View Full Version : Slightly weird SD card-related behaviour

Hi,

I can't really claim to have noticed any type of "proper" malware behaviour, but as I've recently become a bit paranoid after noticing an obscure ZoneAlarm problem (sometimes starting two minutes too late because of some incompatibility, probably, but at least behind a router within a network that shouldn't be particularly harmful), I'd like to find out what is up with this strange phenomenon I've noticed when inserting (any) SD cards:

I should add that all of these cards appear to be free of viruses as indicated both by avast on this system and Kaspersky Internet Security on another system. autorun for the SD cards (i.e. opening Windows Explorer to show the contents) usually works fine, but in one case, when I wanted to transport an installation file from one system to another by SD card, I noticed that Autorun wouldn't start.

After trying around a bit, I noticed that any .exe file placed in the card's root directory featuring the word "setup" anywhere in its name, be it a file called setup.exe or one called, say, 123setuptest456.exe (even just an empty text file renamed to setup.exe), would result in no Autorun appearing at all despite the lack of an autorun.ini file. I assume something somewhere on my system uses this as a type of protection; however, it just seems like such a strange and simple type of protection that I wanted to ask whether this might be a genuine option/feature of any program/Windows itself or maybe something else? It doesn't seem to make a difference whether avast is activated or not, and the only other security program running all the time is ZoneAlarm. Recent avast, Spybot S&D and TrendMicro HouseCall tests didn't bring up anything weird.

Here's the constellation of forms of autorun behaviour:

formatted card with setup.exe in the root: no autorun
random test.exe in the root (on its own as well as alongside a random new folder): Windows Explorer showing the card's content
setup.exe and random bitmap file in the root: autorun choice menu
setup.exe and random new folder in the root: no autorun

All in all, it's a nice reminder that disabling autorun generally is a good idea, but still, I'd first like to find out what this is about. Thanks for any help!

Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

1 - download and run RSIT

Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here (http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe) and save it to your desktop.
Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt<- (will be maximized) and info.txt<- (will be minimized)

2 - Status Check
Please reply with

1.the logs from RSIT (log.txt ,info.txt)

Hi Agate Scape

1 - Download and Run ComboFix

We will continue with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
If you need help to disable your protection programs see here. (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)

When finished, it will produce a log for you
Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

2 - Status Check
Please reply with

1. the ComboFix log(C:\ComboFix.txt)

Thanks peku006

Hi! I'm very grateful for your help, but before proceeding I have a few questions --
1. is there anything specific in the logs that makes you think I should use combofix now, or is it just a means of getting further info after not finding any in these logs? I.e., what's the status?
2. Is ZoneAlarm known to interfer with ComboFix? They advise to disable Firewalls as well, but I have to admit I'm not comfortable at all with that, considering this will leave the system unprotected for more than just a short bit.
(3. This is one that might be just based on guessing, or may not allow any other answer than guesses, so feel free to ignore the question: the log lists one registry entry referring to autorun settings and a F:\setup.exe file. I presume this might have to do with my "issue", and while it's a bit mysterious, I wouldn't be surprised if it's related to Western Digital external HD standard autorun behaviour. Any opinion on that?)

I hope you don't mind me posing these questions before proceeding, I feel a bit lost with this and don't want to risk too much (i.e. disabling the firewall etc.) just based on my own malware paranoia :)

Thanks for the reply (and sorry for my delay in replying)! I think in that case, I'll wait until I'm in a trustworthy network again in a few weeks, I just don't want the firewall to be turned of all that long here and, fortunately, I'm not all that reliant on that particular laptop right now. I realise the thread may be archived; should I start a new one once I've proceeded with ComboFix?
