View Full Version : Spybot showed I had Virtumonde and I've been getting Trojan horses.

A few nights ago my AntiVirus (AVG Free) popped up indicating that threats had been found. A scan showed that I had several Trojan horses. I moved them to the vault. I again received a message from AVG saying that threats had been detected. The same Trojan horses were listed again. I tried using my Malwarebyte's but it wouldn't let me. I then ran a Spybot scan and it showed the Virtumonde in the results. I hit fix problems. I have continued to have problems.

I have tried re-installing Malwarebyte's by renaming the file like was suggested in an article I found. It will completely install and then I receive an error message when it tries to open.

I keep getting Window Script Host messages that say "Loading your settings failed. (Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service.)" I did turn off restore point while trying to follow the suggestions of an article I came across. I turned it back on after reading the instructions from the sticky note in this forum.

A scan with AVG today showed that there were some different Trojan horses. A new scan with Spybot today did not bring up Virtumonde, but in the bar at the bottom of the window it showed it was scanning "Virtumonde.sci"

I have made a backup of the registry with ERUNT as instructed.

Hi and welcome to SNF, sorry for the delay the forum is really busy.
My name is Cypher, and I will be helping you with your malware problems.

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.
Read Back up your files (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Back-up-your-files)

please note the following important guidelines.

The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only!.
Using these instructions on a different computer, can damage that computer and possibly make it inoperable!
If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
Only post your problem at One help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
Only reply to this thread do not start another, Please continue responding until I give you the "All Clean"
Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.
Please DO NOT install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process. This adds more items to be researched.
Print each set of instructions... if possible...your Internet connection might not be available during some fix processes.
Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
The logs from the tools we use can take some time to research so please be patient.

If you haven't done so already, please read this topic READ this Procedure BEFORE Requesting Assistance (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288) where the conditions for receiving help here are explained.

Please post an Uninstall list.

Open HijackThis.
Click on the Open the Misc Tools section button.
Look under System tools.
Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
Click on the Save list... button.
It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply.

Hi snsteve.
Don't turn of system restore again please leave it on.
Ok lets see if we can get Malwarebytes to run.
If it still won't run just continue on with the rest of the instructions for running RSIT.

Disable Ad-Aware Service

This will work for either version 2007 or 2008

Go to Start, Run OR Start, Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt and type services.msc and click OK.
Under the Extended Tab, find one of these services, depending on which version you have:
Ad-Aware 2007 Service or Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service
Click once on the service to highlight it.
Right-Click on the service. Click on Properties
Select the General tab.
Next to Service Status, click Stop.
Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side of the Start-up Type box.
From the drop-down menu, click on Disabled
Click Apply , then OK
Note: Don't re-enable until i tell you to do so.

Next.

Uninstall programs
Click on Start.
All programs.
Accessories.
Run.
In the open text box copy/paste appwiz.cpl Then click Ok.
Uninstall the following

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Now reboot your PC.

Next.

Download and run This utility (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-clean.exe)
it will ask to restart your computer (please allow it to)

Next.

Scan with exeHelper:

Please download exeHelper (http://www.raktor.net/exeHelper/exeHelper.com) and save it to your desktop.

Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
Post the contents of exehelperlog.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com, and should open at the end of the scan)
Please post the contents of the log.txt file in your next reply.
Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

Next.

Download/run Rkill:

Please download Rkill from one of the following links and save to your Desktop:

One (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.exe), Two (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.com),Three (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.scr) or Four (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.pif)

Double click on Rkill.
A command window will open then disappear upon completion, this is normal.
When finished, Notepad will open with a log called, "rkill.log".
Please copy and paste the contents of the rkill.log in your next reply.
The file is automatically saved... located at C:\rkill.log.
Please leave Rkill on the Desktop until otherwise advised.

Note: If your security software warns about Rkill, please ignore and allow the download to continue.

Next.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) and save to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... and click Remove Selected.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log back into your next reply
The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Hi Cypher,

I tried Malwarebytes' once again with no luck. I then disabled the Lava Ad-Aware Service as you instructed. When I did the Unistall part, Malwarebytes' didn't show up in the list, but I went directly to the file in my Programs folder and uninstalled it. I then rebooted.

I then downloaded and tried to run the utility you linked to, but was unsuccessful. It would download, but when I would go to run it it would pop up and say "This utility will remove all components of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from your system. Are you sure you want to continue?" When I clicked yes, it would then pop up and say, "SHGetValue failed with error code 0" Then it wouldn't do anything.

Should I continue on with the rest of your instructions?

Hi snsteve.
Don't worry about Malwarebytes for now please continue with the instructions below.

Please download GMER Rootkit Scanner from Here (http://www.gmer.net/download.php).
Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii277/sUBs_/th_Gmer_initScan.gif (http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii277/sUBs_/Gmer_initScan.gif)
Click the image to enlarge it

In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ... Sections
IAT/EAT
Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
Show All (don't miss this one)
Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your next reply**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries
Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.
