Win32 reboot - Now no boot

moonwalk

New member
Hope that my system isn't totally gone. I need it to hold on for a while longer.

A friend recommended this forum and loaned me a computer as mine is so messed up that it will no longer boot up.

Before it got to this point, it had been automatically rebooting - seems like the error message had Win32 in it and maybe NT. Confusing since left NT behind for XP a long time ago. System restores were attempted on Jan 30, but none were successful older than Jan 16 - obviously didn't help since it won't boot up now.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Add'l info - links to IE search results were also a problem. Selecting them often resulted in being connected to a "Survey".

Hi,

Restart system and press F8 to access boot menu. Select "disable automatic restart on system failure" option and try to start normally. Note down possible error.

I am able to select

Disable automatic restart...
then:
Microsoft Windows XP Professional

Didn't appear to "take". Still only see the blue screen "error message" for a flash. The message is several lines long, fills up about half of the screen. About 10 tries and all I could make out was:

...has been detected...

Hi,

I'm afraid this won't be easy without seeing the error. You could try to repair your Windows installation. Instructions for doing this can be found here. You'll need your XP installation media for that.

the machine doesn't boot in safe mode - it "sticks" at this line: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\agp440.sys

these are the beginnings of some of the lines I can read on the error page:
A problem has been detected
Run a diagnostic utility
Disable or remove any
Advanced startup options
Disable components
Technical information:
Stop 0x000*007F (xoo8

I don't see a definitive error message. Can you tell me which line would be most likely to contain the relevant info?

Also, discovered the machine will boot in debug mode. Can it be worked on in this mode?

Hi,

Also, discovered the machine will boot in debug mode. Can it be worked on in this mode?
We can try if you're able to provide a few logs.

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

Download GMER here by clicking download exe -button and then saving it your desktop:
  • Double-click .exe that you downloaded
  • Click rootkit-tab and then scan.
  • Don't check
    Show All
    box while scanning in progress!
  • When scanning is ready, click Copy.
  • This copies log to clipboard
  • Post log (if the log is long, archive it into a zip file and attach instead of posting) in your reply.

Thanks for the logs :)

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully first.

Please continue as follows:

  1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link
    Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

  2. Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New dds log.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Just in case it is important, new quirk is the machine "Freezes". That is, neither the mouse or keyboard will work. Cursor won't move, Esc or Ctrl-Alt-Del have no effect. Seems to happen after the system has been idle for a few minutes.

Hi,

Click start->run and copy-paste following bolded text in the runbox:
control userpasswords2

Is HelpAssistant account visible on the list? If yes, remove it.

Hi,

Print these instructions to be able to follow them while disconnected.

1. Restart your computer
2. Before Windows loads, you will be prompted to choose which Operating System to start
3. Use the up and down arrow key to select Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
4. You must enter which Windows installation to log onto. Type 1 and press enter.
5. At the C:\Windows prompt, type the following bolded text, and press Enter:

cd system32\drivers

6. At the next prompt, type the following bolded text, and press Enter:

copy atapi.sys atapi.sys.vir

7. At the next prompt, type the following bolded text, and press Enter:

When Windows returns back to normal mode upload c:\windows\system32\drivers\atapi.sys.vir file to http://www.virustotal.com and post back the results.
