This machine has something going wrong with it. First was Malware Defense. Seem to have gotten rid of that, but also had some items that KAV Rescue Disk found. Webtoolbar.win32 and Packed.Win32.tdss. Have not been able to KAV Trial Edition to load. Install eventually completes and will not start. Thanks in advance for your help - below is the HJT log - please let me know what the next steps are

Here are some more symptoms to the problem. When I removed Malware Defence I had to follow the instructions to rename Malwarebytes to explorer.exe and then inject the random named main executable to make it run after the installation. Once MD was removed I uninstalled Malwarebytes and tried to load KAV 2010. Installation continued to the point that all the files loaded, but the selection screen for the trial version or licensed install wouldn't come up and KAV would not load. I tried re-installing malwarebytes and it would not load without renaming either.

I also am getting some corrupt file messages and the suggestion to run Chkdsk on a text file in the cookie folder for MSN Messenger. The file doesn't exist.

I tried running Chkdsk without any switches from the command console, it obviously reported an error. Changed and ran chkdsk c: /f and it scheduled chkdsk to run at the next boot and it failed to run at all and windows booted normally. Tried the same from Windows Explorer, but it wouldn't give me the standard message that it needed to reboot to perform the operation.

In the Users applet off control panel there is also a admin user I had not seen before ASP.NET Machine Account that is password protected.

Both IE and Firefox will not keep a connection to a AV site for more than a few seconds, reporting either having a problem and must close. Checked the Internet options and no proxy settings are enabled.

Have not done much research yet, but is this the behavior of a rootkit virus? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello,

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds) or here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr) or here (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds).
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
DDS.txt
Attach.txt

Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

Download GMER (http://www.gmer.net) here by clicking download exe -button and then saving it your desktop:
Double-click .exe that you downloaded
Click rootkit-tab and then scan.
Don't check
Show All
box while scanning in progress!
When scanning is ready, click Copy.
This copies log to clipboard
Post log (if the log is long, archive it into a zip file and attach instead of posting) in your reply.

Blade81, thanks a ton for your help. Wasn't sure what a long GMER log would be but figured 150K was long.

Thanks for the logs :)

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully first.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

Tried to run Combofix, it will not run in Normal boot mode.

Malwarebytes is loaded, but it doesn't have an active scanning mode. Attempted to load Kaspersky 2010 but it never completed. Are either of these two items a cause or do I need to stop the rootkit's process from running?

Hi,

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it (stickfish.exe for example) before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii277/sUBs_/combofix/CF_download_rename.gif
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on stickfish.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with fresh dds log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Ok. Had to download combofix to a usb and rename. tried to use firefox on infected machine and just before it was done with the d/l it croked. Had to run the renamed version a couple times before it actually ran. It started to run and I was told there were some bad files and to report to Microsoft - ignored. Combofix (renamed) kept running. When it went to make the restore point I got a message that pev.exe had failed and to send a report to MS as it all had to quit - ignored. System Recovery Console downloaded and when that completed it gave me a explorer.exe error that it had to quit and report to microsoft - ignored, got another pev.exe report as well - ignored.

Combofix stopped and with a big dialog box called Rootkit !! is displaying saying Combofix has detected Rootkit activity and needs to reboot. It also asked me to write down on paper some file names as I may need them later.

C:\windows\System32\drivers\H8SRTbxoqmdnipv.sys
c:\windows\system32\H8SRTuimpgiutlp.dll
c:\windows\system32\H8SRTmqrafmpwyg.dat
c:\windows\system32\H8SRTnpnsbouvxw.dll
c:\windows\system32\H8SRTisfnbmacxq.dll
c:\windows\system32\H8SRTuswopvpimi.dll

There is no taskbar at the bottom of the screen so should I use task manager to reboot - there is no drive activity at this time and its been well past the ten minutes that combofix quoted to run

stickfish

Clicked the button to re-boot and was warned not to manually reboot - just let it do its thing. Re-booted and logged back on, combofix continued to run.

I guess I was confused by the possibility of this not being detailed on the instructions for combofix - more (a log I hope) later.

OK that was a little un-nerving, but I think something is working again as kaspersky asked for its license key as Combofix was writing its log file.

Good. That took the rooter off :)

Uninstall old Adobe Reader versions and get the latest one (9.3) here (http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=10&platform=Windows) or get Foxit Reader here (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader_2/down_reader.htm). Make sure you don't install toolbar if choose Foxit Reader! You may also check free readers introduced here (http://pdfreaders.org/).

Check here (http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/) to see if your Flash is up-to-date (do it separately with each of your browsers). If not, uninstall vulnerable versions by following instructions here (http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html). Fresh version can be obtained here (http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/).

Is your Kaspersky license still valid? Please update the program and run a scan with it.

Also, please start MBAM, go to update tab and check for updates. When done, run a quick scan deleting found items. Post back the report & fresh dds log. How's the system running?

OK, How is the computer running, sluggish, but then its a single core 2.8 gig with 512mb of ram - to be expected.

Two unusual events were noted. During the Kaspersky scan (yes trial version is still licensed), the wireless network connection became disabled. The machine can almost see the router, and has an excellent signal strength. Kaspersky did detect some pieces of the rootkit, but they look to be stored in a restore point.

Other odd item right after the MBAM scan I tried to run DDS, but the machine forcefully rebooted. Not sure that is normal.

Hi,

During the Kaspersky scan (yes trial version is still licensed)
You need to get subscription or replace Kaspersky with other solution. When trial expires new updates are no longer possible leaving system under threat.

Have you defragged hard drive lately? That might improve system performance.

Owner is planning on purchasing a licensed version shortly, before the trial period expires. I've not defraged it, but will set that to run shortly, along with amking sure all the MS updates are applied. Turned on MS firewall and turned on windows update.

Besides that is this one cured?

Yes, I believe we're ready for the final steps :)

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

Click START then RUN
Now copy-paste Combofix /uninstall in the runbox and click OK

Please download OTC (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTC.exe) and save it to desktop.

Double-click OTC.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the
Begin cleanup Process?
prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,

I'll take care of that stuff as soon as defrag is done and report back. The system appears to be running normally and nothing unusual happening.

One other thing I'm going to do is take the two user accounts on the machine and demote them to standard user accounts so neither is accessing the internet frequently in the administrator context of the machine following the Microsoft LUP guidelines. I'll also create the owner of the system an admin account with a strong password.

Sadly I may be back with her second laptop in a few days, it sounds like it is having the same problems. I learned my lesson back when I first joined with a virtamunde infection (thanks Shaba). The service that you volunteers provide is very valuable. Thank you for your time and assistance.

You're welcome :)

Creating limited accounts sounds good.

Only hitch was uninstalling combofix. It wouldn't, deleted the exe by hand, found the folder it used and deleted all the files. Other than that the machine is definitly running much better, thanks again. Till the next time:angel:

Hi,

ComboFix has to be uninstalled properly. Please do this:
1. Download a fresh version to your desktop.
2. Disable antivirus protection.
3. Click start->run and copy paste following bolded command in the run box:

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /skipfix

That will make ComboFix run. Reboot if asked to do so and then make sure antivirus is disabled before copy-pasting the following command to run box:

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /uninstall
