Hello to all, New to the forum, a friend and current member recommended you. I recently picked up a virus/malware after opening up an email from itunes. It was a reciept for some downloads, which I viewed. Some suggestions with links appeared on the right. I clicked on one of them, I had downloaded a game from them before, and was immediately redirected to a different web page/site. This site indicated that my computer was infected with viruses and that "Personal Security" would perform a free scan of my computer. I knew this was not right and clicked on the "x" to close it and what appeared to be a scan of my computer began to run. I immediately shut down my computer and then rebooted, all appeared to be okay.

A couple of days later it happened again when opening an email from U-verse, this time I hit the reset button, upon reeboot all appeared okay. I ran the McAffe provided by ISP which found nothing. I down loaded Malwarebytes and ran it, 2 or three Trojans were found which I had removed/fixed. A day or so later it happened again after opening an email. A cooworker recommended that I down load SS&D. I did so and ran it along with the immunize feature. A few items were found and fixed but my problem still exist. I did try one more down load, "Spyware Doctor", but was not able to run it. I have since uninstalled Malwarebytes and Spyware Doctor.

As requested I downloaded and ran ERUNT and HJT. I did how ever forget to disable Resident Tea Timer prior to running Erunt, hopefully this does not pose a problem. I have attached my HJT log below. Please bear with me as I am not a computer wiz but can follow instructions. Also I work shift work and am on an extended schedule so it may be a couple of days before I can reply. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.....Ed

ken545, I will be happy to perform all that you ask but could you please tell me the best way to back up my important data; mostly pictures, game saves, taxes etc.Sorry for the question but I am not a computer whiz. The last time I saved/backed up data, which was the last time I had a virus-had to reformat (with lots of help), most of it was bad. Any help on backing up you can give me is greatly appreciated. Thanks.....Ed

Good Morning ED,

Its best to ask questions and stay within this thread, a lot of people read it and would benefit from the replies.

You can back up your documents and pictures to a CD or a USB Flashdrive. The safest way would be to a CD, the reason being is that at this point I am not sure what your infected with and using a removable drive like a USB drive can become infected by certain malware and then you would take the chance of cleaning this computer and then reinfecting it when you insert the flash drive to copy back your files.

You would have to have a CD or DVD burner on your system and the software that goes along with it. You do have Roxio installed which is the software to create or copy disks so I would assume you have a burner.

You can open Roxio and look for the option to create a Data Disk and then you just browse to the folders of the documents and photos that you want to save and add them.

You can then use the disk to reinstall your data as the disk can not be written to by a virus, but if one of your files is infected than that could be a problem also.

The steps that I have outlined for you to run are safe, go ahead and run them and lets see where we stand

Ken545, First let me thank you for your help and patience, I really do appreciate it. I took the steps you outlined but had trouble with RootRepeal. I down loaded it to my desk top...1. opened it...2. clicked "Repeort" tab...3. clicked "Scan"...4. checked the requested boxes...5. clicked "OK", scanning appeared at bottom of the page...did not get a chance/prompt to check the box for the main system drive. Since the apparent scan was taking awhile I left the room for a moment. Upon returning the computer was going through a restart. I tried to run RootRepeal again but my computer locked up after step "5" above, had to press reset to free it up. I did notice a new icon just below the "RootRepeal" icon , it looks like a Windows Media icon named "settings.dat". Please advise on how to proceed. Thanks again.....Ed

Lets bypass RootRepeal for now and run Malwarebytes

Please download Malwarebytes from Here (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php) or Here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html)

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
http://forums.whatthetech.com/post_a4255_MBAM.PNG
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Post the report and also a new HJT log please

Your log looks ok, but run these programs so we can dig deeper.

Please download Rooter Rootkit Detector (http://eric.71.mespages.googlepages.com/Rooter.exe) to your Desktop

Doubleclick it to start the tool.
A Notepad file containing the report will open, also found at %systemdrive% (usually C:\Rooter.txt.
Post the report for me to see.

Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here (http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe) and save it to your desktop.
Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Good Morning,

You did just fine and your logs look fine also. How are things running now?

Good afternoon Ken545, I haven'ty had much time at my computer since my last post, stopped so I could spend time with my wife. Currently I am at work, won't be home until around 6pm. If I have time I will see if the problem pops up again, I'm sure my wife will be on the computer today so I will ask her. It might take a few days to be sure we have rid my computer of the menacing problem, I will keep you posted. I do have a question for you, do you think it is safe to do on line banking now? Kudos to you and all the others that keep this forum going, you are all teriffic.I will definitely send a donation. Thanks again.....Ed

Hi,

There are so many serious threats going around and yours seemed fairly mild so as far as online banking I would say your most likely ok but to be 100% sure a format and reinstall of windows would be the way to go, but this is up to you.

Thanks for your offer of donation, this forum as are most of the other malware removal forums are staffed by volunteers and donations just go to help keep us online.

A safe option would be to use a clean known computer and access the sites you use like your banking and change the passwords.

I will keep this thread open for you for a week or so, post back and let me know how things are doing.

How did I get infected in the first place ?
Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.
Tutorial for System Restore (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial56.html) <-- Do this first to prevent yourself from being reinfected.
WhattheTech (http://forums.whatthetech.com/So_how_did_I_get_infected_in_the_first_place_t57817.html)
Grinler BleepingComputer (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic2520.html)
GeeksTo Go (http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/index.php?autocom=custom&page=How_did_I)
Dslreports (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10002)

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard, they will conflict with the TeaTimer in Spybot , you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer .

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.

Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.

Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.

IE-Spyad (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23332-order,1-page,1-c,antispywaretools/description.html)
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

Firefox 3 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Safe Surfn
Ken

Ken, I will let you know if the problem comes up again. I already have SBSD installed but will give the others a try. What effect does disabling TeaTimer have on the protection of my computer? What else can I say except for thank you very much for taking time out of your schedule to help with my problem, you are to kind. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.....Ed

ED, if you install SpywareGuard, leave the Teatimer disabled as it does the samething as SG. All they do is block changes to your system and SpywareBlaster helps to block bad downloads.

Good Luck,

Ken :)

Ken, It has been several days since you determined my computer was no longer infected, the virus/malware has not been seen since, I think we can call this a success. As I said before what you and your co-malware fighters do is fantastic and a real help to those of us who fall victim to it and don't know what to do. I did install the programs you suggested in hopes this will prevent future problems. However, I decided not to reformat yet but will do it if and when I have trouble again. I happily made a donation to the cause and dedicate it to you. Again thanks for all the time and effort you put in to helping me, I really do appreciate it. and take care.....Ed

Thats great Ed, glad things are working well again.

Thanks for the donation, this forum as are most of the rest of the malware removal forums is staffed by volunteer helpers and a donation big or small just goes for research into new threats and helps to keep us online.

Thank you

Take care,
Ken :)
