Virus remnants haunting sons computer [Archive]

My son (a college student) had a virus last summer than rendered his computer mostly inoperable. He installed AVG and a spyware program than got it *somwhat* working again, but at this time the CD/DVD device will not work (reports "device not found" when configuration attempts are made), and when a dell tech asked him to run regedit to investigate, he gets a "registry editing has been disabled by your administrator" message, even though he should be the admin. System is also very slow, and randomly freezes for several minutes, and then recovers. Please help me fix this for him before he goes back to school!
