View Full Version : Can't run any .exe

I'm writing for my parents whose computer has become infected. They're not able to run any executables. The Symantec Corporate Client I'd installed on it also seems to not be running.

Mom can run a browser and get online. I had her download ERUNT but she can't execute it. Her machine is running Vista. When she tries to run the setup for ERUNT she gets a Vista prompt asking her permission. But, after she clicks continue nothing happens.

Had her try to run a Symantec scan but though the Symantec antivirus client launches, when she clicks on scan she gets a message that the program is infected.

I'm trying to get things done for her remotely - we're in 2 separate cities 300 miles apart. I'd installed TeamViewer5 on her machine so I could get in remotely 2 months back, tested it and it worked fine.

Now when she tries to lauch it she gets the message that it's infected. She tried uninstalling it, but got the message the executable wasn't there any more and even after selecting that all its files should be removed gets an error message. Teamviewer5 still appears in her installed programs list in the Control Panel.

Its harder for me to work on her machine also because I have XP on mine, and don't really know Vista.

I'm afraid of running HJT without first saving the registry. Besides, since even ERUNT won't install I don't know if HJT will.

Please help me to help her! I can have her post things directly, but first need help getting her machine to where she can run the programs to be able to post logs!

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide!
-----------------------
Update: Mom was able to run ERUNT under safe mode, but still can't run the Symantec anti-virus program.

HJT website doesn't list Vista so what should be used to post the log for this forum/ for your help?

Another thing noted was that when her computer is running in normal mode, she gets a lot of windows popping up telling her that her that there was a virus found, so many that she can't get anything done. Under Safe mode, all those windows did not come up.

Hello,

Please download exeHelper (http://www.raktor.net/exeHelper/exeHelper.com) to your desktop.
Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
Post the contents of log.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com)
Note: If the window shows a message that says Error deleting file, please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds) or here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr) or here (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds).
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
DDS.txt
Attach.txt

Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

Download GMER (http://www.gmer.net) here by clicking download exe -button and then saving it your desktop:
Double-click .exe that you downloaded
Click rootkit-tab and then scan.
Don't check
Show All
box while scanning in progress!
When scanning is ready, click Copy.
This copies log to clipboard
Post log (if the log is long, archive it into a zip file and attach instead of posting) in your reply.

Blade81,

Thank you for responding; I REALLY appreciate the obvious amount of time you've taken to provide these first steps.

I have one question if you don't mind. This is for my parents' computer and I will be helping my Mom remotely to get her through these steps, which could be a challenge. I know that following your guidance is the best thing for getting rid of the virus and making sure everything else is clean!

However, my parents found out about a free virus removal service Microsoft has put in place. It only requires their going to http://safety.live.com and running a Full Service scan or just a malware removal (Protection) scan. I don't really trust Microsoft but in this instance running this online scan/ cleanup seems to be a less painful process for my Mom and I to tackle.

Would you recommend our trying that first, and then following your guidance to make sure nothing's been left out (or added)by Microsoft, or going straight to the steps you're recommending?

I very much value your guidance in this and your time!

Hi,

You could try that first if the site can be accessed :)

Please follow those steps in my previous post after that anyway.

Hi Blade81,

They are no longer able to get onto the internet. They used to be able to enter safemode and get on, but now they can't get into safe mode either!!

Also, when I clicked on the link for exeHelper it first triggered a Virus alert from my Symantec Antivirus (on my machine not my parents). Now when I try to go to that site it does not have a file anymore.

What should we do??

Hi Blade81,

Ok, so I had my Mom poke around a bit and this is where things stand:

A friend of my parents' tried using cc clean (? by Google) but that couldn't get rid of the virus. That effort changed many things in the configuration.

Mom has figured out how to get into Safe Mode again.

She is able to get on the internet in normal mode under another admin ID but cannot run the Microsoft online virus remover because ActiveX is not installed/ enabled and we don't know how to do that.

I have asked her not to let anyone else run anything else on the computer so we can get it properly cleaned with your assistance!

We will try to run your fix and go through your directions. I will post the log later tonight, hopefully.

Thank you for you patience and continued guidance!

Hi Blade81,

I'm posting the logs from exeHelper and dds.scr. GMER had runtime errors which seemed to cause major Windows problems; Vista shut it down and did not allow access to save a copy of its log.

I'll wait for your next steps.

Thank you again in advance for your help!

