View Full Version : AntiVirus Soft

My computer is infected with AntiVirus Soft. Norton 360 only found trojan.ByteVerify and quarantined it, but Spybot found Fraud.Sysguard, which I "fixed".

The warnings keep popping up, and I am now using Safe Mode with Networking to post this and to try removal options. Based on instructions I found on the Symantec website, I have already turned off System Restore (sorry), and have used regedit to look for the changes in the registry, but have not been able to find the ones I was looking for.

I have run ERUNT, and have downloaded HJT, but when I try to install it, I get a warning that the Administrator has set policies to prevent installation. I am logged in as Administrator in Safe Mode, but am not sure how to correct this (perhaps it is the malware preventing installation?).

My system is running Windows XP SP3.

Thanks for any help you can offer.
Mike

Hello Mike,

Been at this for many years and I can't tell you how many people have posted back and said they resolved there issue only to find out it was still present.

The absence of symptoms does not guarantee a clean system.

I would run RootRepeal and post the log and also this other program.

Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here (http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe) and save it to your desktop.
Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

This is of course your decision , if I don't hear back from you in 3 days then I will close this thread.

Ken :)

Hello Mike,

Nothing really bad , but a few things to fix

C:\Program Files\Pando Networks <-- Any form of P2P File Sharing programs or sites are dangerous, your downloading that file from an unknown source, malware writers know this and are using it to try and infect your computer. You should stay away from programs like Limewire and any of the Torrents.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} (PopCapLoader Object) - http://zone.msn.com/bingame/popcaploader_v10.cab

The rest of your log looks fine.

Ken,

Thanks for your help. I have taken the actions you recommenced.

Thank you for pointing out the portential problems with Pando. I had thought it was just something that a game or perhaps Netflix or Pandora needed, but I have turned it off in the Control Panel for now to see if there is any effect.

Mike,

Turning Pando off won't effect much, I was much more concerned with you downloading files with it.

Here are two free programs for you to use. This one will get rid of temp files and such and may speed up your system a bit

Please download ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up
Please note: If you use online banking or are registered online with any other organizations, ensure you have memorized password and other personal information as removing cookies will temporarily disable the auto-login facility.

As a final check, run Malwarebytes, this is one of the best programs to come along in awhile, its the free version and yours to keep

Please download Malwarebytes from Here (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php) or Here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html)

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
http://forums.whatthetech.com/post_a4255_MBAM.PNG
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Post the report and also a new HJT log please

Ken,

Here is the information you requested. I was surprised to see so many infection notices after the other actions we have taken, but I'm clearly not an expert.

Good Morning Mike,

What Malwarebytes found where just leftover registry entries, not an actual infection, but they where put there by malware.

PopCapLoader Object <--This was one of the culprits, you should stay away from any games by popcap

Ask Toolbar <--You have this installed, not really malware but it does track your surfing and brings adds , your call to remove it or not. It can be removed via Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel

The rest of your log looks just fine :bigthumb:

Lets update your Java to make your system more secure

Go to your Control Panel and click on the Java Icon ( looks like a little coffee cup ) click on About and you should have Version 6 Update 18, if not proceed with the instructions.

Download the latest version Here (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) save it, do not install it yet.

Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE)JRE 6 Update 18 <--The wording is confusing but this is what you need

Go to your Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java
Reboot your computer
Install the latest version

You can verify the installation Here (http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml)

How did I get infected in the first place ?
Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard, they will conflict with the TeaTimer in Spybot , you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer .

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.

Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.

Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.

IE-Spyad (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23332-order,1-page,1-c,antispywaretools/description.html)
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

Firefox 3 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Safe Surfn
Ken
