View Full Version : Insufficient Resources exist to complete requested service

My XP computer with service pack-3 is reporting "Insufficient Resources exist to complete requested service". This occurs every few days, if I do not reboot. Once it occurs the computer will not run any programs. If I stop all running applications, I can run the task manager, but it is not obvious that any process has consumed the resources. Computer is OK after a reboot for about 24 hours.

Not sure if the problem results from malware or not. There are know problems with XP having a similar problems when entering hibernation mode for XP configurations prior to service pack-2. However hibernation is disabled and service pack-3 is installed.

The system event viewer is loaded with the following reoccurring error:
DCOM was unable to communicate with the computer ROGER-DESKTOP using any of the configured protocols.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Have you checked the DCOM service status in the services panel.
should be Service Status; started
Startup type; automatic

Yes the DCOM service is active. I determined that the error "DCOM was unable to communicate with the computer ROGER-DESKTOP using any of the configured protocols." results when a network printer on another computer is turned off. However I get "Unable to start a DCOM Server: {5A5AA0AA-1DEB-4683-96B0-B43301E83971}. The error: "Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service. " Happened while starting this command: C:\WINDOWS\system32\HPBPRO.EXE -Embedding" prior to rebooting the computer once the problem occurs.

Thanks,
Roger

Have you checked HP for updated drivers or checked there website for possible causes/solutions:
here (http://search.hp.com/query.html?charset=iso-8859-1&lk=1&la=en&nh=10&rf=0&qs=&hpvc=sitewide&uf=1&st=1&qt=DCOM+and+HPBPRO.EXE+&submitsearch.x=5&submitsearch.y=9)

I am not sure I communicated the problem correctly. After the computer runs for 24-48 hours certain resources are depleted and when I try to initiate a new program or other action, I get the error “Insufficient Resources exist to complete requested service". I get this error on the screen with any requested action. The problem is temporarily resolved by rebooting the computer.

If I stop all running programs and exit the resident programs, sometimes I can free up enough resources (memory I think) to run the task manager. The problem program is not obvious by looking at the task manager display.

When trying to debug the problem myself, I noted the large amount of DCOM entries in the system event log and originally thought it might be related. i.e. perhaps that many entries was depleting resources. Since that time I isolated and resolved the DCOM entries, but the original problem, “Insufficient Resources exist to complete requested service” occurs when I try to run any program (i.e. word, internet explorer, firefox, etc.)

you communicated it right. I just didnt re-read it. How much RAM do you have installed? How much free space left on the hard drive? Process Explorer might come in handy for tracking whatever it is that is chewing up memory and/or cpu cycles. Have you installed any new software lately?

In response to your questions:
1-the machine has 2 GB Memory
2-the disk has 213 GB of free space
3-No new software; just Microsoft updates, spybot updates, Real Estate MLS updates and Real Estate Forms updates.

I had a similar problem when the machine was new and I resolved the issues by disabling NMindexStoreSvr at startup using MSCONFIG. I notice that even though it is still disabled through MSCONFIG that "NMIndexingService" shows up in the Hijack this log file. Could this be related?

I installed the PE software.

Thanks,

dosnt look like not having enough RAM or hard drive space is a issue.

by disabling NMindexStoreSvr
may as well since it looks like there is no clear culprit.

thats a nero service, rather than disabling with MSCONFIG see if this
link (http://searchtasks.answersthatwork.com/tasklist.php?File=NMIndexingService) helps. The article appears to be a few years old. No doubt the software has changed so the instructions in the article may be slightly different.
If you cant do it from within the software then we can disable it in the services panel.

The procedure in the link was not appropriate for my version. No icon in the tray. I tried enabling with MSCONFIG and sill no icon. At this point NMIndexingService.exe is disabled again with MSCONFIG.

I changed NMindexStoreSvr from Manual to Disable in the Computer Management Services panel.

ok and iam guessing things are no better?

roger.f
2010-03-16, 08:51
Your guess is correct, we have not eliminated the problem.

We disabled the the NMindexStoreSvr which is good. How would I find out how to completely eliminate it and other such programs?

Thanks!

how to completely eliminate it
since its part of Nero you would have to remove nero via the add/remove programs panel. You could also click the icons by the clock and look for options within any software thats running not to start with Windows. To completely remove something you would have to use the add/remove programs panel to uninstall the software.
Download DDS and post its log please:

Please download DDS (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr) and save it to your desktop.
Double click dds.scr to run the tool. When done, DDS.txt will open.
Save both reports to your desktop.
Please Copy/paste both logs in your reply.

I think this is software related, iam thinking memory leak? I could be 100% wrong though.
Have you tried updating software, other than Microsoft that is. I assume you visit or have auto-updates turned on for that.
Short of uninstalling software one by one all i can think of is updating the software. I would think it would have to be something that is running in real time, visible by a icon near the clock or something running in the background showing in task manager like your scanner software, Nero, HP etc. Vendors release patches and updates to fix problems but again iam assuming its software related.
You could try uninstalling software one by one, reboot, wait and see if things improve. If you uninstall AVG get another antivirus so your not without AV. If you have any purchased software that came with a key or license code make sure you have that when you re-install the software.
Thats all i got.

I will go through each software product and make sure it is updated. Is there a way to monitor the memory usage. Perhaps it makes sense to look at memory usage after boot and then again after the failure occurs. Is there a way to look at the links in where the dynamic memory pool is stored and see which program that memory is allocated to? Does a program exist that will go through the dynamic memory pool and look for broken links or missing memory blocks etc.? If this does not look like malware should I be posting somewhere else?

I dont recognize any malware in the logs, usually malware will have signs (http://www.virusvault.us/signs.html) that a user will notice.
We can get another scanner as a check for potential malware before assuming its not related. Your AVG 8.0 is still being updated? There is a new 9.0 version out.

Please download Malwarebytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php) to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.

Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.

If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.

Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

Be sure that everything is checked, and click *Remove Selected.*

*A restart of your computer may be required to remove some items. If prompted please restart your computer to complete the fix.*
The free version must be updated manually and a scan started manually.
