(Spybot_v1.6.2 with latest detection update installed.)

I've got an elderly relative who uses the internet mainly for email.
The hardware and software on his desktop has been updated by me
several times, but he's still using 98SE.

For the first time, I'm a little concerned that some kind of malware may
be lerking on this desktop. I don't want to sound any alarm bells. It's
probably nothing.

A complete scan with his antivirus app turned up nothing. I'd like to run
Spybot, but I can't get it to load or run normally. The progress bar
stops at the end and almost appears to freeze. When the app finally
loads, it never makes it through a complete run. There is always some
kind of error message.

I tried to run Spybot in Safe Mode. It loads easier, but it still stops,
crashes, or simply terminates before it can complete a full scan.

The only FAQ that seems to apply to this problem is this one:

"What can I do if Spybot-S&D freezes during scan?"

I tried Safe Mode already. Do you think following the other steps listed
in this FAQ will help?

He frequently runs a couple of system cleanup apps, so there aren't
cookies, temporary, or junk files clogging up his system.

As I said, his main antivirus app found nothing, but I always feel a lot
safer when a reliable app like Spybot gives my own computers a clean
bill of health.

Thanks guys.

Hello,

Which error message do you get exactly?
Have you also tried the other recommended steps from this FAQ (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/faq/52.html)?
Did you disable any other security software?
Did you undo the scan for usage tracks and cookies?

Best regards
