View Full Version : Help! I'm being hijacked!

I'm at the end of my rope. I have the virus from hell and can't get rid of it. For the past two days I have scanning and removing etc., but it won't go aways. Here are my notes and my log:

1. Primary initial symptom was that Inernet Security 2010 kept installing intself and my browser kept getting hijacked. For two days I did full scans with both Malwarebytes and Microsoft Security Essentials. They kept finding 'infections' and cleaning them, but it kept coming back.

2. At one point it killed my Malwarebytes. I went to BleepingComputer.com and followed their instructions, using rkill.com and downloading the compnent of Malwarebytes the virus destroyed. I got Malwarebytes back and it seemed to have gotten rid of Internet Security 2010 (I did it this morning and it hasn't come back yet).

3. Although IS2010 seems to be gone, my browsers (both IE and Foxfire) keep getting hijacked. I can go to a website if I type in an address, but using Google or Yahoo is worthless - I keep getting re-directed to the sites from hell.

4. I ran Spybot Search & Destroy. It found several infections and cleaned them - but my browsers still get hijacked.

5. I cannot start Windows in safe mode. I get the blue screen of death with "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen restart your computer . . . " Windows starts ok in normal mode, but I've tried safe mode about 20 times in the last two days with the same result.

6. I am getting a Just in Time degger pop-up a lot. Never had that before yesterday.

7. When I just now went in to turn off Tea Timer I saw the note with a time and date stamp of about ten minutes ago that "Allowed (based on user decision) value "ctfmon.exe." (new data: "C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe) added in system startup user entry"

I have read the BEFORE you POST note and have done everything on it and now I'd like to kick the $%#@ out of this thing (I'm stubborn that way. Any help I could get would be GREATLY appreciated.

Here's my HJT log:

Hi dgh0911 and welcome to the forums here at Spybot S&D.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : How to Disable your Security Programs (http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_to_Disable_your_Security_Programs_t96260.html)

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/whatnext.png

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply. Please also post an updated HijackThis log and let me know how it's running.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

You're awesome.

I think that may have done it. Last night IS 2010 had come back and I was about to take a hammer to this thing. But I did what you said and it looks like it's gone. The browser redirect problem seems to be gone too - I can now use google and yahoo without any problems. It looks like it's working fine.

Here are my ComboFix and HJT logs:

Great, glad things are running better.

I would suggest you update and run MalwareBytes Anti-Malware. Post the log if anything is found.

I'd also like for you to run this next online scan to check for remnants or anything that might be hidden.
The below scan can take up to an hour or longer, please be patient.

*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so no conflicts and to speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once scan is finished remember to re-enable resident antivirus protection along with whatever antispyware app you use.

Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) or from here
http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition
files.
After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer.
This will start the program and scan your system.
The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. (At times it may appear to stall)
* Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
* Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
* Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.

Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report To obtain the report:
Click on: Save Report As
Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select:
Text file [*.txt]
Then, click: Save
Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in
your reply.

(Note.. for Internet Explorer 7 users:
If at any time you have trouble with the "Accept" button of the license, click on the "Zoom" tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.)
Or use Firefox with IE-Tab plugin

Kaspersky log
New HJT log taken after the above scan has run

Ok - I updated MalwareBytes and ran a full scan and it found 16 items infected. It rebooted my computer and I ran a quickscan and it found no infected items (I didn't run a full scan because I was leaving for work). My log is posted below.

Earlier this evening I tried to run the Kaspersky Online Scan but ran into problems. It downloaded fine, and it started to scan alright, but about ten minutes into it my computer screen started flashing wildly. Between flashes I could see that it was still scanning so I let it go. In between flashes I noticed that it found 1 threat on 2 infected items.

I came back about an hour later and it was still flashing wildly. I let it keep going and came back another hour later and the screen was pretty much blanked-out and it looked like the computer was frozen. I tried ctrl-alt-del but nothing happened - my computer was locked-up. I ended up powering off.

I tried to run the scan again but the same thing happened - for about ten minutes it looked like it was scanning fine, but then the screen started flashing wildly.

