I would like to thank you in advance for any support you could give me.

Some other things I have noticed that may help: In the last week my anti virus software has flagged several things such as (irsetup.exe was detected and removed automatically), (Suspiciuos.Bredolab was detected and blocked), and This morning while on the internet my virus software (NORTON) popped up and said (Backdoor.Tidserv!inf has been detected. To fully remove a reboot is required.) I clicked the button that said reboot and my machine powered down but while powering up it went to a black screen giving me a choice of booting in safe mode, boot in safe mode with network, boot at a recent restore point, and booting normally. The only one that would work was boot to a recent restore point. The others took me back to the black screen with the boot choices. I haven't turned the machine off since them for fear of not getting it to boot again. In addition I noticed that some new files or folders had been written to my (C:\Documents and Settings\my name\Local Settings\Temp) folder at the same time Backdoor.Tidserv!inf was detected this morning.
Also while running a spybot scan I noticed it really slows down while scanning something called virtumonde.dll and others but shows no problems after completing the scan and immunizing.
My email program (outlook) has stopped working since this morning after norton advised it detected the Backdoor.Tidserv!inf. It gives me a recieve error after hitting the send and receive button so that line of communication is out.
I have problems while using firefox with any google search results trying to redirect me to strange sites as well as not being able to reach the spybot homepage. More times than not my spybot will not update giving me the "error retrieving update file" message. I also seem to be blocked from the WINDOWS LIVE UPDATE site. Firefox times out every time.
I have read the "BEFORE YOU POST" sticky and turned off Tea Timer, backed up my registry with ERUNT and created a HJT log.

Hi,

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds) or here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr) or here (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds).
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
DDS.txt
Attach.txt

Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

Download GMER (http://www.gmer.net) here by clicking download exe -button and then saving it your desktop:
Double-click .exe that you downloaded
Click rootkit-tab and then scan.
Don't check
Show All
box while scanning in progress!
When scanning is ready, click Copy.
This copies log to clipboard
Post log (if the log is long, archive it into a zip file and attach instead of posting) in your reply.

Blade,
Can you tell me what you mean by "disable any script blocker" and what programs I may have that would do this?

Hi,

Having protection software disabled during the run should be enough :)

Blade,
After disabling my anti virus I ran dds and GMER. Here are the 2 logs from dds and 1 from GMER.
Also, I re enabled my anti virus. Let me know if I need to turn it off again. Thanks.

My apologies if I'm going a little slow for ya. I'm just trying to be careful.

Blade,

Her is the Kaspersky report and a fresh dds log. I posted the combofix log in my previous reply unless you needed a third one.

Some Questions, Concerns and Obsevations:

1) I'm not 100% sure I deleted all the necessary Java entries or correctlly installed the newest Java version. It didn't seem like it went exactly as your instructions showed. maybe because I was using firefox? Can you verify I did everything correctly from these logs?

2)I had a brief correspondence with ApluswebMaster from the spybot forums before you started helping me about updates and websites being blocked from me. Here is a link to it just in case you wanted to see what he wrote.
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=55526

3)The last few times I have restarted my computer it has booted up about twice as fast as it has been in the last few months. I think you are making progress.

Sorry to make this so long. I really appreciate all your help.

Mike

Hi,

Check email messages in your accounts under Outlook and delete suspicious looking messages (if found). Some of those Kaspersky email related findings may be false positives.

1) I'm not 100% sure I deleted all the necessary Java entries or correctlly installed the newest Java version. It didn't seem like it went exactly as your instructions showed. maybe because I was using firefox? Can you verify I did everything correctly from these logs?
If you post fresh attach.txt contents that might tell us if there was something wrong or not.

Blade,

I'm checking those emails now. I get mail that norton flags as threats all the time but it always says that it removes the threat. I wonder if I should trust it as much as I do?

Here is the attach.txt log from right after I ran Kaspersky.

Also, some questions:
Blade,

1)It looks like I am now able to reach the windows update site as well as download spybot updates. Should I download updates at this point?

2)Should I be concerned about any removable media re infecting me such as usb memory sticks or camera cards I have been using in the past?

