDS.scr (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr)
DDS.pif (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds)

Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
Notepad will open with the results, click no to the Optional_Scan
Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.

Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control Here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)

Nothing bad, run this one.

Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here (http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe) and save it to your desktop.
Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

I am not looking at anything bad on any of your logs. How is it running now ?

Oddly enough it does seems to be stable again? So I am not real sure what the deal is then??

Why don't you run this free online virus scanner as a last check.

ESET (http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner)

Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
Click Start
When asked, allow the activex control to install
Click Start
Make sure that the option Remove found threats is ticked, and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
Click Scan
Wait for the scan to finish
Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

OK, so I tired that and yet I cannot get anywhere with that site? In that, the "click-function" makes the standard noise and makes you think that it is doing something. However, the reality is that nothing is happening! And I checked my active x controls, and I even turned Adode Flas back on closed IE out and reopened it and still nothing? So I have tried everything that I can think of to download the scanner. However, it just is not happening here?

And while I would readily admit that a computer guru I am not. Although, I can typically figure out whatever need be in order to get something done. However, this thing has me stumped? As I thought that it was just a website I was on earlier, however I am just now noticing that it is all websites! So I am now having to right click on links (and start a "new tab" as the standard "click-link" function does not work). Equally as strange is that I cannot right click and use the open a "new window" function either? So now I am really perplexed and I really hadn't noticed this before, however something has a hold of this thing preventing me from downloading at that site! So I am not sure how to get around that one either?

Again, thanks so much for your help! What a pain huh? Thanks! :thanks:

Go ahead and update to Internet Explorer 8, you can do that by opening IE and going to Tools > Windows Updates and download and install all critical updates including IE 8.

You can also download and install it from here
http://www.microsoft.com/nz/windows/internet-explorer/default.aspx

Then try running ESET again

Sorry for the delay, but this thing has been driving me nuts! You see, I attempted to download IE 8 (three different times now). And everything seemed to be going just fine at first, however it didn't take long into the updates before I got a fatal error on the first one. Which was said to be something to do with the drivers? Therefore since the "DELL Accessory" was not there to check or repair the drivers? Then I just followed the microsoft fatal error recovery directions and reinstalled the repair tool. Then I tried to do the repair, however the tool said that everything was fine?

So I rebooted the machine and tried to download IE8 again. Only I tried it without the updates this time (to see if that would help)? No dice! The machine downloaded the file and I started the install, but all of a sudden "Blue Screen!" And after attempting to reboot it kept coming up with an error code and wouldn't let me log onto to windows at all. As it kept giving me an error code that said, "A Problem is preventing windows from accurately checking the license for this computer ERROR CODE 0x800703eb". <<That last digit could be a 6 as I had to transcribe the error, quickly. >> So after this incident I had to restore the machine once again.

Therefore I went back and made sure that I did Windows (and Office) Validation. All of which went off without a hitch. Thereforee I decided that I would try this one last time? So I downloaded IE8 again. Only this time I figured why not try and get the updates as well. However, that was probably a mistake as it went down even faster this time. So this time I got another "Blue Screen" and an all new fatal error code which was that of "c000021a" which then said "Fatal System Error 0xc0000005 (0x00000000 0x00000000)." And oddly enough I was just able to reboot this time (no need for system restore).

And yet, I have just now noticed that Spybot has added some new "Start-Up Values" (highlighted in yellow) which I have seen before but not recently. In that the first one is "KernelFaultC", the next one is "NvCplDaemon" and the last one is always a pain. As it is "ctfmon.exe" which is that of S-1-5-21-999183565-2060898865-3068839346-1006\C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

So after all of that I went back and tried to do the Eset online scan. And yet, it still won't let me? So sorry for the delay and I know that this has to be a pain! So my apologies! And thanks for all of your help! As it is greatly appreciated! Thank You!

I am wondering if this is a hardware issue related to your graphics card.

Why don't you post here , see what they say and then post back. This is our sister site, like Safer its free but you will need to register

OK, you can link them to this thread so they can see what we have done and if you would like you can link me to the other post so I can offer any info they may need.

Hey Man,

Thanks, that is exactly what I was thinking too! As I provided this link in my intial thread to them and I already have a response! Man, you guys don't play around! Anyways, the guy's name is "paws" that is helping me and he offered what sounds (to me) as good solid advice on how to figure out whether or not this is a hardware issue or not? And he said that we could diagnose from there? So here is the link:

http://forums.whatthetech.com/Possible_Hardware_Issue_w_Graphics_Card_t109745.html&gopid=627184#entry627184

And again, thanks ever so much for all of your help and concern! You guys are the bomb!

seedling

OK, a quick status update here is what has happened:

Hi Paws,

I am not real sure what the deal is however it won't even let me see puppy. You see, I used imgburn and copy the software. Then I set the bios and tried to start, however as soon as the screen would come up? Then it would say,

"The amount of system memory has changed. Strike the F1 Key to cointinue, F2 to run the setup utility."

Then I reset everything and I thought that I was about to get it to load when it would then say that it was not a bootable function? So does this sound like a hardware issue to you??

Thanks for all of your help!

I am following your thread over at WTT. Did you set your bios to boot from the CD ?

What is the make and model of your computer ?

2010-02-03, 22:07
Well, it has become clear to me that this machine is possessed! Therefore I am throwing in the towel and sending this thing somewhere to be repaired! As there are obviously issues here and they are well beyond my realm that is for sure! So thanks for all of your help and patience as we really do appreciate! Thanks and sorry for the hassle! :snorkle:

Hi,

Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and have it checked by a reliable shop, stay away from the Geek Squad at Best Buy, there very expensive and you most likely wont be happy with the results. Do you have a local pc repair shop in your area.

As far as wasting our time, that is never an issue, wish we could have done more.

If you get the hardware side of this computer fixed and wonder if you still have some sort of infection, let me know. This thread maybe closed but feel free to repost and if I miss it one of our staff will pick it up.

Good luck,
Ken :)

Thanks a lot as we really do appreciate it! And we do have a local guy that we usually send our stuff to here. So it shouldn't be a problem! Thanks again and we'll do!