Hi,

It would be better if no other cleaning attempts were made outside of instructions given here. Otherwise it'll be really difficult for me to stay on track.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully first.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New dds log.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Hi Blade81,

I'm concerned about the warning you've given about ComboFix. I haven't tried to run it yet and WILL definitely read through the full guide carefully before trying to run it. But in your warning, written in red, are you saying that some damage has already been caused to their machine?

Here is some history on what was encountered while running your previous directions:

Windows had generated an error while runnig GMER and forced the program to close. Note: as advised by the GMER download site it WAS saved and run under a different name, not as GMER.exe. The messages generated were:

"Windows is collecting information about the problems; it might take several minutes."
"A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

Mom could not access the GMER screen to Copy the log.
Clicking the Close button on the windows error message then closed the GMER window.

After these errors, the system became REALLY slow. She tried a few times to launch Firefox and Task Manager but the computer seemed non-responsive. Finally when Task Manager came up, there were 4 copies of Firefox showing, all of them with the message that it is not responding. She tried to close each Firefox window normally and waited several minutes for that to happen, but they did not close.

After about 10 minutes had passed I had her do <End Process> on all copies of Firefox - Windows was still REALLY slow. She could not access the Start button to try to Shutdown or Restart; CTRL-Alt-Del was not working either. So she had to do a hard stop by holding down the power button.

From the time Windows generated the error for GMER to when Mom had to do a hard shutdown took over one hour and 20 minutes!

I had her restart the computer afterwards and email me the exeHelper, DDS and Attach logs I posted in my previous post. After this she did a normal Shutdown. (It was after 1 am and she had been working on this for close to 3 hours straight. She's 73 years old and was exhausted!).

At this point now her computer is turned off.

Are you able to help with identifying all of the anti-virus, anti-malware programs on their machine?

I had installed the Symantec Corporate Client and know how to disable its real-time protection. But, I don't know all the programs their friend installed and tried running when he was trying to help them clear out the virus. The only one I know of for certain is CC Clean, which he'd told me only runs on-demand.

I am REALLY afraid of causing harm by running ComboFix without being able to identify and remove all of the anti-virus, anti-malware, anti-spyware programs that may be on their machine at this point.

In looking at the logs (and not understanding much) I noticed these entries Under DDS.text log Running Processes:

c:\Program Files\Common Files\LightScribe\LSSrvc.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Motive\McciCMService.exe

C:\Program Files\Spyware Doctor\pctsAuxs.exe

Under Attach.txt log Installed Programs:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Are these programs I would find through the Control Panel?
Should I try to uninstall them? I don't know anything about these programs.
Are there others I can't recognize in the logs?

Please help me to identify and remove all the anti-malware programs apart from the Symantec, so that I may safely follow your guidance about running ComboFix. I only installed Symantec and know how to disable its real-time protection.

Thank you in advance for your help with this!! Know that you're helping an elderly couple in their 70s in helping me to clear their machine!!

Hi,

But in your warning, written in red, are you saying that some damage has already been caused to their machine?
No harm has been caused (except the one by malware).

Are you able to help with identifying all of the anti-virus, anti-malware programs on their machine?
Following antivirus/-malware programs are installed (along with Symantec):
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware <- won't interfere with ComboFix
Spyware Doctor 7.0

CCleaner is not antivirus/-malware program and won't interfere with ComboFix. Should be enough to uninstall SpywareDoctor and disable Symantec Antivirus before ComboFix run.

Blade81,

Has the malware caused repairable damage or irreversible damage?

Thanks...

When trying to run ComboFix, it does not seem to be behaving as expected (as documented in the guide). The computer also is running extremely slowly!

Is it at all possible to talk with you through SKYPE. It is difficult to write in everything that has happened and is now happening.

Before starting ComboFix, I had her:
Uninstall Spyware Doctor
Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Disable Windows Defender
Disable Symantec Anti-Virus
Disable Windows Firewall
Create a Restore Point

She had a hard time downloading ComboFix. After at least three attempts at downloading and saving the file to the desktop, she could not find the icon. She tried the windows search for it several times, with the option to search everywhere selected and each time it would not find it.

I then emailed ComboFix to Mom and had to have her save it under a different name (pgpg)without any extension. Then I had her apply the .exe extension to name it as pgpg.exe. After closing all visible programs, windows, etc. she started pgpg.exe aka ComboFix.

She got the Vista prompt to continue (allow) the program to run but did not get any security warning or prompt about the digital signature.
She did not see the initial blue box indicating ComboBox is preparing to run, but got a Windows prompt about Windows Explorer asking if she wanted it to close, restart, or continue. I asked her to select close.
After that the screen went white then later repainted.