I powered off again and then ran HighJack This. The HJT log is also posted below.

My computer seems to be running ok - IS2010 has not come back (yet) and my browser is not being hijacked - but from the scans it looks like I might still have some bugs. If you could give me some more guidance I would really appreciate it.

Here are my logs:

Hi,

You want to let MalwareBytes fix those items. You can see the log says no action taken. To do that...

When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

Post the log after that.

We can also try another online scanner.

Eset Online Scanner (http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/)
Run with Internet Explorer

Place a check mark in the box YES, I accept the Terms Of Use
Click the Start button.
Now click the Install button, or click the notification bar at the top of the window and choose to install.
Click Start. The scanner engine will initialize and update.
Do Not place a check mark in the box beside Remove found threats.
Click the Scan button. The scan will now run, please be patient.
When the scan finishes click the Details tab.
Copy and paste the contents of the C:\ProgramFiles\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt into your next reply.

That's strange about the MalwareBytes - I am pretty sure I click the "Remove Selected" button . . .

I ran another full scan and it found one infected item. I clicked Remove Selected to get rid of it. The log is below.

I then ran ESET. It found 2 infected files. As instructed I did not check the "Remove found threats" box. I did not see the Details tab that you mentioned but there was an option for "List of found threats" I clicked it and copied the results below.

And finally, I did an updated HiJack This. The log is posted below . . .

Okay just some final cleanup and security check ups.

You don't appear to be running any Antivirus?

You need to update Java and we can clear out the malware in the cache.

1. Click on the Start button at the bottom of your screen.
2. Click on Control Panel - you may need to switch to 'Classic view'.
3. Double-click on Java.
4. Click on the Delete Files button, then click OK.
5. Click OK again.
6. Close the Java Control Panel.

http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/javaicon.gif Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application.
Upgrading Java:

Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE)JRE 6 Update 18 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
Click on Continue.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u17-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.(Vista users, right click on the jre-6u18-windows-i586-p.exe and select "Run as an Administrator.")

Uninstall Combofix

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /U, it needs to be there.

The above procedure will:

Delete the following: ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
Reset the clock settings.
Hide file extensions, if required.
Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
Reset System Restore.

++++++++++++++++

Download Security Check by screen317 from here (http://screen317.spywareinfoforum.org/SecurityCheck.exe) or here (http://screen317.changelog.fr/SecurityCheck.exe).
Save it to your Desktop.
Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

I shut off my anti-virus programs because I thought I shouldn't run them while doing scans. My plan was - once everything was clean - was to run Microsoft Security Essentials or one of the programs mentioned in the post above ("How did I get infected in the first place?")

I cleared out the Java cache, uninstalled the old version of Java, and installed the latest version of Java per your instructions.

I uninstalled ComboFix and then rant Security Check. Here is the Security Check log:

Hi,
Not sure why it says Java is out of date, but it's okay.

Your Adobe Reader is way out of date though. You can get an updated version below:
http://get.adobe.com/reader/

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

In addition to updating and using what you currently have you may want to consider the following:

Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. Here is a list of some free and evaluation versions to try:
AVG AntiVirus (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-anti-virus-free)
Avast Antivirus Home Version--Free (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html)
Antivir Personal - Free (http://www.free-av.com/)

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Here are some free and evalutation versions that provide
better security than the Windows Firewall.
Online-Armor (http://www.tallemu.com/free-firewall-protection-software.html)
Outpost Firewall (http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpostfree/)
For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some other available ones see the link below:
Understanding and Using Firewalls (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=60)

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=49)

Install Winpatrol -
Use Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) to take control of your PC and provide another layer of security.
Help file and tutorial can be found Here (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)

Block unwanted parasites with a custom hosts file -
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly or set your computer to receive automatic updates. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Update all of your Anti-Malware programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed and the ones you are currently running regularly. Without regular updates you Will Not be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Keep your applications up to date -
Use Secunia Personal Software Inspector (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/) to help stay on top of application updates that could leave your PC vulnerable to attack.

I'll leave the thread open a few days in case you have questions or issues.

Regards,
Dave
