My PC be doing some wierd stuff lately..

I have Norton 360 antivirus and it doesn't find anything at all..
Neither did Trend housecall.

But occasionally, my system will hang for a minute (Windows freezes and only thing that works is the mouse cursor moves around) and this melody plays out of my motherboard speaker..

Sometimes it comes back from the hang, sometimes it reboots, and the melody continues to play during the Bios screen..

I have a wav recording I did on my smartphone of the wierd melody. I can upload it if you like. It's only 176kbytes
Here is my hijackthis log.

Seems like it was hardware failure.. my hard drive is going bad.

Never heard a hard drive play a melody before.

new hard drive & reinstall = no more problems yet.

It was at one time a feature built into the machines mainboard by the BIOS chip vendor. The music wasn't coming from Windows itself. Dont know if its still used as a feature or not. As you know now its a warning of possible failure of components. Just out of curiosity how old is your machine and the vendor/model if you dont mind.

There's no speaker on my motherboard. I thought it was the bios warning at first, but when I emailed tech support for my system, they replied there was no speaker inside. It's a Shuttle SG31G2

The hard drive is a maxtor 250g manufactured Oct 2004. The hard drive specifically is where the noise was coming from. The "music" wasn't coming from a speaker, rather it was acoustics coming from either the spindle driver or the head mechanism or both and comprised of rhythmic clicks, 'beeps' and chirps.

The drive gets hot very quickly now. and you can actually feel that a bearing is seizing or maybe one of the coils is open.. the drive pulses like a heartbeat just running in my hand.

Here's the sound as recorded by my smartphone to a wav file..

That all makes sense. Hard drives have moving parts that can make noise. I was thinking you where hearing actual music playing. I listened to the .wav file. You could use it as a ring tone on the phone. It would make a good story.