She did not see any of the windows/ boxes that the ComboFix guide shows, but the computer disk access light was blinking rapidly so I asked her to just leave the computer alone for several minutes.

In the interim she saw the screen saver displayed and after a while the desktop displayed again.

At this point the desktop is showing as it normally would, with the HPAdvisor box on the top, the Bar with the clock, weather etc she's used to seeing on the right, and no program buttons in the taskbar at the bottom. The disk access light is still blinking in front of the computer.

She has not seen the disclaimer of warranty of software box/prompt or any of the later screens expected from ComboFix.

Note: the disk access light has always been really active, from initial boot-up through anything else she's done.

Following the warning in the ComboFix guide we're afraid to have her touch anything, such as to bring up Task Manager to confirm that the pgpg.exe (ComboFix) is running, but we can't be sure that it is.

We're afraid to have her restart the computer or do anything else!

What do you advise?? Is it possible to speak with you through Skype??

Thank you.

Hi,

Is it at all possible to talk with you through SKYPE.
Sorry but I work via forums only.

I don't think it does any harm if system is rebooted.

As a sidenote, this case may need you to have a direct access to the system. It's always difficult for helper to take a "3rd party role".

Hi Blade81,

As a sidenote, this case may need you to have a direct access to the system. It's always difficult for helper to take a "3rd party role".
You're absolutely right! Unfortunately my parents are about 300 miles away and impossible for me to just get over to quickly. :-( I thank you for your patience with this case!!

I don't think it does any harm if system is rebooted.
Is it okay for her to reboot even if ComboFix may be either in the middle of running, or having been launched is in queue to start? I'm afraid that Windows may be behind in refreshing the screen and that's why she's not seeing some of the prompts or activity.

Would it be okay to launch Task Manager and check to see if ComboFix is running?
If so, would it show up under the applications tab or only under the processes tab?
Would it come up as pgpg (the renamed executable launched by Mom) or as ComboFix?

Steps she's taken/ events occurred so far have been:

Uninstalled Spyware Doctor
Uninstalled Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Disabled Windows Defender
Disabled Symantec Anti-Virus
Disabled Windows Firewall
Created a Restore Point
Tried several times to download ComboFix using the bleepingcomputer link in the ComboFix guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix)
Tried to locate ComboFix several times using <StartButton> <Search> when it could not be located on the Desktop
Emailed ComboFix to Mom and had her save it to the desktop as the same name that GMER had been saved as - vimla.exe. Got the prompt file already exists and authorized windows to replace it - this done to confirm Mom was actually saving to the Desktop and not somewhere else by mistake.
Had Mom close Firefox and the Search windows.
Tried to launch vimla.exe (ComboFix) - but it actually launched GMER
Had her exit from GMER
Had her launch Firefox again to access the email again.
Had her save ComboFix this time as pgpg to the Desktop.
Rename pgpg to pgpg.exe
Closed Firefox
Launched pgpg.exe - windows prompted to allow program - clicked <Continue>.
Saw a window briefly pop up showing download completed.
Watched for and did NOT see the initial blue box indicating ComboBox is preparing to run nor the Disclaimer of Warranty on Software box shown in the ComboFix guide.
Got a Windows prompt about Windows Explorer asking if she wanted it to Close, Restart, or Continue. I asked her to select Close.
After that the screen went white then later repainted.
Screen saver displayed
Desktop visible again
Periodically saw the Vista spinning wait symbol on the Desktop
Confirmed something was working by checking the disk access light on the front of the computer - it had always been blinking.
Waited a while for more activity but only saw the spinning wait symbol come up and go away periodically.
Told Mom to go to bed (it was midnight and we'd been working for 4 hours straight) and see in the morning what is on the screen.

I will post whatever we can see or figure out at this point. I will have her look for:

Any open ComboFix prompt or window
Any ComboFix log

If she only sees the desktop with no open windows, and the disk access light is blinking what should she do?
- launch Task Manager to see if ComboFix is running?
- try to do a Restart of the computer and then try to run ComboFix?
- do a hard stop of the computer (by pressing and holding the power key) and then start it up again and run ComboFix?

In other words, what is the best way to assess what state the computer is in - running slow and still running something, not doing anything, whether ComboFix has run, not run, etc. and the next steps to take?

