Yahoo Mail Hijacked; Hijack log attached

Thought I had an old Outlook Express hijacked. Rebooted in safe mode and deleted Outlook Express. Turns out it's hijacking Yahoo Mail through Internet Explorer. Need help determining what and how to blow away the hijack program(s) and related registry entries. Appreciate any help you can provide. Thanks.

Do you mean that your Yahoo mail account has been hacked? Have you changed the account password to stronger one yet?

Hi, thanks for responding. Sorry it took me a while to get back to you. I had to travel on business and the problem is on my home PC, not my laptop.

We believe the problem originally occurred because my wife clicked on a link or executable (she doesn't remember which) in an email from a friend. Shortly after that, emails were sent out by Outlook Express. I had an old copy of Outlook Express that I hadn't deleted. When Windows would start, Outlook Express would automatically start in the background and it couldn't the task couldn't be ended. Eventually, I started the computer in Safe Mode, and was able to go and delete the Outlook Express directory, which I thought would stop the problem in short term. I then installed Hijack, created a log and posted it.

Not long after messages went out again, and it appeared they went from our Yahoo account. Once again my wife, who is home during the day, thought the PC seemed to hang for a big when she went into our Yahoo mail account to update contacts. Everyone in our Yahoo mail contacts list got the junk viagra email. The wierd thing is, there didn't appear to be any of the junk email messages in the "sent" folder in Yahoo mail.

At your suggestion before I left last week on business I did change the yahoo mail account password, and to one more complex. We also (for the time being) deleted all the contacts in Yahoo mail. Then I created two test Yahoo mail accounts and created a contact in each test account for the other test account. I then went on to the home PC and accessed each of the test accounts between each other, updated the contacts, etc., to see if any of these activities would generate any junk messages being sent out, but nothing happened.

I am concerned about a couple of things. First I am concerned the original malware that was messing with Outlook Express is still present. Second, that if the problem with Yahoo mail was not a compromised password, but instead is because of malware on the PC, that the malware may only activate pre-defined intervals, and so could pop again at any time.

Were you able to see any issues with the Hijack log I posted? Do you need me to post another? Please let me know and thanks a lot for your help.

Hi,

Hjt log gives quite limited information. Let's run a few other tools.

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds) or here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr) or here (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds).
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
DDS.txt
Attach.txt

Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.



Download GMER (http://www.gmer.net) here by clicking download exe -button and then saving it your desktop:
Double-click .exe that you downloaded
Click rootkit-tab and then scan.
Don't check
Show All
box while scanning in progress!
When scanning is ready, click Copy.
This copies log to clipboard
Post log (attach it if too lengthy) in your reply.
