I got majorly infected over the weekend, including Vundo. I thought I had removed it all, but I'm still getting pop-ups this morning, though the worst of the stuff is gone. What have I missed?

Hello and welcome to the forum. I can't seee anything of Vundo, it is hard to remove, how did you remove it?

This program: C:\WINDOWS\drempels.exe is it valid, would you post a link to information about it.

You still have junk left, proceed like this:

Move HJT from the Desktop for safety. I prefer C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe, if you need additional instructions use these: http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ac0e4436.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ac0e4436.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ac0e4436.exe] C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\ac0e4436.exe
O16 - DPF: {74CD40EA-EF77-4BAD-808A-B5982DA73F20} - http://yax-download.yazzle.net/Yazzl...cab?refid=1123

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Enable hidden files&folders..reverse the process when finished.
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ac0e4436.exe <<< file

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\ac0e4436.exe <<< file

C:\Windows\Prefetch\ >>> delete the contents (NOT THE FOLDER)
Prefetch info: http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp
Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do.

I would like to look at your uninstall list, please do this:
add/remove in the control panel.
Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Restart the computer and post the uninstall list and a new HJT log along with any comments you think will help. How is the computer running now?

Java just updated to: jre1.5.0_07 http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

Thanks...pskelley

Thanks for the help.

First, Drempels is a program that creates an animated desktop in place of the usual wallpaper. It is perfectly legit.

I removed Vundo (or thought I did) with this:
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/trojan.vundo.removal.tool.html

For whatever reason, HJT won't save the uninstall log when I click the button. It doesn't matter though because I can confirm that nothing on there is remotely suspicious. Right after I made my original post this morning I did another search and wound up removing several things in there. I just checked again and nothing is in there that I haven't personally installed myself.

That said, I did just get a viral popup, so it's not all gone. Here's the new HJT log.

Thanks for the information, the HJT log is clean so whatever is there is hidden. That's why I wanted to know about Vundo, Symantec may or may not have removed it all. Please describe where these popups are directing you. That will give me a better idea (hopefully) of what is still on the computer. Let's take a look at a ewido scan to see what it shows.

First download ewido anti-spyware from HERE (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/) and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
Once you have downloaded ewido anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition files.
On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.

Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
Under "Reports"
Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
Un-Select "Only if threats were found"

Close ewido anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
Lauch ewido-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
Close ewido and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the ewido report scan.

I won't need any other logs right now unless I request them, just the information I asked for, and the results of the ewido scan.

Thanks...Phil

Looks like it's Virtumonde, but it won't die. ewido caught a .dll and quarantined it, but as soon as I rebooted and popped open the browser to post this, I got yet another pop-up.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/VundoFix.exe
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.

After posting that I noticed that it hadn't been able to remove one of the files, presumably because it was in use. I rebooted into safe mode and ran vundofix again. It found three files again and I told it to remove them. It looks like it failed on one of them again, but upon reboot it isn't seeing any more infected files.

Step 1:

Please download Process Explorer by Systernals from:

Process Explorer: http://www.sysinternals.com/Files/ProcessExplorerNT.zip

Also download/unzip KillBox by Option^Explicit from:

Killbox.zip: http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip

Step 2:

Download this file and save it to your desktop:

FixVundo Registry File: www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/spyware/fixvundo.reg

Copy/paste the text in the Quote box below into Notepad, and save it on the desktop as "killme.txt"

QUOTE
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sttss.bak1
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sttss.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sstts.dll

Step 3:

Print out the following instructions as you will not have Internet Access for the rest of this fix.

Reboot to Safe Mode: http://www.service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406?OpenDocument&src=sec_doc_nam

The rest of this fix must be done in safe mode.

Unzip Process Explorer and double click on procexp.exe

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double-click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of:

sstts.dll

once and then click the kill button.

After you have killed all of:

sstts.dll

under winlogon click OK.

If you see any of the files listed below, kill them as well.

Files to look for:
--------------------------
sttss.bak1
sttss.ini

BE SURE TO KILL ONLY THESE FILES!!!
all of them may not be present. That is OK.

Next double-click on explorer.exe, select the Threads tab, and again click once on each instance of:

sstts.dll

then click the kill button.

If you see any of the files listed below kill them as well.

Files to look for:
--------------------------

sttss.bak1
sttss.ini

BE SURE TO KILL ONLY THESE FILES!!!

Probably not all of them will be present. That is OK

Once you have done that click OK again.

Now double-click on the vundo.reg file that you saved on your desktop earlier and allow it to merge with the registry.

Step 4:

On the desktop, open the "killme.txt" file with Notepad.

Then copy the all file names in the "killme.txt" to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing <Ctrl>C (hold the <Ctrl> key down, then press C):

Close "killme.txt".

Double click on Killbox.exe and then check the Delete on reboot button.

In Killbox, click File (in the upper left of Killbox), and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

Click the red dot with the white X in it, in the upper right of Killbox, then click "Yes", and "Yes" again.

Post a new HJT log and let me know if that got rid of the junk.

Thanks...Phil

This seems to have worked. I haven't had any pop-ups since and I get a clean scan from VundoFix, ewido, HJT, Spybot and Adaware. I'll post again if it turns out just to be hibernating, but hopefully you'll never hear from me again. If so, thanks a great deal for your help. I probably would have ended up with a format otherwise.

Thanks is good to hear:bigthumb: One of the reasons the other fix failed was because the creator was working hard to update to a new fix. The hackers move so fast, it can be hard for the software writers to keep up. Well, Atribune released the new version 5.0 today, I used it once already and it worked perfect. This is in case you want to run it to see if it does pick up anything. Your call.

http://www.atribune.org/content/view/24/2/ <<< this is the new version 5.0.

If you feel the need to post another HJT log, I will be glad to scan it, otherwise here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957
http://russelltexas.com/malware/allclear.htm
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=14
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topict2520.html
http://cybercoyote.org/security/not-admin.shtml

ewido is a great program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

Safe surfing...tashi:) will be along to close you within a few days.

Dear god, whoever wrote this thing should be earning big bucks at a major software company. After he/she does 25 years of hard labor in a Siberian prison, of course.

The old version of VundoFix was still showing it clean, but the new one shows the stuff has come right back.

Only thing I see in the log is that Java is still not updated. Since this is how Vundo is probably getting on the computer, you might want to update the program and keep it that way.

Since you did not say if that took care of the issues, this is the next thing Atribune suggests to try. If you no longer have the problem, then do not complete these instructions.
_________________________________________________________
Lets use the add file option in vundofix

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less.
Click OK.
When VundoFix re-opens, Click scan for vundo, when it is finished scanning
Right click the list box then select add files and add
C:\windows\system32\sstts.dll
Click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
Wait two minutes then turn your computer back on.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt

Thanks

If possible, would you upload a copy of that file:
C:\windows\system32\sstts.dll

To here: http://www.uploadmalware.com/

Atribune would like to look at it closer.