Thank you as always for your time and assistance!!

citywomanpg

My MAJOR concern is about shutting down/ restarting the computer while ComboFix is actually still running but not apparent from the screen i.e. if Windows hasn't refreshed the display even though ComboFix is running!

citywomanpg
2010-03-25, 14:11
Update from Mom:

The display is showing the desktop with no open windows.
The HP Advisor window normally appears on the top center of the desktop. This window is greyed out and across it is the message "HP Advisor is not responding" She said this has been there since last night.
There is now a button in the bottom taskbar for the HP Advisor - this was NOT there last night when she went to bed. There is no other button in the taskbar. The far right of the taskbar is still showing the resident program icons it normally shows.
When she moves the mouse over anything in the bottom bar of the display - on the Start button, the quick lauch bar, the task bar - the Vista spinning wait circle appears. When she moves the mouse over any other area on the desktop, the arrow / selector symbol appears.
The normal sound speaker volume control icon in the task bar has a red bar across it now, when it normally doesn't
The screen periodically goes black but it seems to be the screen saver because if she moves the mouse the desktop reappears.
If she moves the mouse over the <Start> button the wait spinning circle appears; when she moves it back over an open part of the desktop it appears as an arrow.
Both the computer light and the dsl modem lights are flickering constantly.
There is nothing on the desktop labeled ComboFix; only related item is the ComboFix executable that had been saved as pgpg.exe
It's been about 9 hours since she'd launched ComboFix.
Did we make a mistake by not closing the HP Advisor and the Widgets bar on the right which normally shows things like a weather widget, a pictures widget, etc.? These items are always automatically started by Windows at startup. Could they be causing problems with ComboFix running?
A Microsoft Windows prompt window has opened up now indicating that HP Advisor is not responding and asking to either Continue or Wait.
I have asked Mom not to touch anything, not to respond to this new HP Advisor related prompt and not to even move the mouse!

What should she do about the Microsoft prompt window for the HP Advisor, and getting ComboFix running in general?

Wait longer?
Check what's running through Task Manager? Specifically also check to see if ComboFix is running?
Restart the system?
If Restart - she may have to do a hard shutdown by pressing and holding the power button since Windows is showing a spinning wait circle when she moves the mouse over the Start button.

citywomanpg
2010-03-25, 14:31
Update:
The microsoft prompt window, indicating that the HP Advisor is not respoding and asking if we want to end or wait keeps being displayed and disappearing. When displayed it varies between being a blank white box, a blank blue box with a darker blue label bar, or a box with a blue label bar and a lighter display area with the prompt text showing.

citywomanpg
2010-03-25, 14:52
Update:
The red bar going across the sound icon in the resident programs taskbar has gone away.
Moving the mouse over the Start button or the icons in the taskbar is once again showing an arrow, instead of the spinning wait circle.
But, no ComboFix window is showing still!

Hi,

System restart at this point shouldn't kill anything.

I think it might probably be the best to take the system to shop and let technician there repair the system. Alternatively I recommend to backup important files (pictures, documents, music) and do a reformat.

If you want me to continue on case then it would need you to borrow the system from your mom and keep it until we have finished. That is only working solution we can try via forum.

Hi Blade81,

System restart at this point shouldn't kill anything.

If you want me to continue on case then it would need you to borrow the system from your mom and keep it until we have finished. That is only working solution we can try via forum.

I understand your concern about the third party support we've you've helping with. Would you be willing to wait and see what the symptoms are once we restart the computer? I am also checking to see if a friend who is very computer literate is able to go to my parents and work with you directly through this thread.

Once we restart, would it be okay to re-enable Symantec's anti-virus and run its scan rather than trying to run ComboFix?

Alternatively I recommend to backup important files (pictures, documents, music) and do a reformat.

Do you think a reformat is really necessary? There are several programs installed on that machine that we cannot reinstall properly. These are tax preparation programs my parents have used and the company no longer makes the updates available. The typical install involved downloading and applying updates after installing a shell from the purchased CD. They really need these to maintain the records that the authorities require them to maintain!

I think it might probably be the best to take the system to shop and let technician there repair the system.
This would be quite difficult for them; my Dad really cannot carry the computer and walk because of issues with his right leg and knee!

If you could just get us to where we can be sure the virus is not there, and the system is somewhat stable then I can do the rest of the cleanup. They really need it to be working quickly so they can do their current taxes!!
I can follow up with the rest of the clean up when I go to visit them later in April!!