3)After i sent you the Kaspersky report I did the first shutdown - startup and It looks like my desktop theme changed slightly. I noticed the task bar changed from grey to blue. Is this a concern? The boot process also took almost 4 minutes and Norton took till the very end to load. Before this it was taking around 2 minutes to load everything. ???

UNLESS SPECIFICALLY INSTRUCTED, DO NOT POST THIS LOG.
IF REQUESTED, ZIP IT UP & ATTACH IT

Hi Mike,

Seems that these old Javas have to be uninstalled:
Java(TM) 6 Update 2
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 5
Java(TM) 6 Update 7

1)It looks like I am now able to reach the windows update site as well as download spybot updates. Should I download updates at this point?
Let's take a few steps before that.

2)Should I be concerned about any removable media re infecting me such as usb memory sticks or camera cards I have been using in the past?
You could scan your removable medias with Kaspersky for example to see if those have anything that should be cleaned.

Has the Start button color changed too? Norton (older versions at least) is pretty heavy to startup. If it was disabled earlier that could explain slower start.

Blade,
I went thru and deleted all my old emails and backups that I had made of outlook inbox and sent folders and feel pretty confident I got most of what Kaspersky was flagging Except the last 4 entries on the Kaspersky report. I assume you will tell me how to deal with those?

I honestly cant remember if the start button color changed but I know the task bar went from grey to blue. A little while later I changed it back to grey. After looking in my desktop themes I see that the only theme I have that would change the task bar blue is the XP theme but it also changes the background which has never happened, just the bar.

As soon as I finish this post I will uninstall these Javas.

FYI, Haven't tried to download any mail and wont untill you say its ok.

I will standby for any more instructions.

Hi,

Those four items will be removed after system restore is resetted and ComboFix uninstalled. Instructions for this can be found below :)

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

Click START then RUN
Now copy-paste Combofix /uninstall in the runbox and click OK

Please download OTC (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTC.exe) and save it to desktop.

Double-click OTC.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the
Begin cleanup Process?
prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok
Run Secunia vulnerability check here (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/) and fix its findings.

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade

Blade,
Well I did everything you instructed me to:

System restore turn off,turn on.
Uninstall ComboFix.
Ran OTC.
Downloaded all updates for Windows, MS Office, Spybot, Norton, and Installed IE 8.
Re- checked for more updates.
Re-checked for even more updates.
Made your changes to Internet Explorer settings.
You said Host File was "optional" and I did not do that yet.
And last but not least- Ran Secunia vulnerability check.

On the Secunia vulnerability check I selected "enable thorough system inspection" and it took 1 hour 33 minutes and found only 1 program that needed updated. Winzip.

This really surprised me. I thought surely it would find more. It actually made me kind of question its findings a little bit so I started double checking my java and adobe updates you had me install and found that my java was still at version 6 update 17 when I know you said it should have been version 6 update 18. I made the correction and am now at version 6 update 18. I wonder why the Secunia check didn't catch that?

Anyway the laptop seems to be running pretty good so far but here are some concerns, questions and or observations:

1) Laptop got really bogged down during and after the Secunia check to the point that 1 mouse click would take 10-15 seconds to register. It stayed really sluggish for 3-4 hours after and 3-4 boots after finishing Secunia. Gradually the performance got better and is now about where I think is normal for it.

2) IE 8 is really laggy to start up and performance is really slow (compared to firefox) but that doesn't bother me if that is just the way it is since I use firefox.

3) My email (outlook) works again.

4) My system boots time is about 2 minutes 40 seconds and shutdown time is about 40 seconds consistently now:thanks::thanks:.

5)So I'm assuming we are almost finished here. Help me understand and put my paranoid mind at rest. What exactly did we (I mean you) find wrong or fix? This whole thing started for me with norton detecting Backdoor.Tidserv!inf and saying I needed to reboot to rid myself of it, which didn't go well. Was that actually the problem or was there that and more?

I guess I'm needing a little closure so I don't worry about this for the rest of the year.

Very happy customer,
Mike

I made the correction and am now at version 6 update 18. I wonder why the Secunia check didn't catch that?
Because update 18 doesn't contain any security fixes :)

Norton finding was part of infection. There was also DNS changer present. If the infection came while surfing then it's possible some vulnerability in your software (maybe Adobe Reader for example) was exploited.
