Computer running seriously slow, disappearing sys tray icon

I'm running a Dell Inspiron 1150 with Windows XP Service Pack 3, 2.60GHz CPU and 1MB RAM. The machine is just running interminably slow currently. Also, there is an icon that disappears and reappears randomly in my sys tray (it's the volume icon, the one that looks like a speaker). I don't have any strong evidence, it just feels like there is something wrong and that I'm possibly infected.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

O23 - Service: Viewpoint Manager Service - Viewpoint Corporation - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe



Go to your Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall Viewpoint, it installs without your knowledge or consent, is considered Adware, uses system resources and is not needed for anything.



The rest of your log looks fine but Hijackthis has become a bit outdated, it may not be showing everything.

Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.

DDS.pif (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds)

Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
Notepad will open with the results, click no to the Optional_Scan
Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.

Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

No worries on the delay. I know how busy you all are kept in these forums and I just so appreciate everything you do to help us out here.

I did as you said with the HJT and deleted that using the Fix Problem, also removing it in the Add/Remove Programs.

Ran the DDS, copied the log file and deleted it from my desktop. The Log is posted below.

Something else I want to mention. I have only had good experiences with avast! and have been using it for years. Frankly, I love everything about its AV protections. However, when I upgraded the program not long ago (not sure when the new one came out, a couple months back?) that is when I started to notice the slow down in my computer. Since then it just seems to get exponentially worse. When the computer boots up it takes forever (we're talking longer than 15 minutes) for avast! to finish loading and the icon in the sys tray to get rid of its yield sign and start spinning. This slow down also effects my other sys tray start ups, keeping them from loading until avast! is finished. The version I've got running is v5.0.462.

I don't know if this has anything to do with anything, but felt it was something worth mentioning.

Nothing bad on DDS either. Why don't you try uninstalling Avast, reboot and see if it makes a difference.

If you have problems uninstalling it you can use there free removal tool
http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility


Let me know if it made a difference, if it did than thats the culprit. You can post here in there forum, they may be aware and have a patch to fix it

I went to the avast! forums and they suggested as you that I install from scratch after removing with their removal tool in Safe Mode.

I've just done that, also went into preferences and set it so avast! would load after other services. So far things seem to be better. The boot up time appears only slightly slower than before I installed v5.0.462 the first time and before I began to have slow down problems.

There were others in their forum who seemed to be having similar problems, even the problem I'd been having with my computer shutting down due to temperature. Apparently, some were experiencing this because some of this new avast! was using a great deal of CPU power thus causing the temperature to run high. I, too, was having this problem and hopefully that will be fixed as well.

As I said, I have just done this and right now things seem to be running faster and much better. I will keep my fingers crossed that this continues. If not, I'm sure you'll see me back here.

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard, they will conflict with the TeaTimer in Spybot , you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer .


Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.

Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.

Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.

IE-Spyad (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23332-order,1-page,1-c,antispywaretools/description.html)
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

Firefox 3 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
