Hello and welcome to Safer Networking.

My name is km2357 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

If for any reason you do not understand an instruction or are just unsure then please do not guess, simply post back with your questions/concerns and we will go through it again.

Please do not start another thread or topic, I will assist you at this thread until we solve your problems.

Lastly the fix may take several attempts and my replies may take some time but I will stick with it if you do the same.

I will be back as soon as possible with your first instructions!

Step # 1: Remove Hijackthis Entries

Run HijackThis
Click on the Scan button
Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE

Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
Click on the "Fix Checked" button
When completed, close the application.

Step # 2 Download and run DDS

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr) or here (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds).
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
DDS.txt
Attach.txt

Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

Step # 3: Download and Run Gmer

Please download gmer.zip (http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip) from Gmer and save it to your desktop.

***Please close any open programs ***

Double-click gmer.exe. The program will begin to run.

**Caution**
These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOTKIT" entries unless advised by a trained Security Analyst

If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan. Click No.

Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity.
Click OK.

GMER will produce a log. Click on the Save button, and save the log as gmer.txt somewhere you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
If you do not receive notice about possible rootkit activity remain on the Rootkit/Malware tab & make sure the 'Show All' button is unticked. Click the Scan button and let the program do its work. GMER will produce a log.
Click on the Save button, and save the log as gmer.txt somewhere you can easily find it, such as your desktop.

DO NOT touch the PC at ALL for Whatever reason/s until it has 100% completed its scan, or attempted scan in case of some error etc !

Please post the results from the GMER scan in your reply.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. The two DDS Logs (DDS and Attach.txt)
2. The GMER Log

Use multiple posts if you can't fit everything into one post/reply.

Hi

there is no GMer log at the moment. It just took over 6 hours to run, 30 minutes waiting for it to save, then I noticed the clock in the tray had stopped 20 minutes earlier and the whole thing was completely frozen up

Can I just check before I run it again later.....

If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan.
Click No.

does an actual notice/dialog box come up? (I really am a novice, so please forgive me for asking the obvious)

I had no dialog box or could see anything asking questions.

thank you again for

helping me with this issue and for

being the wings for the notebook before I throw it out of the window

and helping my daughter to do her homework again

thanks

do I just past the attach file or do I zip and attach it?

Copying and Pasting the Attach.txt log was just fine. :) No need to attach any logs unless I ask you to attach them.

The dialog box in question only comes up if rootkit activity is found by GMER during its scan. If no rootkits (or their activity) are found then no dialog box. :) Go ahead and try running GMER one more time, if it freezes up on you again and you're unable to get a log from it, let me know and I'll have you run another rookit scanner.

Hi

I am having no luck with GMER

There were no dialog boxes opening up in the beginning.

The first time (today) I tried a scan it caused a restart and a 'recovered from a fatal error' dialog box when the notebook started back up again

The second time the scan got almost to the end and then caused a restart/disappeared (unfortuntaely I was out of the room when this happened )

I have just tried to run it again and it has caused another restart with a 'recovered from fatal error' box.

i have shut down as much as I can find - including disconnect from internet, before running these scans.

next step please

Since you didn't get any farther with GMER, let's try this next:

Step # 1 Download and run SysProt

Download SysProt Antirootkit from the link below (you will find it at the bottom of the page under attachments, or you can get it from one of the mirrors).

http://sites.google.com/site/sysprotantirootkit/

Unzip it into a folder on your desktop.

Double click Sysprot.exe to start the program.

Click on the Log tab.
In the Write to log box select the following items only:
Process
Kernel Modes
SSDT
Kernel Hooks
Hidden Files
Click on the Create Log button on the bottom right.
After a few seconds a new window should appear.
Select Scan Root Drive. Click on the Start button.
When it is complete a new window will appear to indicate that the scan is finished.
The log will be saved automatically in the same folder Sysprot.exe was extracted to. Open the text file and copy/paste the log here.

Step # 1 Update Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u18 (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp).
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Remove the following old versions of Java:

Java(TM) 6 Update 14

Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.

Is all this showing infections or just too many things running at the same time/not enough memory etc? CPU usage has dropped - with just this post and the taskmanager open (open as in I am aware of!) its averaging around 25% peaking at 85%ish. Last week it was constantly running at >95% on anything other than the desktop screen!

I really appreaciate all your help.
thank you

Is all this showing infections or just too many things running at the same time/not enough memory etc? CPU usage has dropped - with just this post and the taskmanager open (open as in I am aware of!) its averaging around 25% peaking at 85%ish. Last week it was constantly running at >95% on anything other than the desktop screen!

