View Full Version : Browser hijacks from winantivirus & friends

Hey guys, I'm new here but willing to learn so please bear with me.

Getting windows prompts that if I do anything short of ignoring them in the background take me to the winantivirus, drivecleaner etc.

I have always used Norton and adaware w/ VX2 plugin. After I ran spybot it found much more. I was really happy (thanks!) but it did not find what I was hoping it would and think I need advanced help with this one.
UPDATE:Text is too long, making a two parter.

Here we go:

Part two,

Panda scan:

Incident Status Location
Adware:adware/ist.istbar Not disinfected c:\program files\gmsoft Adware:adware/dluxde Not disinfected Windows Registry Potentially unwanted tool:Application/Processor Not disinfected C:\Battle of Britain II\Process.exe

I had to drop the report on cookies, which strangely were not detected by any other scanner, to fit the report.

Thanks in advance, have a good one.

Hello and welcome to the forum. This is the Vundo trojan and it has been tough to remove. I think the hackers are changing it faster than updates to the fix? It is rumored this gets in via an unpatched Java program, but I see you are up to date. Could it be you updated after getting infected.

Before we start, you are running MSConfig in Selective Startup mode. I have no way of knowing what may be turned off. Change MSConfig to normal mode for the balance of this fix than you may return to SS to save resources.

Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix

VundoFix.exe is a removal tool developed to remove Virtumonde infections. To use the tool follow the instrctions below.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/VundoFix.exe
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
Turn your computer back on.

post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HJT log along with your comments.

Thanks...pskelley

Thanks for the quick reply,

Yes, it is most likely that I encountered the infection before updating java. Until I decided to commit to fighting this I relied on the auto update, out of my own ignorance, and it was a little out of date.
SS disabled.

VundoFix caught a fish! Hope it's the one.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. I will post this link for you:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2 It seems to be common knowledge that the auto updater has been bug filled and iffy and yet hackers know they can infect computers through systems with unpatched Java. Many suggest turning it off, but if you do you need to check it for updates often, but that is true of all programs.

We were in luck, Atribune updated to 5.0 today and you used the newest VundoFix and it seems it worked perfectly.

Let's do a little cleaning as we remove the remnants of Vundo.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {c12c4ada-55a4-41c8-b6b1-16bb49872475} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\distil.dll (file missing)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Enable hidden files&folders..reverse the process when finished.
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Windows\Prefetch\ >>> delete the contents (NOT THE FOLDER)
Prefetch info: http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

If you don't have a good cleaner, use this free one with these instructions:
Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp
Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do.

Return to Selective Startup to save your resources now if you wish.

Since you only had that one dead line I will post closing information for you now and there is no need to post again unless you wish.

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

Safe surfing...tashi:) will close you in a few days.

Thanks...pskelley
