Hi, clearly I have made mistakes somewhere along the line with my computer. I am frustrated by my computer restarting regularly with "Windows Plug and Play Terminated Unepectedly" and "DCOM....Terminated Unexpectedly Errors" I coul really use some help. I read the "Read before you post" article and am really hoping someone can give me a hand. I cannot run both malwarebyes, nor windows malicious software removal tool.

Hi,

I have bad news I'm afraid. :sad:

One or more of the identified infections is a Back-door Trojan.

OK since we are dealing with the aforementioned infection(s) I would be providing your good self with a disservice if I did not make you aware of the ramifications below:

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Although an attempt could be made to clean this machine, it could never be considered to be truly clean, secure, or trustworthy. We could not say definitively that unknown and unseen malware will have been removed, nor will your system be restored to its pre-infection state. We cannot remedy unknown changes the malware may likely have made in order to allow itself access, nor can we repair the damage it may possibly have caused to vital system files. Additionally, it is quite possible that changes made to the system by the malware may impact negatively on your computer during the removal process. In short, your system may never regain its former stability or its full functionality without a reformat. Therefore, your best and safest course of action is a reformat and reinstallation of the Windows operating system, and that is the course we strongly recommend.

Well having carried out a reformat and reinstallation of the Windows operating system should have essentially removed all infections I identified and your machine should be as it was when you first purchased it.

We can carry out a few scans if you so wish to ensure all is well and I will provide some advice about online safety advice.

What in the log highlighted this concern for you? The main infection was what is known as a Backdoor.Win32.IRCBot (http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Threat/Encyclopedia/Entry.aspx?name=Win32%2fIRCBot). Which basically is a a back-door computer trojan/worm which if left would have further infected your machine exponentially with the possible effect your computer may have become what is known as a zombie machine and controlled remotely without your knowledge and used for nefarious reasons.

Also there would have been a very high chance in my experience there would have been further as of yet unidentified infections that the HijackThis scan did not reveal, so overall you did make the best decision.

Vista Advice:

All applications I ask to be used will require to be run in Administrator mode. IE: Right click on and select Run as Administrator.

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

Note: No need to right click on the TFC executable it will automatically run in a elevated admin' mode.


Please download TFC (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/TFC.exe) to your desktop,
Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
Click the Start button in the bottom left of TFC
If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.

Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It should not take longer than a couple of minutes , and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php) to your desktop.


Right-click mbam-setup.exe and select Run as Administrator then follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please post that log in your next reply.

Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Click on the Logs radio tab.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

ESET Online Scanner:

Vista users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan.

When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
Scan for potentially unwanted applications
Scan for potentially unsafe applications
Enable Anti-Stealth Technology

The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!

Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.

Sorry to quote Outkast in the subject line, but things are looking well for this little machine I call my computer. I have no residual symptoms or collateral damage as far as I can tell, and I always enjoy the opportunity to start fresh with a computer, and choose once again what should/should not be on the computer and have the time to organize it properly.

Normally I would say create a new topic but if your fathers computer is in the same location as yours not a problem. If it is not it would be best your father creates his own topic requesting assistance.

Now if your fathers computer is in the same location/household:-

1 - Is a Router in use at all?

2 - Which Operating System is in use?

3 - Is a genuine Microsoft reinstalltion CD/DVD available in-case the need.

4 - Can the infected machine be booted up into Safe Mode with Network Support or is Safe Mode the only boot feature available?



I made a back-up on my external hard drive prior to OS re-install, is it safe to restore those files, or is the virus hiding in one of them? I would disinfect your external HDD first as follows:-

Flash_Disinfector:

Please download Flash_Disinfector (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/Flash_Disinfector.exe) and save it to your desktop.
Right click on Flash_Disinfector.exe and select Run As Administrator to run it. If you receive a prompt, please allow it.
You will be prompted to plug in your flash drive. Plug it in. <-- In this case plug in your external HDD.
Flash_Disinfector will start disinfecting your flash and hard drives. This takes a few seconds. Your desktop will disappear in the meantime.
When done, a message box will appear. Click OK. Your desktop should now appear. If it doesn't, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
Click on File > New Task (Run...). Type in explorer.exe and press Enter. Your desktop should now appear.
Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection.

Next:

Now now scan your external HDD first with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then with your installed Anti-Virus.

Easy way to do so >> double click on My Computer >> right click on the drive letter/icon designation for your external HDD and select from the menu Scan with etc etc.

If nothing flagged it should be safe to reinstall your backups.
