- 5688 this is my brothers toshiba laptop with windows xp, it kept running into problems saying virtual memory is low, ive deleted tons of crap off like aol and yahoo music and google bars.... ive ended up deleting mcaffee, done a defragment, cleaned caches (which he didnt know to do so there was like 5000 things to dump in history and that stuff).
when i open internet explorer it redirects to a few different pages before landing on some junk page thats not the google page i set it to, so there is something there to fix. when i run a spybot scan theres 2 things that it wont get rid of, says its still in use, even when spybot asks do you want to run a scan on next startup it still wont fix. msdirect input i think it was called, 2 instances. any help here?

Hello

Welcome to Safer Networking.

Please read Before You Post (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen. It is advisable that you back up your important data before starting any clean up procedure. Neither Safer Networking Forums nor the Analyst providing the advice may be held responsible for any loss.

Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.

DDS.com (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds)
DDS.scr (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr)
DDS.pif (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds)

Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
Notepad will open with the results, click no to the Optional_Scan
Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.

Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Hi,

Don't install or uninstall any programs until we're done as it just makes the logs we look more confusing

Please download ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up
Please note: If you use online banking or are registered online with any other organizations, ensure you have memorized password and other personal information as removing cookies will temporarily disable the auto-log in facility.

Please download Malwarebytes from Here (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php) or Here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html)

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
http://forums.whatthetech.com/post_a4255_MBAM.PNG
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Post the report please

Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here (http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe) and save it to your desktop.
Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Hi,

Nothing bad.

C:\Program Files\LimeWire <--Using File Sharing sites like this and the Torrents are going to get you into trouble, your downloading that file from an unknown source and malware writers are taking advantage of this.

The Items you removed with HJT on your own are legit, why did you remove them ?

Looks like you feel installing Kodak software is more important than Anti Virus software, why did you uninstall McAfee ?

Install One AV and One Firewall

Free Anti Virus Programs

AVG Free (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/avg-anti-virus-free/lng/us/tpl/v5)
Free Avast 4 Home Edition (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html)
Avira AntiVirŪ Personal Edition Classic (http://www.free-av.com/)

Free Firewalls

Zone Alarm (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,7228,00.asp)
Sygate Personal Firewall Free Edition (http://www.filehippo.com/download_sygate_personal_firewall/[/url])
Outpost Firewall Free (http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpostfree/index.php)

I have to tell you, you have removed so much on your own I have no idea what you have done that may have added to this problem.

Please run this free online virus scanner from ESET (http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/)

Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
Click Start
When asked, allow the activex control to install
Click Start
Make sure that the option Remove found threats is ticked, and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
Click Scan
Wait for the scan to finish
Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

How are things running now ??

this is my bros laptop, not my computer, the limewire is from when his old girlfriend used it years ago, shes long gone now. is limewire completely off the laptop now?
the kodak stuff he installed himself while waiting for me to clean stuff up for him.
the antivirus thing was out of date from what i think was years and years back and was also using so much virtual memory the comp wouldnt work with it going.
he has been using the laptop for years all full of junk till the thing just wouldnt work any more.
just a couple questions, is there anything else i can remove in the hijack this to speed up the comp, in remove programs aol is still there although when i try removing it says nothing is there?
should i just try using the security center firewall in windows xp instead of downloading another?

Try installing AVG, its not a resource hog. As far as windows firewall, it just blocks incoming threats and not out going, ZoneAlarm is a nice one and will block both incoming and outgoing.

This forum is for removing malware only, run ESET and lets see what it finds and if nothing I will direct you to a windows forum that can help you sort out your programs.

eset found nothing, avg is now installed and updated, ran a scan it found nothing, ran another scan with spybot and those 2 things are still there and it just wont get rid of it even on reboot. when the comp starts it still shows a prompt for the 2 keys functions and toshiba still wont update correctly, it still says its updated 102% and doesnt work. i gave his laptop back to em and he says its slower than before, but its just cause the antivirus takes up memory. anything else i can try to delete these dang things spybot cant?

Try this for Virtual Memory
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2089076,00.asp

Go to Start> Run and type in services.msc then press Enter
Scroll down to Swupdtmr
Double Click that service to open it.
Make sure its set to Automatic
OK your way out of the program.

What two items are Spybot not removing ?

Are your searches still being redirected to other sites ?