Please, please help us a little longer!! Perhaps there are some less dangerous or sensitive scans we can run than ComboFix to get them to a safe environment to just get some important personal legal filing work completed!!

Hi Blade81,

I've spoken to a friend who will go to my parents and follow whatever next steps you provide. He is very computer literate and will post back directly into this thread without any third person's involvement. I hope you will continue supporting us!!

Here is the status after restarting the computer:

There are no longer any pop-ups happening.
Since the first set of scans you'd had us run (exeHelper, DDS) she has been able to run .exe and uninstall programs.
For the time being Windows Firewall has been enabled.
Symantec Corporate anti-virus client has been enabled.
Virus definitions for the anti-virus have been updated.
She can get on the internet using both IE and Firefox under the Admin and the Guest id's. However, the Personal ID she was using when the virus attack happened is still not letting her get online using IE, but is letting her get online using Firefox.

I have not let her try out any sensitive programs for fear that it could highlight files that need to be protected.

My friend will run through any next steps you tell us for cleaning out any remaining hidden malware. Please provide the next steps we have to perform to make sure the computer has been cleaned and is safe.

Thank you VERY much for your continued help!!

Hi,

Ok, we'll try to get the case further :). Next I would need to see fresh DDS logs and ComboFix.txt contents if the file got generated. If it didn't then ComboFix should be run again making sure Symantec Antivirus (and other protection software if on board) is disabled before that. These should be run under the account with remaining issues.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! :yahoo:

These should be run under the account with remaining issues.
There are 2 administrative IDs on the machine: Gupta and Admin and they both may have problems.

Gupta is the more important one which my parents have always used and contains the important files. This is the ID Mom was logged in when the computer got infected. However, all of the work done so far with you had to be done under Admin because after the virus attack Mom could not get online under Gupta. As of today, she IS able to get online under Gupta so could we do Gupta first and then look at doing Admin later on?

Next I would need to see fresh DDS logs and ComboFix.txt contents if the file got generated. If it didn't then ComboFix should be run again making sure Symantec Antivirus (and other protection software if on board) is disabled before that.

I want my friend to run the ComboFix for reasons well known to you. He cannot go until tomorrow so that log will be posted later. In the meantime I'm posting the logs from DDS. I will do all activity under Gupta now since that is the more important ID. It has administrative rights also.

Note under Gupta the IE browser is not finding the internet connection while Firefox is. Also, the sound is not working.

Please let me know if there is anything else to be done before the ComboFix is run. If you don't post anything else we will know that you're waiting for the ComboFix log.

Thank you as always for your help.

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

µTorrent

I'd like you to read this thread (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=282).

Please go to Control Panel > Programs and Features and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

P2P programs won't make system safer.

As of today, she IS able to get online under Gupta so could we do Gupta first and then look at doing Admin later on?
We can deal the cleaning via "Gupta" account. That should take care of the other account too. What it comes to that IE issue it should be checked that proxy is disabled:
1. Start IE.
2. Click Tools->Internet Options and go to connections tab there.
3. Click Lan settings and uncheck proxy server related checkbox.
4. Click ok to close lan settings and internet options windows.

I shall wait for that ComboFix log next.

Hi Blade81,

uTorrent has been uninstalled.
Internet access is once again available through IE; however interesting item was that shortly after it was enabled, Symantec' s anti-virus gave a message about a trojan on the computer.

Here's the ComboFix log:

Hi again,

however interesting item was that shortly after it was enabled, Symantec' s anti-virus gave a message about a trojan on the computer.
Did it show what the bad item was?

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Folder::
c:\users\gupta\AppData\Local\nuqiod
c:\users\gupta\AppData\Local\etavah
DDS::

Hi Blade81,

This is a lot of stuff and I'm not sure that I can get my friend to go back and spend this much time working on my parents' machine (he's got a very busy life).

Is the immediate attack(er) cleared from their machine completely? Are these steps preventative only and if so, is it possible to reduce some of them for now and still have a stable, clean environment on their machine for the next month or so?

Could you possibly indicate the minimum steps that must be performed, and the ones I can leave out for now, if possible?

Thank you again for your continued support and guidance!

Hi,

It would be important to carry out all those steps stated. Reasons for that are:
1) bad items have to be removed,
2) vulnerable software has to be replaced with non-vulnerable or system may get infected later again and
3) we have to make sure there're no threats remaining that are not visible in earlier provided logs.

ok; I'll look at getting all of these steps done.

