Hi,
This laptop has acutely slowed, especially long in start-up. Spybot and Norton run with no findings. Here's the HJT log file...have run ERUNT also.
Thank you for your help! David

Hello David

Welcome to Safer Networking.

Please read Before You Post (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)
That said, All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at your own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.

A slow computer is not always the sign of an infection, what we can do is run a few programs to see if some malware is hiding on us, if all comes back clean I can link you to a windows forum that can help sort out your programs and see if there is some sort of conflict.

Make sure that you stick with this thread because this program will disable your CD and DVD drives, we need to re enable them when were done.

Please download DeFogger (http://www.jpshortstuff.247fixes.com/Defogger.exe) to your desktop.
Double click DeFogger to run the tool.

The application window will appear
Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
Click Yes to continue
A 'Finished!' message will appear
Click OK
If it needs to, DeFogger may ask to reboot the machine - click OK

IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your desktop.
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/gmer_zip.gif
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here (http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip) or here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=5198).

Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO.

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii277/sUBs_/th_Gmer_initScan.gif (http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii277/sUBs_/Gmer_initScan.gif)
Click the image to enlarge it

In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
Sections
IAT/EAT
Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
Show All (don't miss this one)

Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.

Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your next reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.

DDS.scr (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr)
DDS.pif (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds)

Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs (http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_your_Security_Programs_t96260.html))
Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
When done, DDS.txt will open.
After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
Save both reports to your desktop.
Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scroling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and then click UPLOAD.

Hi Ken,
Thanks for stepping up. I downloaded these programs to my desktop on the effected computer...ran the defogger, and then started the GMER rootkit scanner after unchecking the boxes you indicated...unfortunately the laptop has been locked up now for over an hour. The mouse does not work, the clock stopped, task manager won't launch to allow stopping program...completely unresponsive. I am amusing that it would not take more than an hour for this scanner to run. The defogger program did not have an error messages.

So, Should I manually power down the laptop by holding down the power button and the restart?

David

Hi Ken,
Ok, I will run the defogger and enable the CD emulation drives. I already have and use ATF cleaner, but will run it again now too.

Do I need to disable Norton again before running the RootRepeal and Malwarebytes?

Nothing bad, as a last resort you can run this free online virus scanner

Please run this free online virus scanner from ESET (http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/)

Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
Click Start
When asked, allow the activex control to install
Click Start
Make sure that the option Remove found threats is ticked, and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
Click Scan
Wait for the scan to finish
Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

Hi Ken,
I downloaded and ran the ESET program. It did not find anything. At the end it asked if I wanted it to remove the program when it closed. I tried to find the log file before i closed the window, but there was none in the folder. Should I download and run again, or is the fact that nothing was found enough?

Also, I guess that opens another question for me. Do I need to unistall all of these programs and executable files when we are done here? If yes, will my Windows program unsitaller be able to do it?

Thanks,
DCP

You can run this tool, whatever it does not remove you can drag to the trash, except Malwarebytes, thats the free version and yours to keep. This is one of the finer programs to come down the pike in quite awhile.

No need for the ESET log as long as you say it came back clean.

Now to remove most of the tools that we have used in fixing your machine:
Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
Download OTC (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTC.exe) to your desktop and run it
A list of tool components used in the cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OTC to reach the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
Click Yes to begin the cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Why don't you post here in there windows forum, they can help you sort out your programs and maybe help speed up your system. Like Safer its a free service but you will need to register.

Dslreports (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10002)

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard, they will conflict with the TeaTimer in Spybot , you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer .

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.

Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.

Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.

IE-Spyad (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23332-order,1-page,1-c,antispywaretools/description.html)
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

Firefox 3 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Safe Surfn

Thank you for all your help Ken. I'll run OTC...I'm asuming I need to disable the Norton again first since it timed out again. I'll have to pursue with the Windows forum once I'm back to regular operation again.

Thanks again,
