I've followed your instructions - I had Spybot 1.3, so have gone to 1.4 now.
I use EzAntivirus ans scanned with it - no virus found.
Spybot 1.4 found no problem either.
When I came here, I had another invitation to subscribe to some programmes - not winfixer this time, something looking like a Microsoft web page, but I doubt if it was.

Here's the HJT log :

Hi

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop. Here's a link:
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/VundoFix.exe
Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
After the files are extracted, please restart your computer into Safe Mode.
Click here if needed (http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx) For instructions.
Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
A command window will open and it should look like this:

VundoFix V2.15 by Atri
By pressing enter you agree that you are using this at your own risk

At this point press enter one time.
Next you will see:

Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, to continue with the fix.

At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqpo.dll

Press Enter.
Next you will see:

Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum staff
At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
C:\WINDOWS\system32\opqss.*
Press Enter to continue.
The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
In HijackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - - (no file)
O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {B313D637-F405-4052-AC37-E2119AB3C8F8} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqpo.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ssqpo - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqpo.dll

After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis.
The fix will tell you to shutdown using the Power button. Hold in your power button until the computer shuts down. Wait about 15 seconds and then restart the computer into regular windows.
Chkdsk will run. This is normal. It will take a few minutes and is checking your file system because of the Bad Shutdown we caused.

Go for free online Virus scans here:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/
Allow them to clean
Panda will have the option to create a log afer the scan has finished. Click the See Report button. Then click the save Report button. It will be saved under the name activescan.txt Do that and post that log into your next reply here.
Go manualy update the sunjava plugin
j2re1.4.2_03 is several builds old
Click download now: http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp
Run hijackthis and post the new log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into as well.

I've had to delete the hijack log to get this down to 1000 characters. I'll send it when I'm allowed to.

One point - the trend housecall scan found "TROJ_ISTBAR.AP" and said it couldn't clean it and it should be deleted manually. However, under that name, Copernic desktop search can't find it and I have searched c:\documents and settings\user manually and I can't find it. Is it in my computer under a different file name ?

Robert.

Hi

Can you manualy delete those files ?
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddccb.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqrq.dll

try bitdefenders online for this item, let it delete the file, no need to have it try to disinfect
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\turbo.inf
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html

That logs looks fine, good work :), are there any current problems ?

Thank you.

I can't find the two dlls by looking in system 32 and when I use Copernic desktop search, it only reports them in activescan.txt.

When I ran bitdefenders, I told it to look in c:\windows\downloaded program files only and it reported no problems were found.

Not very good at finding things this evening !

The only website I've gone to this evening is this one and I had no popups from winfixer.

Next step ?

Robert.

Hi

We can use Killbox on them although this is just cleanup.
Download Pocket Killbox
From one of these loactions
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.exe
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/KillBox.exe
Start Killbox
Copy this whole list into the windows clipboard, all the Bolded below.

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\turbo.inf
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddccb.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqrq.dll

Back in Killbox go > file > paste from clipboard,
Click the red highlighted X button (three times)and say yes to the prompt for each file, on the toolbar go tools delete temp files.

Right, that's done with a successful delete in Killbox for each item, and temp files deleted.

Apart from shutting down system restore and then restarting it, is that it now ?

Robert.

Yes that about it :)

Put in place a good hosts file http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
How To Download and Extract the HOSTS file: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts2.htm
How did that go ?

To help avoid reinfection see "So how did I get infected in the first place?"
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=279

I've done that - no "extract all" on the menu, so I used winzip. There was a hosts file there already, so I've renamed it old and installed the new one.

I'll go through the instructions on not getting reinfected, but I do have settings to allow me to view stationery email. All set up with the instructions on the lettermans site and I think these had been checked with Microsoft.

I'll see how I get on now - and thank you very much indeed !

Robert.