One question, we've been re-enabling Windows Firewall and Symantec Anti-Virus after performing each step you've told us to do. So, after running ComboFix and posting the log, the firewall and anti-virus were both re-enabled.

Should we do so again after completing the most recent set of steps you've given, or leave them off until you tell us to?

Blade81

You may re-enable firewall and antivirus after taking those steps.

Hi,

These files can be deleted:
C:\ProgramData\Symantec\Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5\Quarantine\0B440000.VBN
C:\Users\All Users\Symantec\Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5\Quarantine\0B440000.VBN

Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

A To disable the System Restore feature:

1. Click on the Start button.
2. Hover over the Computer option, right click on it and then click Properties.
3. On the left hand side, click Advanced Settings.
4. If asked to permit the action, click on Allow.
5. Click on the System Protection tab.
6. Uncheck any checkboxes listed for your hard drives.
7. Press OK.

B. Reboot.

C Turn ON System Restore.
Follow the steps like you did when disabling system restore but on step 6. check any checkboxes listed for your hard drives.

We need to re hide system files. To do so, please follow the steps below:
Double-click My Computer. Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options. Click the View tab.
Put a check by
Hide file extensions for known file types.
Under the
Hidden files
folder, select
Show hidden files and folders.
Check
Hide protected operating system files.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

Click START then RUN
Now copy-paste Combofix /uninstall in the runbox and click OK

Please download OTC (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTC.exe) and save it to desktop.

Double-click OTC.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the
Begin cleanup Process?
prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok

Run Secunia vulnerability check here (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/) and fix its findings.

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade

Hi Blade81,

I will apply the steps you've indicated. One problem that seems to have popped up after completing the last set of steps you'd indicated (the ones for which I already posted the logs).

We hadn't enabled the Symantec anti-virus only the firewall because of the time difference and overlap in our activity and your post.

Now when we're trying to enable the realtime protection, it seems to be having a hard time - the spinning circle wait symbol is showing over Symantec anti-virus icon in the systray.

Does this mean that program has been corrupted? Do I need to uninstall that? My Mom does not have the install disk for it, I do; what anti-virus can / should she install in its place?

Hi,

If reboot doesn't help then reinstallation or switch to other solution is needed.

Good free antivirus programs are:
Antivir (http://free-av.com/en/download/1/download_avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html) and
Avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html)

Good commercial ones are from:
Kaspersky (http://www.kaspersky.com/homeuser) and
ESET (http://www.eset.com/products/index.php)

Hi Blade81,

I've completed everything except for upgrading IE - will do that later today. My friend had checked critical windows updates and the only one that had come up was for IE 8. It couldn't be done yesterday because of time limits.

Everything seems okay on the computer - there are no unwanted pop-ups and we can execute all programs. The difference/ problem we are noticing is that the computer has become REALLY slow. Every program is taking a really long time to launch and to display its window.

Is that a result of one of the utilities you've had us run? Is there anything we can do to restore its speed to where it had been before the virus?

Thank you.

Hi,

Did that issue appear after some specific step? What antivirus program there is running now?

citywomanpg
2010-03-30, 06:00
I don't think we can say any exact step but generally, it seemed to get much slower after doing the steps in post #27.

The anti-virus program is Symantec's Antivirus Corporate Edition Client 10.1

Blade81
2010-03-30, 14:23
Hi,

Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition is, as its name says, for corporate use. I don't think your parents have license rights for that. That means you have to replace the protection software with other solution (i.e. one of those I recommended).

citywomanpg
2010-03-30, 18:56
Actually, this is a licensed copy of the corporate client for home use. It was given to me by a company I'd worked for (a large corporation) to install on my home computer. They give out a client version to employees who sometimes have to work from home, to install on home computers so that the employees can't cause a virus to infect the corporate LAN when they login from home.

I will take your advice though and look at installing Antivir or Avast instead. Updating the Symantec Corporate Client has been a challenge since LiveUpdate doesn't work under Vista. That might have exposed them this time since their virus definitions were out of date by a couple of months!

:thanks: Thank you for all your help, patience and time throughout this process. It is truly appreciated!!

I hope to not bother you further!!

Yes, but license most likely covers employees home only and it's a corporate version with all that entails. Your parents would probally find an AV made for personal use more managable with less conflicts.

Ok, will definitely install Antivir.

Do you recommend I install spybot on their machine as well (can do so when I go visit them)? I didn't do it originally because a Vista version was not available. I see that now there is.

Blade81

Yes, it would be a good idea to install Spybot too :)
