hi,
I'm worried I might have a keylogger or some kind of trojan, as someone appears to have got hold of our login details for various websites

Open HijackThis.
Click on the Open the Misc Tools section button.
Look under System tools.
Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
Click on the Save list... button.
It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply.

thought I'd take this opportunity to add something I realised I forgot to mention before; between us we use 2 different laptops, so if there is a keylogger on one it could be either.
We posted a separate thread under a different user name from the other laptop, which shaba has recently responded to.

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer
TeaTimer can be re-enabled once the computer is clean.
1. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
2. If it is not already set to do this go to the "Mode" menu and select "Advanced Mode".
3. On the left hand side, click on "Tools".
4. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List.
5. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
6. Restart your computer.
Vista Advice:
All applications I ask to be used will require to be run in Administrator mode. IE: Right click on and select Run as Administrator.
The Operating System(Vista aka Windows 6) in use comes with a inbuilt utility called User Access Control(UAC).
When prompted by this with anything I ask you to do carry out please select the option Allow.
Next.
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
You may have this installed already but it's not listed in your uninstall list.
If you still have it installed skip to the instructions for updating and running it.
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) and save to your desktop.
Right-click mbam-setup.exe And select " Run as administrator " then follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... and click Remove Selected.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log back into your next reply

RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)
Please download RSIT (http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe) by random/random... and save it to your desktop.
Right click on RSIT.exe and select "Run As Administrator" to run it. If Windows UAC prompts you, please allow it.
Please read the disclaimer... click on Continue.
RSIT will start running. When done... 2 logs files...will be produced.
The first one, "log.txt", << will be maximized
The second one, "info.txt", << will be minimized.
Please post both... "log.txt" and "info.txt", file contents in your next reply.
(These logs can be lengthy, so post 1 log per reply please.)

thought I'd take this opportunity to add something I realised I forgot to mention before; between us we use 2 different laptops, so if there is a keylogger on one it could be either.
We posted a separate thread under a different user name from the other laptop, which shaba has recently responded to.

ok, I think I have an old version of Malwarebites anti malware (1.22), but its telling me that it isn't being allowed access to the internet when I try to update it - will this affect the scan? I thought I'd ask before trying it.
As for the laptop's performance, it pretty much works fine, which is the confusing thing. The only problem is that it regularly disconnects me from the internet (note - the laptop is still connected to the network but not the internet, and none of the other computers on the network have this problem) but I just put this down to a hardware problem.
the reason we thought that this laptop had the malware on was because this is pretty much the only one that we have been using lately - my two housemates broke their wireless adaptors and my girlfriends laptop has such poor performance she just uses this one now. The only symptom we found was that someone had got hold of some of her passwords and gained access to various accounts. We can be certain that it wasn't anyone who had physical access to the computers (i.e. our housemates), and someone appeared to be using her facebook account from a remote location whilst she was signed in - her laptop was off and was using mine at the time, and she hadn't used anyone elses computer to log in.

I think I have an old version of Malwarebites anti malware (1.22), but its telling me that it isn't being allowed access to the internet when I try to update it - will this affect the scan? I thought I'd ask before trying it.

I see you have Punkbuster (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PunkBuster) installed.( read the section on Published features) This is spyware. Punkbuster can take control over various aspects of your computer, and some gaming tools not unlike Punkbuster also hinder their removals. By the definition we handle here, Punkbuster is actual spyware. Therefore, I now ask you to decide the following:
Either we try to leave Punkbuster alone but there is no guarantee a spyware component doesn't 'accidentally' get taken out; so Punkbuster might break. This will, of course, also break your ability to play games using Punkbuster enabled servers.
Or we can just remove Punkbuster. You can reinstall it afterwards if you wish, but please keep in mind that It is spyware.
Another option is to not clean this computer at all. This ensures Punkbuster will continue to function.
Please let me know what you would like to do.
Fix HijackThis entries
Run HijackThis
If using Vista, you must right click (hijackthis.exe) and choose "Run As Administrator".
If you are on the Main Menu page... Click "Do a system scan only"
If you are on the "scan & fix stuff" page... Press the Scan...button.
When the scan finishes...Place a check mark next to the following entries (if they are still present)
Note: Only check those items listed below.

Back Up registry with ERUNT
Please use the following link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it on to your desktop. HERE (http://www.derfisch.de/lars/erunt-setup.exe)
Right-Click on the erunt-setup.exe And select " Run as administrator " to run it. If Windows UAC prompts you, please allow it.
Follow the prompts to install ERUNT
Choose language
A set up window will pop up. It will ask: Create ERUNT entry in to the Start up folder, answer NO

first off, lets remove punkbuster - i installed it about 3 years ago to play america's army, which I haven't played since then.
can i just ask - what was i "moving" with OTM? was I just clearing the temporary files?
laptop still performing ok, it froze for a few minutes while OTM was running but i guess this was just because it was hard at work?

It was cleaning temp files and a malware related reg key ;)

Ok lets remove punkbuster for you do a few up updates then i would like you to run an online scan.
Uninstall PunkBuster
Please download PBSVC Setup Program (http://www.evenbalance.com/downloads/pbsvc/pbsvc.exe). Save it to your desktop.
Right click on pbsvc.exe And select " Run as administrator " to start it... then click Uninstall.
Once that's finished...
Click on Start > All programs > Accessories > Run. and copy and paste the following into the open text box:
cmd /c for %i in (A B K) do sc delete PnkBstr%i
Click OK. A black box will flash very briefly, this is normal.
Double click My Computer on your desktop and browse to C:\windows\system32\drivers
Locate the file: PnkBstrK.sys... if found delete it.
Now please reboot your system.

No please leave teatimer disabled until i give you the all clear.

looks like it found virtumonde. I had that little sod about 2 years ago and thought i'd seen the back of it - took ages to get rid of it!!! disconnecting laptop from the network now - will check back from a different machine

Run HijackThis
If using Vista, you must right click (hijackthis.exe) and choose "Run As Administrator".
If you are on the Main Menu page... Click "Do a system scan only"
If you are on the "scan & fix stuff" page... Press the Scan...button.
When the scan finishes...Place a check mark next to the following entries (if they are still present)
Note: Only check those items listed below.

as before, still no noticeable symptoms really. The network/internet problem still persists, and the connection seems to be getting more temperamental but again I'm putting this down to a hardware problem.

Hi joe.
The good news is i can see no evidence of a keylogger on your system.
As to how someone gained access to login details of the sites you visit i can't tell.
If passwords are not strong they can be guessed if say they are birthdays or such.
I would advise you to change all your details at the sites you use and change such things as your security questions.

This is my general post for when your logs show no more signs of malware.
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Clean up with OTM
Double-click OTM.exe to start the program, This tool will remove all the tools we used to clean your pc.
Close all other programs apart from OTMoveIt3 as this step will require a reboot
On the OTM main screen, press the CleanUp! button
Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.
You can now delete any tools we used if they remain on your Desktop.
Create a new, clean System Restore point
Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >>System Tools >> System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close
Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start >> Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm
Protection Programs
Don't forget to re-enable any protection programs we disabled during your fix.

SiteAdvisor is a toolbar for Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox which alerts you if you're about to enter a potentially dangerous website.

MVPS Hosts
Install MVPS Hosts File From Here (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm)
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer

only one question -
how did otm know which files to "clean up"? will it have un-done the updates of java and adobe we did too?

No the OTM cleanup only deletes the tools we used and the logs they created from your PC.
It wouldn't have undid the updates to java or adobe :)
