View Full Version : msvcp60.dll malware?
Hi
Could you please help me search for and delete what appears to be a malicious file - msvcp60.dll? MBAM quarantined this file but I restored it after experiencing boot-up problems. Now the file has gone missing from the location I restored it to without affecting booting of the PC.
I only noticed it missing after I carried out an online PandaActiveScan, which seems to suggest that MBAM had previously been able to track down the file in safe mode because the file was caught off-guard.
Is this a malicious file mimicking the properties of a genuine msvcp60.dll by affecting the boot-up process of the PC when deleted, only to go on the run when restored?
MBAM staff say that such files identified by the scanner appear to be modified.
My MBAM and HJT logs are below.
Thanks.

You can post a DDS log that will provide a closer look. Are you having any signs (http://www.virusvault.us/signs1.html)of malware on your machine?
You can try running System File checker:
http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsXP/howto-24.html
Please download DDS (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr) and save it to your desktop.
Double click dds.scr to run the tool. When done, DDS.txt will open.
Save both reports to your desktop.
Copy/paste both logs in your reply.
Here's the DDS logs....I haven't got my CD so I will try the Registry Editor fix asap. I suppose I took the unexplained vanishing of the said file as the sign of malware, and I have been worried it could be a keylogger.

hi,
I dont recognize any malware. Is your antivirus up to date:
AntiVir Desktop *On-access scanning disabled* (Outdated)
Its possible that a modified (Windows OS file) file was the result of a Windows update.
You can do a online scan for another opinion:
ESET online scanner:
http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/
uses Internet Explorer only
check "YES" to accept terms
click start button
allow the ActiveX component to install
click the start button. the Scanner will update.
check both "Remove found threats" and "Scan unwanted applications"
click scan
when done you can find the scan log at:C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
please copy/paste that log in next reply.
Sorry about the delay; here's the log.....

looks good to me. Did you try System File Checker?
The file in question (msvcp60.dll) should be located @
C:\Windows\System32.
in order for all of the files to show in explorer you can try this first;
on the desktop double click my computer,at the top click on> tools>folder options>view> then select "show hidden files and folders", then UNcheck "hide protected operating system files " also UNcheck "hide extensions for known file types" click apply to all folders, apply then ok
See if that helps finding the file.
I found 4 msvcp60.dll files (Microsoft C+ Runtime Library), average size 400kb, in Safe Mode -
1. C/Windows/system32
2. C/Windows/ServicePackFiles/i386
3. C/Windows/WinS*S/*86_Microsoft_Tools...
4. C/Windows/WinS*S/*86_Microsoft_Tools...
I have tried System File Checker via Registry Editor, but it has not resulted in the replacement of the file. What I know about this file is that it can also be installed by 3rd party applications for their own purposes, and one suggestion has been that I could copy the file from say, System_32, to the location it went missing from. However, since I'm not currently experiencing any OS instability by its absence, maybe its best to leave things as they are for now.
I will continue to scan regularly, and if such a file is identified again I will quarantine it and send a zipped copy to your labs if permissible.

thanks for the info. System file checker would attempt to replace a file only if it found a 'bad corrupt or damaged' protected Windows file. You could if you wanted upload the files to virus total where they would be checked out by running them through many scanners. I agree; if all is well then I would leave as is.
You can delete the DDS file from your desktop.

If all is good: some tips to help you remain malware free:
10 Tips that should help *Reduce and Prevent* your risk To Malware:
1) It is essential to keep your OS (http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us),(Windows) browser (IE, FireFox) and other software up to date to "patch" vulnerabilities that could be exploited. Visit Windows Update frequently or use the auto-update feature. Staying updated is also necessary for web based applications like Java, Adobe Flash/Reader, QuickTime etc. Check there version status here. (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/)
2) Know what you are installing to your computer. Alot of software can come bundled with unwanted add-ons, like adware, toolbars and malware. Do not install any files from ads, popups or random links. Do not fall for fake warnings about virus and trojans being found on your computer and your then prompted to install software to remedy this. Use the Alt+F4 key to close your browser. See also the signs (http://www.virusvault.us/signs1.html)that you may have malware on your computer.
3) Install and keep updated: one antivirus and two or three anti-malware applications. If not updated they will soon be worthless. If these are constantly finding malware on your computer then its time to review your computer habits.
4) Refrain from clicking on links or attachments via E-Mail, IM, IRC, Chat Rooms, Blogs or Social Networking Sites, no matter how tempting or legitimate the message may seem. Do you trust the source?
5) Don't click on ads/pop ups or any offer from websites requesting that you need to install software to your computer--*for any reason.* Use the Alt+f4 key to close your browser.
6) Don't click on offers to "scan" your computer. Install ActiveX Objects with care. Do you trust the website to install components?
7) Set up and use limited (non-privileged) accounts for everyday use, rather than administrator accounts. Limited accounts (http://www.microsoft.com/protect/computer/advanced/useraccount.mspx) can help prevent *malware from installing and lessen its potential impact.*
8) Install and understand the *limitations* of a software firewall.
9) A tool (http://nsslabs.com/general/ie8-hardening-tool.html)for automatically hardening and securing Internet Explorer 8.0. Requires site registration for downloading. Changes some of the default settings of IE 8.0, Read the FAQ's.
10) Warez, cracks etc are very popular for carrying all kinds of malware payloads. Using them will cause you all kinds of problems. If you download/install files via p2p (http://www.virusvault.us/p2p.html) networks then you are also much more likely to encounter malicious code. Do you really trust the source of the file? Do you really need another malware source?

Happy Safe Surfing.
Your help is much appreciated....thank you!
