View Full Version : Killapps problem maybe?

I'm having a problem on another computer with popups for anti-viruses that are obviously viruses. I can't install any anti-virus on it right now because it prevents me from doing so by claiming that the software attempting to install is a virus. I found a KILLAPPS.EXFile along with some registry values(KillaApp.b - C:\WINDOWS\System32\KILLAPPS.EXFile) using Adware Professional 5.0, but can't remove it due to the inability to register it online, nor could I provide a postable log. The second scan I ran with Adware only showed the Killapp. I don't know what happened to the registry values. I also ran a scan with AVG but all it found was tracking cookies and I went ahead and delted those. I know that I could delete the Killapp.exfile manually, but I don't know how to find the other files it may support or be dependent on. It MUST stay offline and be booted in safe mode in order to be worked on (I brought my computer over to use the net and a jumpdrive to funnel needed software to the infected). It may be a day or two before I can get back to this post as I live elsewhere so extra steps in advance would be great. I've posted before so: 1) I know posting extra steps in advance can be tough and/or tricky; and 2) I'm a very fast learner so I can keep up without the extra finite details.

As of right now, the infected computer has the following:
Adware Professional 5.0 (needs to be updated)
AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5.0.50 (needs to be updated)
Avast (free online version - status unknown)

Thanks in advance.

Oh, and hijack this is already renamed, and hidden files are already viewable.

Unfortunately, this is my only log:

I finally found a way to install Spybot Search and Destroy and (by some miracle) managed to get it to update online. It ran a scan, I deleted the results, and allowed it to scan on reboot. Eveything seems fine, though I haven't tested the internet. It's been running for about three hours now without any indication of a virus. I'm sure that there are still files lingering around somewhere that need to be deleted, but am still not so sure on how to find and eliminate them. That aside, things seem fine.

If anyone would like to help me at this point I have two requests (aside from making sure everything is properly cleaned). First, I can't seem to find an actual [I]download link for the Micro Trend HJT. I know that it says NOT to use version 1.99 or lower but where's the link? I know that this is primarily why I haven't got a response yet, but frankly, I'm tired of trying to find that download.

Second, the registry on the computer I'm trying to save is rather beat to hell; the computer is years old and has never been cleaned up properly.

I apologize for being hasty in trying to fix the problem and apologize if it makes the task of removing viruses harder. It's just that my mother uses her computer quite the bit and can't afford to go days without it; at the very least I needed to get it back up and running for her.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Found the Macro Trend HJT
I can't get on the internet with the infected computer. It shows that I'm connected but with limited connectivity. I can't renew the ipconfig in the command prompt because it tells me that I'm unable to contact my DHCP server, but it shows that I have a legit IP address (I have a modem connected to my router, and my router connected to the computers). I can't ipconfig/flushdns; I get Could not flush the DNS Resolver Cache: Function failed during execution. If I Run/Services.msc and try to start the DNS Client myself I get this: Coudl not start the DNS Client service on local computer. Error 193: 0xc1.

What the hell happened to my internet?

Just wanted to put an update on this post. First, I'm a bit of a proactive learner is situations like this so rather than sitting idly by and waiting for help (no disrespect intended) I'd often opt to at least learn about the problem. Sometimes I can learn how to clean or fix it. I'd also like to note here that I've only used tools posted on these forums. Anyways...

I managed to get SSD to run and scan (with updated database). As it would turn out, only two of the three desktops were affected (all three have admin rights; I used the other unaffected desktop to connect to the net for updates on scanning software). I kept the results in case they're needed but they're quarantined for now. I also found out that it was a rootkit virus (no surprise; ). As recommended, I ran MalwareBytes and deleted the results (didnt bother to save a log). Then ran SSD again, and nothing. Ran Malwarbytes again, and nothing. No virus problems at all either, BUT, whenever I attempted to cennect to the internet, the browser would fail. It told me I had limited or no connectivity, that I was connected but that I might want to try re-connecting. I tried using the console to ipconfig/dnsflush and it didn't work ("Could not flush the DNS Resolver Cache: Function failed during execution"). I tried services.cmd to manually start the DNS Client and it says "Could not start the DNS Client service on Local Computer. Error 193: 0xc1"

I've used ComboFix (yes, I understand the risk and potential to harm my computer--again, I'm a proactive learner.) I saved the logs generated from the software. I couldn't find a way to disable avast before running it but it didn't create any problems. It did delete files from the computer that seemed to help quite the bit (though I can't say now what they are--that's why I saved the logs).

I tried running SmitFraudFix to resolve the DNS problems but that didn't work either. I've even tried re-installing the TCP/IP settings and the Winsock and Winsock32 files. Still no success.

I'm 99% certain that the virus is pretty much gone; nothing is active, nothing is popping up, no re-directs, no hidden files or processess (though from my past experiences on these forums, I'm sure there are inactive remnants). The only problem the computer has at this point is that the browser won't load webpages. I would post a log here, but considering the amount of info I have available on hand, I'll wait to see what you'd prefer to have first.

I apologize for my hastiness in trying to self this on my own. I know that the most important step is not messing with anything after posting, but my mother needs her computer desperately, and giving my willingness to learn, my ability to learn fast, and my incredible patience, I couldn't just sit here and do nothing.

Thanks in advance.
