Hello and welcome to the forums here at Spybot S&D.

Identity Theft

It looks like you have been infected by a few Backdoor Trojans.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

Its very possible that anything could have been installed on your computer by the remote attacker, including opening other backdoors and installing rootkits. While we can attempt to clean what we see in your logs, we cannot guarantee that your computer will be completely in the clear since we have no way of knowing that has been done to the computer. Your computer could be completely compromised at this moment. It may be prudent to backup your information, reformat, and reinstall.

More information on Remote Access Trojans can be found here (http://antivirus.about.com/library/weekly/aa100400a.htm).

I suggest you do the following immediately:

Call all of your banks, credit card companies, financial institutions and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.
From a clean computer, change *all* your online passwords -- for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.
DO NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passwords and transaction information.

If, however, you decide that the computer is not used for any sensitive work, or if you do not wish to reformat at this time, I can help you clean your computer to the best of my abilities. I must remind you that i cannot guarantee that your computer will be completely clean afterwards since we have no way of knowing what has been done to it.

To help you make your decision, here are a few related articles that i suggest you read:

Danger: Remote Access Trojans. (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/alerts/info/virusrat.mspx)
When should I re-format? How should I reinstall? (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063)
How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and Credit Card Fraud? (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451)

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let me know what you decide to do in your next post.

thanks for such a prompt response.

Ahhh - it all seems a bit scary. I have decided to reformat/install - how do I go about this? I have read through the linked pages that you sent but I don't have a disc to reinstall my operating system.

Also, if I plug in my external hard drive to save files from my infected laptop will this infect my external hard drive?

Where did you get the PC? What's the model? It may have a hidden recovery partition as many of the mfgs. like Dell and Gateway provide that for a restore. When it first boots what options do you see for the F keys. (ie. F12 to restore, etc...).

You shouldn't have issues transferring files to the backup drive. As long as you don't move anything that is infected over, which your personal files and such should not be in this case. You should also run Flash Disinfector to make sure.

Download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs from here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/Flash_Disinfector.exe) and save it to your desktop.

Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
Reboot your computer when done.

Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you run it. Don't delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection.

Hi,

Its a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop. When it starts up there is a F12 MultiBoot Selection Menu option.

I have moved all my files/documents off the laptop and am ready to reformat.

Thanks.

Within the menu after pressing F12 there should be something that says "Dell Factory Image Restore", or similar. Do you see something like that? That should put everything back to when you bought the PC. You will need to re-install all of your programs, and restore your data that you backed up after.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