Looking over your logs, I'm not really seeing any signs of an infection(s) that could be causing the slowdown. Also, one thing that could have been slowing the computer down was that it had too much junk on it (temp files and other junk). And running ATF Cleaner cleaned all that up. Have you ever cleaned out the computer's temp files before coming here? Also, when was the last time you defragged the computer's Hard Drive?

It is also possible it could be related to not enough memory on the computer. How much RAM does it have?

I'd still like you to do one more scan for me to see if there is any malware/spyware/infections we may have missed.

Step # 1 Update Adobe Acrobat Reader

There is a newer version of Adobe Acrobat Reader available. (See Note below)

First, go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall Adobe Reader 8.1.2.
Please go to this link Adobe Acrobat Reader Download Link (http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html)
On the right Untick Adobe Phototshop Album Starter Edition if you do not wish to include this in the installation.
Click the Continue button
Click Run, and click Run again
Next click the Install Now button and follow the on screen prompts

Note: Adobe 9.3.1 is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 3.2.0 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/downloads/index.php

If you decide to install Foxit 3.2.0 instead of Adobe, do the following during Foxit's Setup/Installation process:

Uncheck the following boxes:

I accept the License Terms and want to install Foxit Toolbar

Make Ask.com my default search

Create desktop, quick launch and start menu icon to eBay

Step # 2: Run Kaspersky Online Scan

Please go to Kaspersky website (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) and perform an online antivirus scan.

Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button: Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Mail databases Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Please post this log in your next reply.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. Kaspersky Log
2. A fresh DDS Log
3. How is your computer doing, any problems?

HI

the ATf cleaner only managed to get rid of 56 kb - not much at all. Before posting I cleaned up nearly a GB of 'junk' using IE and the macafffe cleaner. I also used the windows disc cleaner - I got out as much as I could. I defragged before I got here, too. Clean up, defrag, get rid of as much as I can - were all the first things I did.

Memory. I have a dozy head on this - in that I have forgotten where to look for it. shame. All I remember is that it has a lot more memory in it than the one I am using now. Up until a few weeks ago the little notebook was lightening fast and then it crawled practically to a stop. We hadn't added anything new to it!!

I will get on to the rest of the tasks next.

(I do post all the logs etc from my daughters laptop!!)

thanks again

Time now to switch on the other one and get to the tasks.

Don't worry about it. It didn't come off as harsh to me. :)

To see how much RAM you have on the computer, do the following:

Click Start, then Control Panel, then finally double-click on System. The amount of RAM the computer has will be listed on the screen near the bottom of the System window.

Time now to switch on the other one and get to the tasks.

Hi

adobe updated

kaspersky - 8 hours later no log given, no report, only the word null. muha:

Interesting that while it was running the scan time was not keeping up with the real time elasped. Scan was about 5 hours behind - until the end when it did catch up.

1 G RAM. Is this enough? What can I shut off?

new DDS reports to follow - plus report on how the computer is doing, now that the scan has finished.

thanks for all your help

Nothing malicious jumps out at me from the DDS Logs.

adobe updated

I see from your DDS Log that you have Adobe Reader 9.3 installed. The latest version is 9.3.1. Open up Adobe Reader and click Help, then click Check for Updates. Once Adobe is done checking, have it download and install the update for Adobe Reader 9.3.1, if its there.

kaspersky - 8 hours later no log given, no report, only the word null.

Interesting that while it was running the scan time was not keeping up with the real time elasped. Scan was about 5 hours behind - until the end when it did catch up.

Don't know why it didn't even give you a report. I'll give the instructions for another online scanner in this post. We'll see if we can get a log from that one. This scanner should take less time than Kaspersky does/did.

1 G RAM. Is this enough? What can I shut off?

1 Gig of RAM is good for Windows XP. I did notice a few things we can stop from starting up in the DDS Log. I would like to get a HiJackThis Log from you, this will make it easier to stop what we can stop.

First, the online scanner:

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
ESET OnlineScan (http://eset.com/onlinescan) Click the http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetOnline.png button. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps) Click on http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetExport.png to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop. Double click on the http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetSmartInstallDesktopIcon.png icon on your desktop. Check http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetAcceptTerms.png Click the http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetStart.png button. Accept any security warnings from your browser. Check http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetScanArchives.png Push the Start button. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time. When the scan completes, push http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetListThreats.png
Make sure that Remove found threats is unchecked
Push http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetExport.png, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply. Push the http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetBack.png button. Push http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetFinish.png

Step # 1: Download and Run HijackThis

Download HJTInstall.exe (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/_download/HJTInstall.exe) to your Desktop.

Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.

Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Post the ESET and HiJackThis Logs in your next post/reply.

Hi

After over 4 hours eset was still only 40% completed. Unfotunately, I had to stop it due to lack of time I won't be able to give the time for this until Monday.

In the meantime, here is an interim HJT log - in case there is anything I can shut off to run the scan faster. I will do anotherone after the virus scan.

Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

Both your ESET and HiJackThis Logs look good. :)

I did notice that when starting task manager there are 6 synchost.exe running

Do you mean svchost.exe? That's normal to have that many svchost.exe's running in Task Manager.

6 iexplorer.exe runing

Do you mean iexplorer.exe or iexplore.exe? If its iexplorer.exe, then we need to take care of it ( http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/iexplorer/ ). If its iexplore.exe, then that's Internet Explorer, and its normal to have multiple instances of iexplore.exe running when you have Internet Explorer 8.

Earlier in the thread you mentioned having Task Manager open and running at 25% (with a peak of 85%). How is the computer doing now?

Sorry - small screen, wrong specs and panic mode!!

Is there a list of what all those things ie processess in task manager are? It would be interesting and out of curiostity.

anyway, back to topic...

The pc is still peaking at 100% but is dropping back much much faster now. It only goes there when I open a new window or so something else - which is what I would expect.

with just this and the task manager open its running at 3% and regularly fluctuating to 50% and dropping back very quickly. the trace actually looks like it is breathing!!! It has very much improved - thank you.

things are still very difficult when the virus scanner kicks in or updates, I think I shall need to change that one. Any recommendations for one which works more efficiently but still provides the protection?

I am very impressed at how much you have improved the computer and I am extremely grateful.

Bonus: my daughter has no excuse not to do her homework, now!!

thank you

A good site to use to find out what the processess are in the Task Manager is Process Library. The link for it is below:

http://www.processlibrary.com/

Make sure you read the results of your search on the website carefully, you don't want to end up stopping any good process/process you need.

What you're describing is normal and its good to hear that the computer is very much improved. :)

There are a couple free Anti-Viruses you can replace McAfee with.

Here are a couple of choices:

1)Antivir PersonalEdition Classic (http://www.free-av.com/)
2)avast! Home Edition (http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download)

Download and install only one!

Once you've picked one and downloaded it setup/install file, disconnect from the Internet and uninstall McAfee. Then reboot your computer. Once your computer boots back up, install the new Anti-Virus then get back online and update the new AV.

Since there doesn't appear to be any more problems, you are good to go. :)

You can delete the following off of the computer:

DDS.scr
The two DDS Logs
GMER.zip
GMER.exe
SysProt.zip
SysProt.exe
The SysProt Log

Empty the Recycle Bin.

Please take the time to read my All Clean Post.

Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
Make sure the C:\ drive is selected and click OK. If your computer's Hard Drive is not located on C:, change it to the correct drive letter then click OK.
Select the More options tab
Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created..

Clearing your restore points is not something you should do on a regular basis. Normally, this process only needs to be done after clearing out an infestation of malware.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure This can be done by following these simple instructions: From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub frames across different domains to Prompt When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it asks you if you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Set correct settings for files that should be hidden in Windows XP
Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
Under "Hidden files and folders" if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
If unchecked please checkHide protected operating system files (Recommended)
If necessary check "Display content of system folders"
If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
Click OK

Use An Antivirus Software and Keep It Updated - It is very important that your computer has an antivirus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a day. If you do not update your antivirus software, then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently It is important that you visit Microsoft Updates (http://update.microsoft.com/) regularly. This will ensure your computer has the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Install SpywareBlaster SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. An article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line Anti Malware (http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?p=54#54)
Use the hosts file: Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate web pages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain web pages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional. Download mvps hosts file (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial HERE (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html) If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button on the task bar at the bottom of your screen Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then doubleclick it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok..
Use an alternative instant messenger program.Trillian (http://www.trillian.cc/) and Miranda IM (http://www.miranda-im.com/) These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
Please read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place (http://forums.subratam.org/index.php?showtopic=5931)
Please read Understanding Spyware, Browser Hijackers, and Dialers (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial41.html)
Please read Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial82.html)
If you are using Internet Explorer, please consider using an alternate browser: Mozilla's Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox) or
Opera (http://www.opera.com/download/).
If you decide to use either FireFox or Opera, it is very important that you keep them up to date and check frequently for updates of the browser of your choice.
Update all these programs regularly Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
If your computer was infected by a website, a program, IM, MSN, or p2p, check this site because it is Time To Fight Back (http://spyware-free.us/2006/01/time-to-fight-back.html). Follow these steps and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
